X-Men ’97 season 2 don finally land for Disney+ on July 1, and fans dey shake for the new episodes wey go show the mutants dey fight across time. Executive producers Eric and Julia Lewald, wey be married TV writers, say the show start from their dining room table. “We developed the show over our dining room table,” Eric tok, “and this is the one where all the magic came together.” The couple don dey animate X-Men since the ’90s, and dem know say the mutant superheroes get loyal legion of superfans.
Julia Lewald explain the genius of X-Men: “I think the genius in what the X-Men are is a group of teens, young people, who were being shunned or ostracized because they started to become different because of the way they were born. Society didn’t like that.” Eric add say, “All sorts of people come up to us that don’t quite feel like they’re part of their community, who don’t quite feel like they’re part of the mainstream culture. The word that came to us when we started doing the cons and talking to fans was it’s like a ‘found family.’ They accept each other and look out for each other.”
For season 2, the X-Men dey divided and thrown across different eras in time. Dem dey struggle to navigate their way home, and dem dey face a familiar foe: Apocalypse. “It gets to be pretty much all about them dealing with Apocalypse,” Eric Lewald say. The story span Ancient Egypt, the 1990s, and the distant future, and new characters like Polaris, Havok, Lady Deathstrike, Sabretooth, Mariko, and Danger dey join the mix.
Executive producer Larry Houston, wey don be with X-Men since the ’90s, describe the animated series as “a comic book that was never printed, but we are giving it to you on screen.” He say, “Working on this series has been an enormous amount of fun.” When ask if the X-Men go fit beat Apocalypse, Houston laugh and say, “That’s the thing everybody’s got to wait for. You’ll enjoy it when you get there.”
Season 2 of X-Men ’97 get nine episodes. The first three episodes drop on July 1, and the remaining six episodes go air weekly, with the final episode on August 12. The show dey take inspiration from beloved comics like The Rise of Apocalypse, Askani’son, and The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix. Already, a third season don get greenlight.
