APC postpones state congress in Oyo

The All Progressives Congress, APC‘s Extraordinary Planning and Interim Convention Planning Committee, CECPC, has indefinitely postponed the party convention scheduled for Saturday.

The postponement was announced on Saturday at the Obafemi Awolowo stadium in Ibadan by the congress official.

Party spokesman AbdulAzeez Olatunde said the postponement followed a directive from the national secretariat.

Mr. Olatunde explained that the party would communicate a new date for the congress.

“The convention has been postponed and we need to get another date from the national party executive.

“There are people who are supposed to be screening applicants and they haven’t completed the process.

“And after that, we have to get all areas of agreement and sensitize them on consensus agreements.

“Until this morning, Zone Oke-Ogun 1 has yet to decide who will serve as zone president in the zone,” he said.

In addition, Abu Gbadamosi, a presidential candidate, told reporters that they would respect the party’s position, saying the party’s rules and regulations were supreme.

Mr. Gbadamosi urged party members to be patient and endure for the party to reach its destination in 2023.

Nigeria‘s news agency reports that the party, CECPC, has suspended the congress and ordered the state congress committee to return to Abuja for further directives.

A source at the national secretariat told NAN that the suspension had become necessary to ensure the credibility of the process that would lead to the emergence of new leaders in Oyo state.

NAN also reports that a committee set up to screen aspirants continued the exercise on Saturday.

However, the convention venue was already filled with supporters of various aspiring and aspiring political office holders before the postponement was announced.

NAN reports that there were mixed feelings from party members who had traveled several kilometers to Ibadan, the state capital for the congress.
