Na Monday evening, police officers wey dey attached to Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit for Lagos come nab journalist Sodeeq Atanda after dem collect him wife and nine-month-old pikin join. Na true story be dis, and FIJ comot for ground confirm am!

Sodeeq na big man for Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), and dem no smile for this matter. Dem say as police capture him wife and the small baby, dem carry dem go Owutu Police Station for Ikorodu, wahala wey be like movie.

Sodeeq wife talk say na dem force her call her husband come lie say pikin dey sick for hospital. As she reach street wey near their house, police dey wait for Am. As Sodeeq waka come, dem just handcuff am and carry him go Force Headquarters for Obalende.

But here be the koko, nobody don hear from IGP Monitoring Unit about dis arrest. FIJ get the report ready, but police, dem dey do like say dem no see or hear anything. Na like dis dem dey operate lately, dey using fear and scatter journalists.

Omo, dis no be Sodeeq first time wey police dey press him neck. Just last September, dem don question am for 11 hours on top wetin dem call “cyberbullying” wey come from some big man wey no fit carry him own matter. He refuse to expose him sources, speak true! Dem dey try suppress wetin no concern dem.

We fit remember say Naija journalists don dey face plenty wahala lately as police dey use arrest and wrongfully waylay dem just because dem dey do their work. Na big wahala wey dey grow for obodo Naija! Every body dey talk am, say this one don dey affect press freedom.

Even as President Bola Tinubu dey talk say make people learn from SSS DG wey sabi respect journalists, na dia police Dey do dis koko to show say dem no send anybody. E get as dis matter dey be like say dem wan intimidate people wey dey dig for truth; no be wetin democracy suppose be!

Rights activist dey chin chin dey call out police for dis kind behavior, they no dey rest o! Plenty people wey dey run di information dey don cry foul say police dey use Cybercrimes Act do instrument to hold journalists. Omo, e no go better for dem.

As we dey keep our eye on this matter, many dey expect say IGP go talk something, but as e stand now na like dem don gree keep mute. We just dey pray say Sodeeq and his family go dey alright. Na so e be for Naija, but we go continue dey fight for wetin be correct!
