Omo, na hot wahala dey cook for Brazil o! Dem don suspend dredging work wey dey happen for one big Amazon tributary, na after plenty Indigenous communities begin protest for di rivers wey dem dey see as vital for their life.
For like two weeks now, hundreds of these Indigenous people don dey protest outside Cargill port terminal wey be US agribusiness company wey dey northern Brazil. Dem wan make sure say President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva dey hear their cry no be small!
Di protesters de vex because dem no gree make dem dredge and develop di Amazon rivers for grain exports wey dey affect dem way of life. Di government come release statement say dem don suspend di contract for annual dredging work wey dem wan do for Tapajos River as small concession for negotiation.
Di protesters don demand make dem cancel one decree wey Lula sign for August wey classify major Amazon Rivers as priority for cargo navigation and private port expansion. Dem also de complain about federal tender wey dey worth 74.8 million reais (about $14.2 million) wey follow plan to manage and dredge di Tapajos River.
As dem don suspend di dredging process, di government come promise say dem go first consult di local communities before dem go fit start any work again. Wetin be di use of making plans wen una no consult di people wey e go affect?
Dem say, ‘Na our river matter we dey talk about o!’ And di right thing be say make dem listen to di people! Dis protest don draw attention to di wahala wey dey go on and di need to respect Indigenous rights and di environment.
So far, di ball don start rolling, but how e go end na di big question wey dey hang like K-leg. Dey fit go talk and resolve everything before e escalate or wetin? Naija people, make we dey follow di gist as e dey happen, abeg!
