38 AKSU programmes get NUC accreditation – VC

Isaiah Eka, Professor Nse Essien, Vice Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), said on Thursday that the National Universities Commission (NUC) had approved full accreditation of 38 of its 42 programs academics. Essien, professor of sedimentology, revealed it at a press conference as part of the activities marking his first year in power. He said the three remaining unaccredited programs were new programs that were due to start in the 2020/2021 academic session in July, adding that students had already been admitted to the programs. The vice-chancellor said the 38 accredited university programs belong to the Faculty of Agriculture, Social Sciences, Management Studies, Art, Scientific Engineering and Science Education. He expressed optimism that the three remaining programs, namely: sociology and anthropology, biochemistry and banking and finance, would be accredited when the NUC team next visit in two weeks. “In total, we have around 38 academic programs. We just went from 38 to 42 academic programs. Faculty of Agriculture, Social Sciences, Management Studies, Art, Science Engineering and Science Education. “In the past year that we’ve been in the leadership saddle, we’ve launched three new programs and the programs are; Sociology and Anthropology, Department of Biochemistry and Department of Banking and Finance. “So these new programs will actually start in July, when the new academic session starts, i.e. the 2020/2021 academic session. “We have already admitted students and they will start normal academic activities. The programs will be based on the Obio Akpa campus, ”Essien said. The vice-chancellor added that in addition to the three new programs, the university has also started postgraduate studies in 67 programs. He said the postgraduate programs had received approval from the NUC and would span between PGD, M.SC, MPA, MBA and PhD. Essien added that the university also unbundled mass communication in the department of public relations, advertising, broadcasting and journalism and media studies. “This is our definitive plan to ensure that we are producing quality postgraduate programs to stifle the workspace in Nigeria and we also have DPI, Masters and PhD programs in Mass Communication. “We also unbundled mass communication, now it’s not mass communication anymore, but we have divided them into other departments. “In our university we have the departments of public relations, advertising, broadcasting and journalism and media studies,” he said. The vice-chancellor said that in order to make good use of the mass communication department, the university will launch its FM radio station AKSU in July. He said: “Very soon, in the next 30 days, we will be launching and going on the air with our AKSU FM radio, and the radio has received all clearances.” Essien said the university must integrate all visions of state government through their curricula and produce a workforce that would support the maritime and aviation industries and drive the process of industrialization.
