ActionAid Nigeria urges small-holder women farmers on NAIC facilities

The ActionAid Nigeria has called on small-golder women farmers in Kogi to avail themselves of Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC) facilities for credit and get their farms insured.

Mr Friday Ogezi, Actionaid Nigeria Programmes Officer in Kogi, made the call at a one-day stakeholders meeting organised by ActionAid in collaboration with its local rights partners, Participation Initiative in Behavioural Change in Development (PIBCID) on Thursday in Lokoja.

The meeting was on state-level dissemination of report on “Assessment of Government Expenditure on Agriculture/Development of Community score cards on Small-Holder Women farmers Access to Agricultural Insurance Services in Nigeria”.

Ogezi said: “For us as a non-governmental irganisation, this is an evidence-based result used to engage stakeholders, particularly the government and the agency, NAIC responsible and saddled with the mandate to address these issues.

“We know that in Nigeria, the small-holder farmers are the ones responsible for the feeding of this country, improving food security but are faced with issues surrounding agricultural production, acceptability, affordability.

“The consistency in terms of insurance products are very minimal in this regard and this is affecting food security and also constituting a challenge towards attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in addressing food security issues in Nigeria.”

Ogezi urged farmers to approach NAIC office and see what information they had for them to get their farms insured and acquire loans to enhance agricultural production.

“In case of issues arising from unforseen circumstances, the farmer will recover at least from 50 per cent to 60 per cent so that your household and livelihood can also be improved.

Also speaking, Ms Halima Sadiq, Executive Director, PIBCID, identified low level of sensitisation and awareness campaign on how to access NAIC as part of the challenges facing the small-holder women farmers in the country.

Sadiq lamented the poor government funding of yearly remittance of premium subsidy to NAIC as well as the bank’s delays in remittal of farmers premium on time to NAIC.

She assured them that the report would serve as a guide for the small- holder women farmers and guarantee easy access to NAIC activities and services.
