Four men on Friday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly being members of a secret society.
The defendants are Saheed Oyebode, 30; Benjamin Ocheme, 19; Godwin Nwapa, 44 and Lucky Oledinma, 59,
They are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, breach of peace and belonging to unlawful society, which they pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Insp. Evelyn Ehiemua, had told the court that the defendants and others at large, committed the offences on Jan. 3 at 8.30 p.m. at Agege in Lagos.
Ehiemua said that the defendants unlawfully assembled in a manner that threatened people and disturbed the public peace.
“The defendants also did take oath binding them to be a member of Aiye Confraternity,’’ she said.
She alleged that the defendants constituted a problem in the community as they always paraded themselves as cult members.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 411, 44 (1) and 168 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The Magistrate, Mrs A. O. Daudu, granted the defendants N50, 000 bail each with two surety each in like sum.
Daudu said the sureties should be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned until Feb. 10 for mention.
