Orban don fall! Hungary election shake am after 16 years for power

Hungary don witness one historic election wey shake the country political landscape. Prime Minister Viktor Orban, wey don dey rule for 16 years, don finally concede defeat to opposition leader Péter Magyar. The thing shock many pipo because Orban don dey like strongman for Europe all these years.

Election results wey dey come out show say Magyar Tisza movement don win big. With about 53% of votes wey dem don count, projections dey show say Tisza fit get up to 135 seats out of 199 for parliament. That one mean say dem fit get supermajority wey go allow dem change constitution if dem want.

Orban talk say the result na “painful” for him and him party, Fidesz. “The responsibility and possibility of governing was not given to us,” him tell supporters for Budapest. Him say him don congratulate the winning party and Fidesz go serve as opposition from now.

For him own side, Magyar post for social media say Orban don call am to congratulate am for victory. “Thank you, Hungary!” Magyar write as thousands of him supporters gather for Danube river bank to celebrate.

This election matter don draw attention from all over the world. Orban don dey known as strong ally of both US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Him style of “illiberal democracy” don make am hero for far-right movements globally but headache for European Union leaders.

Turnout for this election break record. By 6:30 pm local time, over 77% of eligible voters don cast their ballot – the highest number since communism fall for 1990s. Hungarian pipo show say dem serious about this vote.

Orban don dey rule Hungary since 2010, winning four back-to-back elections. But this time around, things change. Magyar, wey be 45-year-old former insider for Orban government, break away from Fidesz just two years ago. Him campaign focus on fighting corruption and improving public services.

Many Hungarians don tire of economic stagnation and rising living costs. Reports of government corruption and oligarchs close to Orban amassing wealth don turn many pipo against the longtime leader.

The election don get international dimension too. US Vice President JD Vance visit Hungary last week to campaign for Orban. Trump self don endorse Orban and even call into one rally before the vote. But all that support no help am win.

For Europe side, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen celebrate the result. “Europe’s heart is beating stronger in Hungary tonight,” her write for X. “Hungary has chosen Europe. A country reclaims its European path.”

Orban don dey constant problem for EU, especially concerning support for Ukraine. Him don block EU decisions multiple times, including one $105 billion loan for Ukraine wey other EU countries want give. With Orban out of power, that blockage fit clear.

Magyar describe the election as “a choice between East or West, propaganda or honest public discourse, corruption or clean public life.” Him talk say Hungary need return to European democratic values.

Orban campaign focus heavily on Ukraine matter. Him portray Ukraine as “hostile” to Hungary and vow to continue him crackdown on what him call “fake civil society organisations, bought journalists, judges and politicians.” But that message no resonate with enough voters this time.

Both sides accuse each other of planning election irregularities. Fidesz and Tisza both launch platforms for reporting violations. Orban even accuse Ukraine and EU of trying to interfere in the vote to install “pro-Ukraine” government.

Russian secret services don dey plot to interfere and tip the election for Orban favor, according to media reports including The Washington Post. But even with all these international forces at play, Hungarian voters make their choice clear.

Marcell Mehringer, 21-year-old voter for Budapest, talk say him vote “so that Hungary will finally be a so-called European country.” Him add say young pipo need do their civic duty “to unite this nation a bit and to break down these boundaries borne of hatred.”

Orban chief of staff Gergely Gulyás talk say the record high turnout show that “Hungarian democracy is extremely strong.” But the results show say that same democracy don reject Orban long rule.

The defeat na big blow to global far-right movements wey see Orban as model. For United States, MAGA supporters don dey look up to Orban Hungary as example of conservative, anti-globalist politics in action. Now that model don collapse.

Orban journey from liberal, anti-Soviet activist to Russia-friendly nationalist don come to sudden stop. Him early days as democracy activist contrast sharply with him later years as strongman wey critics accuse of dismantling democratic institutions.

Hungary relationship with EU don dey seriously strained under Orban. Although Hungary na one of smaller EU countries with 9.5 million population, Orban don repeatedly use him veto to block decisions wey require unanimity. That era likely don end.

Magyar face tough battle because Orban control Hungary public media and vast swaths of private media market. Electoral system changes and gerrymandering by Fidesz mean say Tisza need get about 5% more votes than Fidesz to achieve simple majority. But dem surpass that target.

Ethnic Hungarians for neighboring countries, wey traditionally vote overwhelmingly for Orban party, get right to vote in Hungarian elections. But even that advantage no save Orban this time.

The atmosphere for election day mix tension and hope. Orsolya Rozgonyi, 28-year-old HR manager, tell AFP say she “full of hope” and “optimistic about the change” as she join Tisza supporters for Budapest.

For Fidesz supporters side, the mood more subdued. Hundreds gather near press centre, cordoned off from journalists, as results dey come in.

Maria Toth, 31-year-old stay-at-home mother of two, talk say “it is so important for us that Viktor Orban stays in power.” Her add say she feel Hungary “under siege from so many directions and big powers like Brussels are trying to dictate how we live.” But her view no represent majority this time.

Orban warn of “major crisis” awaiting Europe after casting him ballot. “Fortunately we have a lot of friends in the world. From America to China to Russia and the Turkish world,” him talk. But Hungarian voters choose different direction.

Magyar call on voters to report suspected vote-buying, intimidation or other violations while urging calm. Him ask supporters to stay peaceful and cheerful, and if results confirm expectations, “let’s throw a big, Hungarian carnival.”

Now the carnival don start for Tisza supporters as Hungary enter new political era. After 16 years of Orban rule, the country prepare for leadership change wey go affect not just Hungary but Europe and beyond.
