Actor Samantha Weinstein, Known for ‘Carrie’ Remake and ‘Alias Grace,’ Dies at 28 After Battling Ovarian Cancer

Actor Samantha Weinstein, known for her roles in the 2013 horror film “Carrie” and the Netflix series “Alias Grace,” has died at the age of 28 after battling ovarian cancer for more than two years. She passed away on May 14 in Toronto, her hometown, while on a belated honeymoon in Japan with her husband, Michael Knutson.

News of Weinstein’s passing was announced on her Instagram account, which featured images of the actor joyously floating against a celestial background. “After two and a half years of cancer treatment, and a lifetime of jet-setting around the world, voicing a plethora of cartoon animals, making music, and knowing more about life than most people ever will, she is off on her next adventure,” the post read. “Surrounded by her loved ones at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto.”

“Sam was actually a living embodiment of a sunbeam,” her father, David Weinstein, told The Canadian Press. “She was so full of positive energy that anyone who ever met her would say that she just lit up every room she walked into.”

Weinstein appeared in three episodes of the 2017 Netflix series “Alias Grace,” based on Margaret Atwood’s novel. Her highest-profile movie role was playing Heather, the high school bully who tormented Carrie (played by Chloë Grace Moretz), in the “Carrie” remake. In the infamous prom scene, Heather gets her comeuppance when Carrie unleashes her telekinetic powers.

According to her father, Weinstein was a prolific voice actor, and had been working on the animated series “Mittens & Pants” and “Dino Ranch” in recent weeks. Around the same time, she shared photos from her honeymoon in Japan in early May.

In 2022, Weinstein wrote an essay about her battle with cancer and her relationship with Knutson. “Getting cancer is the worst thing that’s ever happened to me, but in the strangest of ways it has also been the best thing,” she wrote. “I have more love in my life and for myself than I ever could have imagined, and I see every day as a gift.”

The entertainment industry has been mourning her loss, as her colleagues and fans have taken to social media to pay tribute to her life and work.

Rest in peace, Samantha Weinstein.
