Aisha Buhari commends complementary roles of Govs’ wives

The First Lady, Aisha Buhari , praised the efforts of the Governors’ wives to strengthen advocacy against gender-based violence (GBV) and other forms of abuse against women and children in Nigeria.

The president’s wife praised them while receiving the wives of the governors, who paid her a courtesy visit to the State House, Abuja on Monday.

Expressing her concerns about the increase in cases of GBV, in particular cases of rape of minors, she called for all hands to be on the bridge to ensure the protection of the rights and privileges of victims.

The first lady also called on the wives of governors to continue to promote the welfare and welfare of women and children.

“You embody the love and compassion of motherhood and humanitarian support, especially towards disadvantaged people.

“As mothers, we have a duty to raise citizens for this country, both patriotic, conscientious and productive leaders and supporters,” she said.

However, she called on them to constantly advise their spouses on the need to leave lasting legacies at the end of their respective terms.

In her remarks, Ms Yemisi Fayemi, President of the Nigerian Governors’ Wives Forum, told the First Lady that they were visiting to update her on their activities regarding their advocacy against gender-based violence in their various states. .

Fayemi said GBV was a major concern during the COVID-19 lockdown, pointing out that rape cases have increased during the period.

However, she assured the First Lady of their determination to step up their fight against all forms of abuse against women and children in Nigeria.

Borno governor’s wife Ms Falmata Zulum, representing the Northern Governors Women’s Forum, said the group had opened a vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) center in Minna, Niger, to respond to medical emergencies women.

Zulum said the group has also distributed various palliative items to more than 2,000 underprivileged families in their various communities to cushion the effects of the COVID-19 lockdown.

Meanwhile, Ms Besty Obaseki, President of the Southern Governors’ Wives Forum, congratulated the First Lady for her concern for the well-being of women and children in Nigeria. (NAA)
