Senegal don finally take full control of dia strategic Yakaar-Teranga gas project, as American company Kosmos Energy agree to comot. Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko announce say the deal no involve any financial compensation for Senegal.
The exploration licence go now transfer to state-owned oil company PETROSEN through ministerial order. The Yakaar-Teranga field dey inside Cayar Offshore Profond block north of Dakar, and e get about 25 trillion cubic feet of gas.
This gas field na one of Senegal most important deepwater assets, alongside Sangomar oil field and Greater Tortue Ahmeyim LNG project. At MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power Summit for Dakar on December 10, 2025, Ministry of Energy, Petroleum and Mines talk say dia strategy no be nationalisation.
But later, Energy Minister Birame Souleye Diop yarn say Senegal want nationalise the project and give PETROSEN power to develop am for domestic gas use. The licence originally suppose expire for July 2026, and PETROSEN go take over according to contract.
Kosmos Energy don confirm dia withdrawal, ending dia 90% operating stake. The company don dey face challenges to secure commercial development plan. Now, PETROSEN be sole operator.
The government see Yakaar-Teranga as key for industrialisation, domestic energy, and LNG export. But analysts warn say state control increase pressure on capacity to get financing and technical skills for deepwater project.
