Grammys add five new categories, African music category still dey shine

The Recording Academy don add five new categories for the 2027 Grammy Awards, to make the ceremony recognise more music genres and traditions.

According to the announcement wey Suliyat Tella publish on June 16, 2026, the new categories na Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, Best Latin Song, Best Asian Pop Music Performance, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, and Best Traditional Folk Album.

This one come two years after the Grammys create the Best African Music Performance category, wey give African music e own special award for the first time.

The African music category start during the 66th Grammy Awards ceremony for 2024, to recognise recordings wey carry elements of African musical traditions and cultural expressions.

South African singer Tyla win the category first for 2024 with her global hit song Water. She beat Nigerian artists Burna Boy, Davido featuring Musa Keys, Ayra Starr, and Asake and Olamide, wey all dey among the nominees.

For the 67th Grammy Awards for 2025, Nigerian singer Tems win the category with her song Love Me JeJe, becoming the second artist to receive the award.

Tyla come back again to claim the award for the 68th Grammy Awards with her song PUSH 2 START, wey make her the first artist to win the Best African Music Performance category two times.

The creation of the African music category follow the growing global audience for sounds from the continent, including Afrobeats and amapiano, wey don gain international recognition for recent years.

The Recording Academy new additions go introduce more categories focused on specific musical traditions and collaborations. Best Asian Pop Music Performance go recognise contemporary pop music from Asian artists, while Best Latin Song go honour songwriting for the Latin music space.

The 2027 Grammy Awards go mark the first ceremony where the five newly introduced categories go dey presented.
