Di National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, don partner with di National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, to make biometric verification easy for prospective corps members across Nigeria. Di scheme say dis collaboration go help registration go smoothly as dem dey use technology to improve service delivery and reduce wahala for mobilisation.
NYSC Director-General, Olakunle Nafiu, wey be brigadier-general, yarn dis matter during a forum with di News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, for Abuja. E talk am ahead of NYSC 53rd anniversary celebration wey go happun on 22 May. E say di partnership na part of efforts to deepen digital reforms inside di scheme and make registration, mobilisation, payments, and record-keeping processes digitised to improve operational efficiency nationwide.
Nafiu explain say dem dey try to move with technology so dat registration go easier for corps members. E say some people dey go register and wait for hours for cybercafes or shops. So dem dey look at situation wey from di comfort of dia homes, dem fit log in, provide details and register. Dem dey work with NIMC to get biometrics, e add.
Di DG say corps members dey use electronic identity cards wey dem fit access through mobile phones. Verification procedures dey streamlined more through integration with di national identity database to reduce administrative bottlenecks nationwide. E attribute mobilisation delays to increasing graduate numbers, budgetary constraints, inadequate orientation camp facilities, and delays by tertiary institutions wey dey forward approved Senate lists for prospective corps members.
Nafiu say di Federal Government increase NYSC annual mobilisation quota from 400,000 to 450,000 corps members. But rising enrolment dey continue put pressure on camps, staffing strength, and operational funding. Di scheme wey start for 1973 with about 2,346 corps members, now get fewer than 6,000 officials wey dey manage more than 450,000 participants across Nigeria.
E say inadequate orientation camp facilities remain major challenge because some camps no fit accommodate corps members wey dem post to participating states. E commend Lagos, Gombe, Adamawa, Enugu, and Osun for construction and renovation projects wey dem do to improve camp capacity and accommodation for corps members.
Nafiu talk say di Federal Government dey pay allowances and fund orientation activities, but state governments suppose provide good camp facilities. Local governments suppose also provide corps lodges and support facilities. E say some governors go feel say because dem donate rice, cows or money, dem don do enough. NYSC dey engage stakeholders to improve support for activities across Nigeria.
