Nah wah o! Maine University don finally gree to sign collective bargaining agreement wey dem don dey wait for since! Graduate students wey be part-time workers, no be small matter.
For dis 3-year contract wey dem ratify, 438 people vote ‘yes’ dey give only 3 ‘no’ for University of Maine Graduate Workers Union–UAW. E be like say Maine don become national attraction for graduate education and research. Chancellor Dannel Malloy and University President Joan Ferrini-Mundy, dem don yarn say dis agreement na balance wey reflect wetin the students deserve.
Dem talk say dis new contract go give graduate workers better pay and conditions, wey go start for July 1, 2026. Wetin this one mean be say, na so e go dey until then before dem go fit collect any beta cash from di System.
More than 90% of di people wey dey belong to UMGWU na research and teaching assistants, and dem dey help boost Maine’s public universities status well well. Even though some federal money don waka, Maine dey try hard to push research and keep dem students active.
For 2023, UMS don show say dem sabi gree UAW wey fit represent about 900 part-time workers without wahala. Dis move fit be light for other states wey no fit gree similar agreements.
Some other unions dey around too, like Associated Clerical Office Laboratory Technical Staff of the Universities of Maine (ACSUM/COLT) and Police Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #100, to name small.
At the end of the day, this contract na big plus for di graduate workers wey don dey hustle, no be small!
