Nigerians in Diaspora Organization (NIDO), the Singapore branch appealed to the National Assembly to defend the principles that would further promote the unity and progress of the country.

NIDO-Singapore Chapter Vice-President Dr Jonathan Obaje gave his advice in a telephone interview with the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) in Abuja.

Obaje praised the 9th National Assembly led by Senate Speaker Ahmed Lawan and House Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila for encouraging the legislative processes so far in the country.

“We appreciate the courage of Mr. Lawan and Mr. Gbajabiamila in publicly accepting the overwhelming flaws in the 1999 unitary constitution which is now operational.

“We encourage the Senate and the House of Representatives to take a bold step to unite our country, to help lay a solid foundation for the acceptability of the outcome of the constitutional review.

“The right process is to allow Nigerians to choose, by referendum, to revise the Unitary Constitution of 1999 or the Constitution of the Federation of 1963.

“There is no amount of amendment that can change a unitary constitution into a federation constitution; it’s a futile effort, ”he said.

He described the two National Assembly leaders as the only people who could save Nigeria from looming disaster.

The vice-president of NIDO stressed the need for the legislature to urgently pass a bill allowing Nigerians to choose between using the framework of the unitary constitution or the federation, as the basis for constitutional review.

“It will help allay agitation and mistrust; once Nigerians have been allowed to make their choice, a significant overhaul of the constitution can take place.

“There is no longer any doubt that there is a need to review the security strategy, to anchor peace and significant progress in the country.

“Therefore, the appeal to Lawan and Gbajabiamila to save Nigeria now, as the last hope through upholding the principles of legislative processes that can lead to sustainable growth,” he added. (NAA)
