NERC Don Blow Whistle: We Dey Lose Lives for Power Sector

Make we gather for corner as NERC don raise alarm about electricity wahala wey dey kill people. E no dey funny again, as dem talk say plenty pipo dey die for power sector due to human error and poor training. Dis talk na from recent meeting wey happen wey dem call stakeholders for one day engagement on how to better vocational training for power sector.

Dat meeting wey happen for Thursday na collaboration between NAPTIN and Explicit Communications wey get support from French Development Agency and European Union. Dem dey call am ‘Building skilled manpower for a sustainable power sector’. But wetin be sustainable if people dey die anyhow?

According to wahala wey dey happen for the sector, technicians and ordinary people dey face serious danger while dem dey do their work. NERC report show say last year alone, 112 Nigerians die because of electricity accidents, and this year, dem don record plenty injuries too.

Joseph John, wey represent NERC, yarn say “if we no train our people well, all the money wey we dey invest for power go just waste.” E dey stress say skilled manpower na the secret for beta power supply but dem no fit just recite investment make am work.

Omoh, wetin go happen when electricity dey cut and wey meter dey dey ground? E mean say na skilled people need to come do am before we fit see light again. John don talk say dem need to improve training to reduce the accidents wey dey happen almost every day. Accidents wey dey happen na because people no sabi wetin dem dey do! Plus, the pressure to restore power quick dey cause plenty wahala.

For the meeting, Ahmed Nagode, wey na Director-General of NAPTIN talk say dem dey work hard to connect training with the real needs of the electricity industry. E say dem don improve plenty things for NAPTIN and dey create more programs to fit the kinda training wey dey happen for di industry. E also thank people wey dey support dem with funding, say na dem go help dem also build capacity.

Adeniyi Adejola from AEDC talk say NAPTIN don help dem train about 40% of their skilled workers. This one dey show say if we fit work together, we fit make sure say electricity no dey cut again, and jobs go dey for youth.

As stakeholders don gather, dem make wey focus on how to ensure say we go fit reduce the number of deaths and accidents wit better training. Na only if we dey train our people much better, we go fit high-five to beta power supply.
