We like to say: let am cook.”
Anthropic even show feature where coding agents dey write notes to themselves, den consolidate dem to get better for codebase over time. Di companies wey come demo no be only big engineering shops, though Spotify and Delivery Hero dey dia. Apps wey dey help you build apps. Di abstraction dey climb, and e dey climb toward people wey no write code.
One Anthropic lead tok say Claude “probably as good as a midlevel engineer at writing code” today. Code just dey happen to be di cleanest demonstration of dat loop. Di loop itself no be about code. Dat na di tin wey most of di coverage dey miss.
Di headline story na say “engineers write less code by hand.” Di actual story na say di gap between a person with an idea and a working tin dey collapse. And code only ever be one expression of dat gap. When di demo na “Claude shipped a pull request,” developers dey argue about whether dat good or bad for developers. Fair argument. But e dey bury di bigger one: di same capability wey write pull request fit build di small internal tool wey marketer need, di script wey reconcile two messy spreadsheets, di pipeline wey turn folder of notes into published draft.
None of dat na “software development” for job-title sense. All of am now dey buildable by somebody wey fit describe wetin dem want. I no be engineer. I run content and operations. One year ago, if I need tool wey no exist, I get three options: buy something close enough, wait for somebody to build am, or do without. Now dey fourth — describe am and get agent to build am for me, around how I actually work. Dat na di unlock wey “coding agent” frame dey hide.
Di biggest beneficiaries of agents wey write code no be di people wey already write code. Dem be di people wey never fit. Di leverage no dey accrue to engineers wey dey get 20% faster. E dey accrue to operators wey dey go from zero tools to dia own tools. And e dey line up with everytin else wey dey ship right now.
Di same week as Code with Claude, Google show search agents wey build you custom mini-app from single question. Different company, same vector: software dey become sometin you ask for instead of sometin you hire for. Di startups wey dey demo “apps wey build apps” just be di middle of dat curve. Dis no be clean win, and di room know am. Outside di conference, plenty developers dey push back hard. Researchers dey warn say di flood of unreviewed code dey create security and maintenance debt wey nobody dey pay down yet. Some engineers say dia own skills dey atrophy. Even Anthropic people admit say di old software best practices still apply, and say plenty teams don lose sight of dem for di rush.
Take dat serious. Shipping code wey you no fit read, at scale, into production wey people depend on, na how you build slow-motion disaster. But notice who dat warning actually be for. E be for teams wey dey hand off oversight on systems where di blast radius be other people. For operator wey dey build small tool for dia own workflow, di blast radius be dia own afternoon. Di downside na script wey no run. Di upside na leverage wey no exist one year ago.
So call am wetin e be. No be coding agent — na everything agent wey dey happen to be best at code right now. Di story no be say machines dey write software. E be say di door to building software just open for everybody wey bin lock out of am, and most of dem never walk through yet.
