Four children drowned in a 5-meter-deep dredging hole in Cambodia‘s southern Kandal province while searching for clams and snails, according to a provincial police report released Wednesday.

The accident happened late Tuesday afternoon in Ang Snuol district when they went into the water to search for clams and snails, police said, adding that the victims included two girls and two boys, aged 10 to 13. .

“After examining their bodies, the police concluded that they drowned,” the report says.

Drownings happen often in Cambodia, especially in rural areas. On November 12, three students, aged between 15 and 16, drowned in a lake while a wooden boat they were having fun on sank in the south-eastern province of Prey Veng.
According to the World Health Organization, there were 1,113 drowning deaths in the Southeast Asian nation in 2019. ■
