Abuja Shippers’ Association gets new executive members

By Lucy Ogalue

The Abuja Shippers Association on Thursday elected new executive members to run its affairs.

Newly elected president, Chizoba Okwuchukwu of Chizodon Ltd. who was elected without opposition, pledged the commitment of the members of the executive to lead the maritime transport activities in Abuja.

The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that the election took place at the Association’s annual general meeting held at the Nigerian Shippers Council office in Abuja.

“I feel delighted. I feel humbled to be the president of this organization.

“We are going to develop an organizational development program. We will work hand in hand with all government agencies to streamline our exchanges.

“The plan I have for the shippers association in Abuja is to create an environment conducive to business development.

“We are going to organize workshops, bring in old and new members because without new members, the organization will not grow.

“We will train people who have no knowledge of import and export so that they can take an interest in the business we are running and explore the opportunities available,” he said.

He said the association would organize some kind of trade fair where importers and exporters could present their products to the public.

“We will invite the foreign missions to give us, if they have any, other organizations / business partners that arrive and we can work with them,” Okwuchukwu said.

Earlier, Ms. Rakiya Nuhu, Deputy Director of the Abuja Liaison Office, in her remarks, reiterated the importance of being a member of the association.

Nuhu urged members to contact colleagues who had not registered to join the association.

“As a member of the Shippers Association, you benefit from everything the Shippers Council has to offer in terms of helping your trade, shipping of goods and services.

“If you have a problem at the port, you come see us. If we have policies that we think will benefit you, we pass them on.

“The idea of wanting to join the association is to have a strong voice that can help you in your profession.

“So this is very important and we encourage people, especially exporters, to join the association,” she said.

Meanwhile, the association’s former president, Emeka Madueke, pledged his support to the newly elected officials to lead the association.

He said the former executive members had not been able to accomplish much due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, but urged the newly elected executive to thrive to lead the union.

“We didn’t do much with the time we had because of the pandemic that hit the world.

“We give the assurance that we will join forces with the new executive to see how we can push for the success of the association.

“We will do everything we can as former officials to support and keep the association moving forward,” said Madueke.

NAN reports that Mr. Nurudeen Yakubu of Port Energy Logistics has been elected vice president of the association.

Mr. Godwin Anih of Trustical Investment Ltd. was elected secretary; Mr. Ifesinachi Muoneme from Askinda has returned as public relations manager; and Enyi Obande was elected financial secretary.

Ms. Chika Onyia, who allegedly emerged as treasurer was disqualified for not being a registered member. (NAA)
