90 schools participate in Maltina Games in Bauchi

By Ahmed Kaigama

No less than 90 secondary schools in the state of Bauchi participated in the Maltina 2021 School Games, organized in Bauchi.

The Nigeria News Agency (NAN) reports that the game, organized by Nigeria Breweries PLC, was aimed at intervening in school sports.

The intervention involved a series of athletic athletics competitions in inter-school sports competitions, to train future sports champions in secondary schools across Nigeria.

Mr Peter Bulus, sports director of the Bauchi State Sports Department and coordinator of the National School Sports Federation (NSSF), told NAN on Thursday that 90 schools in the state participated.

“It was successful and encouraging from the preliminaries to the finals. Today (Thursday), the best talents and schools will emerge, ”he said.

Bulus said the Maltina School Games were a timely intervention to save the dying school sport culture and, more importantly, help produce quality young and healthy minds who could rightly be called the leaders of tomorrow.

A teacher, Mr. Dauda Bitrus, from a secondary school in Ndit, in the local government area of Bogoro, said the competition encouraged the participation of young players in athletic athletic events.

He urged the government to support the competition to encourage and discover young talent.

“Talent is wasted in society due to a lack of coaching and mentoring young people from their school years,” he said.

Mr. Aliyu Sambo, a participant from Sa’adu Zungur Secondary School, congratulated Maltina for organizing the competition.

“I competed in the 800 meter race during the competition which was exciting and encouraging for me. Track and field sports are losing their relevance in schools because attention is not paid to these sports.

“The government must do more to encourage us and organize such competitions between schools in the state,” he said.

NAN reports that athletic sports included the 800m, 400m, 200m, 4 × 1m relay, high jump, long jump, javelin and shot put. (NAA)
