African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops carried out an agricultural extension visit for women’s groups in Dhobley, Jubaland State, to promote and share best agricultural practices, in the aim to empower women.

The extension field visit was organized by Kenyan AMISOM troops, based in the town of Dhobley as part of their Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) activities.

During the field visit, the women on Wednesday visited a demonstration farm at AMISOM headquarters in Dhobley, which included a market gardening section, nurseries, a poultry section and a fish pond.

“It is inexpensive to maintain a mixed farm because the various components are symbiotically dependent on each other. Having the farms helps you empower yourself economically and at the same time provides opportunities for self-employment, ”said Sergeant Kennedy Juma, while introducing women to various projects on the farm.

The women have followed the procedure of establishing vegetable gardens and nurseries in their homes, which is essential for the conservation of the environment. They were also shown how to hatch chicks using incubators for the purpose of establishing poultry farms, to increase income and livelihoods.

At the end of the tour, the women were encouraged to set up vegetable farms on their farms, to supplement their income and for home consumption.

In addition, they were also advised to adopt the use of simple drip irrigation in their farms, in order to solve the problem of water scarcity in the area.

“Such socio-economic development initiatives are crucial to achieving lasting peace and stability and ensuring food security,” said Captain Getrude Abiyo, Head of the Women’s Engagement Team (FET) in Dhobley.

The farm visit is part of FET’s initiatives to empower Somali women to enhance their participation in community development and leadership.
