Anambra govt. trains 10,000 teachers to fight cyber crime

Published

Prof. Kate Omenugha, the Commissioner for Basic Education in Anambra, has said that 10,000 teachers were undergoing training on Information Communicate Technology (ICT) to combat Cyber Crime among students.

Omenugha said this in an interview with the Nigeria News Agency in Awka on Friday, while commending the Joint Consultative Committee and National Council on Education for developing a curriculum to regulate Cyber Security in the education sector.

She said that the curriculum was being developed to create awareness on Education ICT on cyber security.

“We need to take the minds of our pupils and students away from cyber crimes and going to sites that teach how to commit suicide and kidnap, among other crimes,” she said.

She said that the training would be for both primary and post-primary school teachers so that they would be well-informed to teach their pupils and students on the right use of ICT.

The commissioner further said that various centres mapped out for the three-week training in Awka Zone of the State Education Commission were functional and would provide the needed learning environment.

She said that Gov. Wille Obiano’s administration was committed to training teachers that would be ICT-compliant to compete favourably with their counterparts across the globe and also impart quality knowledge.

She said that the governor had great passion for teachers and students to be at the same pedestal with their counterparts on ICT know-how.

Omenugha said that Google would also train the teachers on Cyber Security in order to curb the increase in cyber site usage that takes young minds to dangerous aspects of the ICT.

The commissioner said that cyber bullying and its related crimes would soon be a thing of the past for school age children in the state.

She said that government had concluded plans to provide teachers with laptops on loan for continuous learning.

Omenugha described the training as a great initiative that had provided an avenue for the teachers to acquire computer education and training.

She said that the training would enable them to key into modern ways of teaching and learning.

Atiku Support Groups congratulate Obaseki

Published

The All Atiku Support Groups (ASGs), has congratulated Gov. Godwin Obaseki on his re-election as the governor of Edo on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The group Chairman, Mr Fabiyi Oladimeji, in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja said Obaseki’s convincing victory was due to the resilience and steadfastness of the people of Edo State who did not give room for any manipulation by undemocratic forces.

“Nothing can be more dignifying than the stance and resolve of the good people of Edo for what they truly believed in.

“The good people of Edo state have demonstrated dexterity and spoken very loudly against god fatherism, against arrogance in power just as they have voted for progress and prosperity.”

Oladimeji commended the courage of Obaseki, his deputy, the State campaign council under the leadership of Chief Dan Orbih and all leaders of note in Edo State, Oladimeji said.

He also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for maintaining neutrality in the election.

“We understand there cannot be perfection in any electoral process, but INEC by its conduct in the just concluded Edo election has shown that it is possible if we all decided to do what is right.”

Oladimeji said that the group would not take the role played by the security agencies in ensuring the smooth running of the elections for granted.

He said that although there was a full contingent of officers of the Nigerian Police and other security agencies on ground, no recorded cases of intimidation or harassment of voters were recorded during the election.

He also appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari for allowing the good people of Edo to have their say and way.

“Democratic process demands that people should be allowed to freely elect their choices, as democracy is all about the people.”

Oladimeji commended the doggedness of the Chairman, PDP National Campaign Council, Gov. Nyesom Wike, his Colleagues, Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta,  Seyi Makinde of Oyo state and all the National campaign council.

He also commended Atiku Abubakar for his timely intervention and support, as well as the Edo State Chapter of  ASGs for mobilising voters for Obaseki’s re-election.

Oladimeji appealed to all stakeholders in the PDP to embrace the same strategy adopted and apply same during the upcoming Ondo Governorship election, Lagos senatorial by-election and Anambra governorship election.

He commeded Edo people for standing up for democracy through their avowed determination to ensure that the will of the people and nobody else prevailed in their state.

“Edo people by their dogged display on Saturday were determined to take their collective destiny in their own hands and for this, PDP is proud of them,” he stated.

“We are standing on the euphoria of this to urge the President to sign the amended Electoral Act into law and carry out further electoral reforms that will engender peace and less interference in our electoral process.

Flood: Reptiles invade homes in Anambra community

Published

on

Dangerous reptiles have began to creep into some residential houses in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra, as a result of flood.

Mr Arinze Awogu, Transition Chairman of Ogbaru Council Area who disclosed this on Sunday, said some displaced people were already moving into the holding camps prepared for them.

Awogu said the level of the River Niger had continued to rise, making streets and flood channels that emptied into the River to flow backwards.

He said no fewer than 1,000 persons have been forced out of their homes.

Ogbaru is a coastal local government with all its 16 communities on the banks of River Niger.

He reported that a big cobra which found its way into an apartment in Atani, was killed with the assistance of operatives from the Atani Divisional Police Station.

According to him, the cobra was killed in Atani, the man in whose house it was killed miraculously escaped being bitten by the snake the previous night as he went into his Boys Quarters in search of some documents.

“On sighting the snake, he quickly shut the door and invited the police from Atani police division who teargassed the room and the reptile became uncomfortable, but as it made its way out, it was killed by those around,” he said.

Awogu advised people of the area to always shut their doors at all times and spread repellants to ward off the unwanted guests as most of them had been displaced from their natural habitat.

“Snakes and other dangerous reptiles are being driven out of their habitats by the flood and people’s homes are likely to be where the deadly animals may be seeking refuge,” he said.

The council chairman said more people were being displaced from their homes by the flood and that they had started moving into the three holding camps in the council.

He regreted that flooding had become a yearly experience for the people and assured them of care while in the camps.

“People are leaving their homes and heading to the holding centres created by the Anambra government for people in flood-prone local government areas.

“The task now is to ensure they have the necessities of existence like food, healthcare and other facilities, while waiting for the flood to recede.

“In addition to what the state government is doing, we are calling on the Federal Government through NEMA to come to our aid,” he said.
