Federal Government don launch FreeTV, new digital television platform wey go give Nigerians free access to over 100 TV channels. The thing happen on June 17, 2026, as part of Nigeria Digital Switch-Over programme.
With FreeTV, you no need to pay any subscription fee. You go fit watch news, sports, movies, music, educational programmes, children content, and even channels for indigenous languages. The platform go cover not only big cities but also rural and underserved areas.
You fit access FreeTV through satellite, terrestrial transmission, or the FreeTV mobile application. The government say you no need to buy new TV set. Your existing TV go work if you get compatible DVB-T2 or DVB-S2 decoder. Many people wey get free-to-air decoder fit already access the service.
According to National Broadcasting Commission, this platform dey part of efforts to deepen digital inclusion. The goal na to make sure more Nigerians benefit from technology, no matter where dem dey or how much dem get. The initiative go also boost local content production and create jobs for producers, editors, camera operators, sound engineers, technicians, and other media professionals.
Regional production centres for Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kano, and Benin go serve as hubs for content development. This launch mark another big step for Nigeria as we dey move from analogue to digital broadcasting. The final analogue switch-off still dey scheduled for December 31, 2028.
Authorities dey encourage Nigerians to check if their decoders dey compatible and to explore the new platform as the country dey move closer to a fully digital broadcasting ecosystem.
