According to wetin we hear from The PUNCH, dem don set up one seven-man committee wey go look into wetin lawmakers don yan so far. Dis committee go try to resolve all the kasala wey dey around the proposed law. Dem set am up after dem lock demselve for room for three hours, dey reason how the Electoral Act (Repeal and Enactment) Bill dey go be.
The committee dey headed by Niyi Adegbonmire, wey be the Senate Committee on Judiciary and wetin-wetin. E get other big names wey join like Adamu Aliero, Aminu Tambuwal and Adams Oshiomhole. Dem don give dem three days to wrap up work, and e go be today, Tuesday.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, talk say dem gree set dis committee to harmonise everything wey dem discuss for plenary. E stress say na important matter wey dey ground, especially as elections dey come. Akpabio talk say dem need to dey careful make dem no land inside tribunal wahala later.
The Senate Committee on Electoral Matters don talk say dem go check the amendments wey go make electoral process better and more transparent, no be beans! Dis committee suggest say make dem pass the new Electoral Act (Repeal and Enactment) Bill wey go increase voter participation and make sure say no be any bad thing happen for election ground again.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele even talk say dis bill go carry serious punishment for electoral wahala like vote-buying, wey fit reach N5m fine, two years for prison, and 10 years wahala for anybody wey wan contest election again. Na serious matter, abeg!
Bamidele also yan say dem go start to dey use electronic voter ID, plus dem go fit send results straight from polling units electronically. Even dem go let inmates vote, no be small thing! E mean say anybody wey dey prison fit get chance to participate for elections, dey no be mumu.
But e get some big names wey no dey happy, like Femi Falana wey be Senior Advocate of Nigeria wey don dey shout say National Assembly dey waste time. E talk say if dem no move fast, everybody go dey look election like joke. Even major opposition parties dey complain say National Assembly no dey show enough urgent for this matter. Dem dey fear say if dis delays continue, e fit spoil everything.
