Wahala don dey your side o! The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) just drop beta news wey go make internet users jump for joy. Dem don approve six new Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to join the waka for our broadband market. E be like say competition go sweet as e go increase the number of ISPs from 225 to 231 now. Dis new ISPs na Intellvision Technologies, Granet Technologies, Fiber Sonic, Dasol Solution Services, Boost ISP, and Amazon Kuiper Nigeria. Abeg, no forget, five of dem dey Lagos; only one dey Owerri for Imo State! E mean say Lagos still sabi how to party for broadband matter.
But e no be only good news be dis, my people. The broadband market still dey face gidi gidi challenges. Many traditional ISPs dey waka like tortoise because dem dey struggle to compete with big boys like MTN, Airtel, and Globacom wey get plenty customer base and cheaper data options. E don reach to hold small ISPs with regulatory support before dem go vanish like puff-puff.
Chidi Ibisi, wey dey run Business Development for Broadbased Communications, don talk say small providers no dey look for wahala. Dem just want framework wey go allow dem coexist with the big boys. He also warn say if beta measures no dey, big yansh fit push small ISPs go outside market. Competition, no be kill, but make everybody dey shine like sun!
Now, Kehinde Joda wey dey manage Regulatory and Public Relations for FibreOne talk say competition no be the only wahala wey dem dey face. Dem dey still rely on old business models wey no get clear service differentiation. Plus, dey still dey find money for new fibre networks wey no fit turn to gold for financial matters. Na as we dey talk, dem satellite-based ISPs like Starlink dey gather people wey wan sharp sharp connect to internet.
Starlink don show say e get choco for Nigeria as e don become second-largest ISP with over 66,000 customers wey dey pursue fast internet. Amazon Kuiper dey ready to challenge am again, and dis go increase the pressure on Starlink. Dis means say, Nigerian market dey open to more international broadband providers, and dem dey aim to bring fast internet access to people wey never see better connection before.
As Nigeria dey run for broadband matter, the NCC don put mechanism wey go make broadband rollout quick, especially for areas wey dey neglected by traditional telcos. Now wey plenty new licenses don dey issue, the broadband competition no go slack as satellite operators dey expand on top their game. E be like say Nigeria dey prepare for the internet future wey go sweet everybody.
