Lagos police yarn: old video wey dey show herdsmen arrest na fake news

Di Lagos State Police Command don come out to yarn about one viral video wey dey circulate for social media. Di video wey dey show some men wey dem arrest for Ikorodu area with arms and ammunition, but police say na old tori wey happen over three years ago.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, release statement on Sunday say di video no be current. E say, ‘Di Lagos State Police Command wish to state unequivocally say di video wey dey circulate for social media platforms wey dey show arrest of some men wey dem allegedly find with arms and ammunition for Ikorodu, Lagos State, na old clip of incident wey happen over three years ago and e no reflect di current security situation for Ikorodu or any part of Lagos State.’

Di command warn say di recirculation of dis outdated content fit create unnecessary fear and apprehension among residents. Dem urge di public make dem disregard di video and no share unverified information wey fit undermine public confidence and peace.

Police also warn social media users and content creators against spreading false and alarmist stories. Dem say anybody wey deliberately spread misinformation or fake news go face legal consequences. Adebisi state, ‘Di Command further warn social media users and content creators against di dissemination of false, unverified and alarmist stories wey fit cause public disorder. Individuals wey dem find deliberately spreading misinformation or fake news go dey investigated and prosecuted in accordance with extant laws.’

Meanwhile, di Commissioner of Police for Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, don order intensified security deployment across strategic locations and flashpoints for di state. Di operation include increased deployment of personnel and operational assets to black spots, strategic locations, and entry and exit points across Lagos State.

Police say di initiative dey carried out in collaboration with other security and safety agencies to ensure sustained peace and security. Dem encourage residents to go about dia lawful activities without fear, as adequate security measures don dey emplaced to guarantee protection of lives and property.

Di command also urge residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies with credible and timely information on suspicious movements and activities within dia communities.
