NBA release statement say dem dey monitor political and legal matter as 2027 election dey come. Dem talk say the way some lawyers dey interpret Electoral Act 2026 dey cause serious concern for democracy and rule of law.
Section 83 of Electoral Act 2026 clear well well: “No court in Nigeria shall entertain jurisdiction over any suit or matter pertaining to the internal affairs of a political party.” The law even stop court from granting any interim orders for such matter.
But wetin NBA dey see now different. Lawyers dey file cases wey violate the Act, and some courts sef dey grant injunctions wey no suppose happen. NBA talk say this trend no good for our democracy at all.
“What we now see are situations where actions are not only instituted in Courts by lawyers in clear violation of the Act, but Courts purportedly grant interim and/or interlocutory injunctions in clear contempt of statutory provisions of the law,” the statement yarn.
The association warn say lawyers wey continue this kind practice risk facing disciplinary action. Dem talk say any lawyer wey deliberately file action wey go make court interfere for party matter go face Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee.
NBA remind lawyers say dem be Ministers in the Temple of Justice, not political agents. Dem talk say filing such cases na abuse of court process and violation of professional responsibility.
This move by NBA come as ADC crisis dey escalate. The association talk say dem no go allow judiciary become tool for political maneuvering. Dem urge courts to stay vigilant and resist being drawn into political theatrics.
