Chief Tony Oli, Chairman, Anambra State Sports Development Commission has called on the general public to cultivate the habit of regular physical exercise because of its benefits.
Oli made the call during the 13th edition of the the state’s Walk for Life programme, organised by the commission in Awka on Saturday.
He expressed joy that individuals were enthusiastic about the exercise, and attended from Awka and environs.
He said that the large turnout showed that people were taking their health more serious.
Oli said that the walk had resumed after a month break, and urged residents of the state to participate to improve their health.
He urged the residents to engage in daily exercise as it would aid the elderly to live longer and bring out more agility in the youth.
“ We started today’s walk from Amawbia Flyover through the UniZik temporary site and terminated at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka.
“ We did all that to create awareness to the people on the importance of exercise and to encourage the public to ensure they engage in daily physical exercise for longevity.
Mr Emeka Ozumba, Deputy Chief Press Secretary to Anambra Gov. Willie Obiano, was part of the walk.
He advised the people to key into the fitness programme of the administration to avoid premature death.
Ozumba said that it was important to give priority attention to one’s health.
Chief Uche Nworah, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Anambra Broadcasting Service, said that the walk had become part of the people.
He hailed the state government for creating such a platform.
Nworah said that many people had, through the Sports Development Commission, became aware of the importance of physical exercise.
Mrs Ngozi Obileri, a journalist, said that the monthly Walk for Life had afforded her an opportunity to exercise her body.
He praised the commission for the initiative.
