We reiterate that the report of the Fire and Rescue Services only contains preliminary observations of the firefighters during the development of their work

CAPE TOWN, South Africa, January 10, 2022 / APO Group / –

Parliament has taken note of a public statement from the National Union of Education, Health and Allied Workers (Nehawu), which organizes the staff of Parliament, which has instructed its members not to appear on the premises of Parliament due to alleged health and safety problems at work. The union’s statement is based on the Fire and Rescue Services fire and safety report released by the city of Cape Town on Friday.

Parliament wishes to inform that, on 2 January 2022, the Parliament’s Accountant sent a communication to the members of the staff, informing them of the restriction of access to the premises of Parliament due to the fire incident, which has resulted in the cordoning off of the affected. buildings for security reasons, investigation by law enforcement and the evaluation of the multidisciplinary team of engineers from the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure.

Due to these restrictions, the physical presence of the majority of staff members, with the exception of the management directly responsible for handling the fire incident, is not expected until further notice.

We reiterate that the report of the Fire and Rescue Services only contains preliminary observations of the firefighters during the development of their work. It does not purport to provide conclusive results and evidence regarding the cause and circumstances surrounding the fire incident, nor does it offer a safety assessment of the other parliamentary buildings that were not affected by the fire.

The Board of Parliament remains committed to the spirit of last week’s debate between the President of the National Assembly and the Union leadership, which includes a number of additional commitments to try to resolve union complaints and work together after the fire incident Public exchanges during this time of crisis remain useless and may negatively affect the ongoing process of implementing the institutional recovery and business continuity plan.
