5 dead, 12 injured when tour bus plunges off cliff in western Indonesia
North Sumatra
A tour bus plunged down a 30-meter cliff in the Indonesian province of North Sumatra, killing at least five people and injuring 12 on Monday night, local police said Tuesday.

The accident took place in Kuta Saga village in Pakpak Bharat district at around 10:15 p.m. local time and brake failure is believed to be the cause, the traffic police chief of the district, Mujiono.

All the victims, he said, have been evacuated by emergency response teams and taken to nearby hospitals.

Traffic accidents, often caused by drivers’ lack of road safety knowledge and poor infrastructure, are frequently reported in Indonesia. ■
