My country people, make I yarn you wetin dey happen for the football pitch wey dey hot now. This one na story of Dennis Onyango, the 40-year-old Uganda goalkeeper wey don come back from retirement. E wan put young boys for their place for AFCON.
Omo, Onyango no be ordinary player. E don dey shine for this game since time wey some of our paddy dem never born. After four years wey e don chill for bench, him don hear call from coach Paul Put wey talk say him sabi fit help the national team. Na wetin make am change him mind wey dem dey prepare for 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
As dem dey play for AFCON in Morocco, Onyango dey represent pure wisdom. Dis guy don get over 80 caps for national team, and for 2017, him help Uganda qualify for AFCON after 39 years wait. Na him dey carry the experience like trophy, no be small.
“I no fit ignore this chance to dey play for AFCON again,” Onyango yarn. “Dis tournament dey special, e fit carry scouts wey go change your whole life. Na wetin dey drive me and I wan motivate my teammates, especially the fresh goalkeepers.”
As for age, my brother, who say age dey matter? E dey draw inspiration from Cristiano Ronaldo and Elias Pelembe wey dey still shine at their age. “Age no fit stop wetin you fit achieve, na wetin you carry come dey important,” he talk with confidence. Onyango wan make sure say him dey ready to guide others as dem dey play.
Him dey face plenty young keepers wey dey shine for camp but e no dey feel threatened, rather e dey see am as competition wey go make dem all sharp. Oniango dey push dem and dedi dey support dem to perform well. “Iron sharpens iron,” e talk as him dey explain wetin dey keep am ginger.
When dem play their first match and lose 3-1 to Tunisia, dem dey look for rebound against Tanzania for their next match. E no go easy but Onyango dey carry the calm spirit. E sabi wetin him dey bring to the table, especially how e fit blend with the young players for dressing room. E no dey destruct and even dey act like bridge between technical staff and players.
“I dey here to help my boys understand wetin e mean to represent Uganda, especially for AFCON. E be like big game wey fit turn around future.” E don talk say him dey ready to step up for dem young lads wey no don experience AFCON before.
So my people, as we dey follow dem through this AFCON journey, make we keep our fingers crossed for Onyango and the Uganda Cranes. E no easy to keep the flag flying, but with this kind leadership and determination, e fit work wonders for dem. We go dey watch how e all go pan out, make we send our prayers for dem!
