Lagos, Feb. 15, 2019 (NNN) An athletics statistician, Olalekan Soetan, on Friday lauded Divine Oduduru, a 100m athlete and Abike Egbeniyi, an 800m athlete for their excellent performances at the U.S. National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Championships.

Soetan told the News Agency of Nigeria (NNN) in Lagos that Oduduru’s performance was a strong indicator that a sub-10 was feasible at the outdoor season.

“Of all the Nigerian athletes currently competing at NCAA, the two have actually stood out. Divine Oduduru performed better than his Personal Best (PB) over 60m indoor with his 6.56secs effort.

“This performance is a strong indicator of sub-10s, it is very feasible in 100m when outdoor season begins.

“Egbeniyi is another performer with new PB in 500m and 800m indoor. We should be expecting a sub-2 mins from her in 800m outdoor if she doesn’t deliver it in indoor.

“Others are not so spectacular at the moment, especially those who have been featuring at indoor for some seasons now,” he said.

Soetan said though featuring in the NCAA championships was a good avenue to expose athletes, noting that it could also be a two-edged sword.

“It’s a good avenue to expose our young athletes to adequate competitions.

“But too many of such can be counter-productive if they keep featuring in various events often, especially in non-specialist events,” he said.

He said that out of the 23 top most senior athletes on his ranking, 10 didn’t meet their personal best efforts in 2018 season, adding that it was not good.

He added that those that met and bettered their personal best showed good potential of transiting to elite level this season.

Those listed are: Blessing Okagbare’s time of 22.04secs and 10.90secs in the 200m and 100m and Josh Awotunde throw of 21.33m and 20.77m in the shot put.

The women 4×100 team’s time 42.75secs, Divine Oduduru’s time of 20.15secs and 10.10secs in the 200m and 100m, the men 4×100 m time of 38.52secs.

Chukwuebuka Enekwechi’s throw of 21.22m of shot put, Tobi Amusan’s time of 12.68secs and 11.31secs in the 100m hurdle and 100m.

Soetan also listed the women 4×400 m team’s time of 3:25.29secs, Onome Nathaniel’s time of 55.01secs and 52.08secs in the 400m hurdle and 400m.

Ese Brume’s leap of 6.83m in the Long Jump and Yinka Ajayi’s time of 51.22secs and 23.51secs in the 400m and 200m.
