Sector 5 forces of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in Jowhar were commended for their exemplary role in electoral security and for their support in improving infrastructure in HirShabelle State in Somalia .

On Sunday, HirShabelle State Vice President Yusuf Ahmed Hagar ‘Dabageed’ officially inaugurated the renovations completed by AMISOM and its partners at Mohamed Dheere Airport in Jowhar. He also commended AMISOM for working closely with Somali security forces to secure the recently concluded state upper house elections.

Vice-President Dabageed and his entourage were warmly welcomed by the Commander of AMISOM Sector 5, Brigadier. General Télesphore Barandereka at Sector Headquarters within the Jowhar Airport Complex where the two held a closed meeting.

AMISOM Sector 5 Commander Brig. General Barandereka later said that the Vice President congratulated AMISOM troops in Jowhar for their hard work in securing, together with Somali forces, the upper house elections in HirShabelle State as well as for their role in degrading threats posed by Al-Shabaab terrorists. in their area of ​​responsibility.

The sector commander said AMISOM forces in HirShabelle State have also been commended for “other work they continue to carry out in their area of ​​responsibility which covers part of the State of HirShabelle; he mentioned activities aimed at degrading the threat of Al-Shabaab, activities aimed at helping the population of HirShabelle and activities aimed at improving the infrastructure of the state of HirShabelle ”,

He added that the vice president of HirShabelle unveiled the new modernized runway at Mohamed Dheere airport in the city of Jowhar.

“The vice-president officially inaugurated the runway at Jowhar airport after the expansion work carried out by the Burundian contingent and its partners so that planes can land there. Previously, the airport could only accommodate helicopters, but now, after the expansion, the airport accommodates freighters that bring in containers. In other words, it meets international standards, ”he added.

Brigadier General Barandereka also said the HirShabelle Vice President recognized AMISOM’s efforts to enhance the knowledge and capacity of the HirShabelle State Police through training and mentoring.

“He also thanked us for other activities we have carried out, such as the training we are providing to HirShabelle security forces to increase their capabilities, so that they are ready to assume the responsibilities of the security of their country when AMISOM is finally withdrawing, ”he said.

AMISOM works closely and supports the Somali National Army (SNA) in the fight against terrorism in Somalia. In Jowhar, HirShabelle State, AMISOM and SNA forces often conduct joint security patrols to clear the main supply routes for improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and secure population centers against human beings. armed groups.
