Orlando Pirates don finally win the Betway Premiership title for the first time in 14 years, after dem beat Orbit College 2-0 for Mbombela Stadium yesterday. The victory give dem the championship by one point, ending Mamelodi Sundowns eight-year domination of the league.
Both goals wey Pirates score come from own goals wey Orbit College defenders make. Thalente Mbatha pressurise Orbit goalkeeper Sabelo Nkomo for stoppage time of first half, and Nkomo make big mistake wey lead to first own goal. The second own goal come later, and Pirates just need to hold on to win.
This win also mean Pirates don complete a historic domestic treble, because dem don already win MTN8 and Carling Knockout Cup earlier this season. For Orbit College, the result mean dem go back to Motsepe Foundation Championship after just one season for the top flight. Dem lose 18 games and concede 47 goals, the worst record for the league.
Magesi FC beat Richards Bay 1-0 to claim the relegation play-off spot, where dem go meet Cape Town City and Milford FC. Marumo Gallants survive relegation after drawing 0-0 with Stellenbosch, finishing with 25 points.
For the top eight, Durban City join Pirates, Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, AmaZulu, Sekhukhune United, Golden Arrows, and Polokwane City for MTN8 next season. Chiefs lose their last match against Chippa United, but dem don improve under co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze.
