Nigerian Refugees: Over 400K Still Dey Displace, Gist Waka Reach Everywhere!

Wahala no dey finish for Naija o! Over 408,000 Nigerians still dey japa go different countries because of wahala wey Boko Haram and ISWAP dey cause for northeast since 2009. E be like say, no matter wetin government dey do, people still dey run away from their home.

According to the latest gist from United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), dem don count 408,257 Nigerians wey don flee to Niger, Cameroon, and Chad. Na Niger Republic get most of dem, about 258,653 people dey camp for Diffa region and border towns like Kuluk and Gashua. Cameroon no dey too far behind, with 126,892 refugees wey dey chill mostly for Minawao camp. Chad waka small, just 21,636 refugees dey for Baga Sola area.

Dem people wey don scatter from their communities, na primarily from Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa. Places like Banki, Pulka, and Maidagali don suffer plenty attacks from insurgents. E mad as the number of Nigerians wey dey displaced no wan reduce, even with all the gists wey government dey yarn about repatriation.

For 2025, only 26,473 refugees manage return home through different means, but e still no sweet as the total na only 131,815 since 2019. Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State don dey try, he don even sign agreement with Chad to bring back 7,790 people. But wetin we go talk, security wahala still dey for northeast no gree return wey go last long.

Wonders no dey cease. ISWAP don intensify dem attacks since early 2025. For just three months, dem don launch 12 coordinated assaults on military bases. E don make plenty civilian communities scatter again, wey don just recently resettle. According to National Human Rights Commission, wahala pass wahala! At least 2,266 people don die from bandits and insurgents for first half of 2025 alone.

June 2025 shine as the most violent month, with 606 deaths recorded, including 200 in one single attack wey happen for Yelwata. Even though abductions no decrease much, attacks on security personnel dey increase, and e don cost plenty lives too. We go argue say the matter never finish, as daily attacks still dey affect civilians and security forces alike.

Governor Zulum don visit some of these camps, promising N500,000 for any refugee wey wan return, with women-headed families getting extra N100,000. But how person go rejoice with the promise when everywhere still dey dangerous? Only 32% of the refugees for UNHCR survey say dem ready to go back home.

Psychosocial wahala dey ground as well, with 70% of the displaced people dey experience one form of trauma wey affect their mental health. The government and NGOs dey struggle to fund these services, while returns wey don happen before don make some people to run wahala again, because fresh attacks don greet dem for their area.

Naija dey face big internal displacement crisis, with 3.5 million people dey wander about, and 2.3 million dey for northeast alone. E no go easy at all! Wetin we go fit do as we dey face this serious matter? Hope say government go fit provide the right security and support for our people wey don suffer finish! Make we dey shine our eyes as this matter dey unfold.
