Meta don quickly remove new feature wey allow people use dem artificial intelligence tool make fake images from Instagram user content. Di feature na part of Muse Image, new AI image generation tool wey Meta release on Tuesday.
Di tool allow users of Meta AI chatbot tag public Instagram accounts and use content from those accounts create AI-generated images. But di feature quickly cause blowback because of privacy concerns.
Meta admit say dem “missed di mark” and di feature “no longer available”. Muse Image na Meta first try for AI image generation, but e face backlash because Instagram users dem opt in by default. Dis mean say anybody wey get public account fit get dem likeness use without dem knowledge or permission.
Hollywood union Sag-Aftra describe di U-turn as “win”. Dem don urge dem members and “all Instagram users” take action protect dem likeness, saying di feature na “utter miscalculation of public sentiment regarding di obvious dangers and harms inherent in such use”.
London-based human rights charity Privacy International also criticise di feature, tell BBC say e be “di latest sign AI companies see people’s images and data as raw material to be exploited”.
Meta add for dem decision to pull di feature: “Our intent na to provide useful creative tool and give people control over whether dem public content fit be referenced dis way. We don hear di feedback.”
When Meta announce Muse Image, dem say di feature limited to Instagram, but more AI features and integrations dey planned for WhatsApp, Facebook and Messenger. Dem also get AI video tool for development.
Meta decline to make any further comment.
