Basketball Africa League, Fremantle and Passenger Team Up For Historic Documentary Series

The Basketball Africa League (BAL), the production and distribution house Fremantle , the award-winning producer of TRUE DETECTIVE Richard Brown and sports marketing company Infront have teamed up to produce an original documentary series tracing the history of the founding and inaugural season of BAL, a new professional league of 12 African clubs which will kick off on Sunday, May 16 in Kigali, Rwanda. The series will be directed by South African director Tebogo Malope.

The BAL is the result of a partnership between the National Basketball Association (NBA) ( and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and marks the first NBA collaboration to manage a league outside North America. North. The first BAL finals will take place on Sunday May 30.

This historic documentary series tells the story of African players, coaches and teams and their preparations to participate in the first season of BAL. Each episode will highlight the passion and ambition behind this Pan-African basketball league and the people who have worked tirelessly to change the sporting landscape of the African continent through this historic initiative. Filming for the series has started in several countries.

The series was designed by Tebogo Malope in collaboration with executive producer Richard Brown, award-winning director Fisher Stevens (THE TIGER KING, PALMER, THE ANSE), and acclaimed Nigerian director / producer Akin Omotoso, who is currently filming THE GREEK FREAK for Disney + a feature film on the life of Giannis Antetokounmpo (born in Greece to Nigerian parents), twice elected NBA MVP.

Anthony Scheinman and Christian Vesper will also be executive producers for Infront and Fremantle, respectively. The partners will work together on global distribution plans. Additional distribution information will be communicated as it becomes available.

Hosted at Fremantle and produced in an exclusive partnership with BAL, the documentary series is part of Fremantle’s exclusive multi-year agreement with Passenger , Richard Brown’s production company.

Tebogo Malope is the South African director who directed QUEEN SONO, Netflix’s first African original series. He is currently completing a feature-length documentary telling the story of Siya Kolisi, the first black captain of the South African national rugby team. Tebogo Malope has also produced numerous award-winning commercials.

Richard Brown was the soul of TRUE DETECTIVE, the world-famous HBO anthology series; he was the executive producer for all three seasons of this multi-award-winning and critically acclaimed series. Richard Brown designed and produced the successful limited series CATCH-22 starring George Clooney, Kyle Chandler, Christopher Abbott and Hugh Laurie, broadcast by Hulu / Sky Italia / Channel 4. He is also known to have produced the drama series KING OUTSIDE THE LAW from Netflix, directed by David Mackenzie, starring Chris Pine in the lead role. He currently produces THIS SCEPTRED ISLAND, the 5-part Fremantle and Sky series, directed by Michael Winterbottom, starring Kenneth Branagh as British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Fisher Stevens, who appears several times in the series SUCCESSION distributed by HBO, recently directed PALM for Apple, starring Justin Timberlake. He was the executive producer of TIGER KING for Netflix, the director of the documentary on Formula E (electric motorsport) titled AND WE GO GREEN for Hulu, and BEFORE THE FLOOD for National Geographic, and producer of the Oscar-winning documentary THE ANSE.

Born in Nigeria, Akin Omotoso is a renowned South Africa-based director who has produced and directed award-winning films such as MAN ON THE GROUND (Official selection of the 2011 Toronto and Berlin International Film Festivals) and VAYA, distributed by Array (Toronto 2017).
