1 A Dei-Dei Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja on Thursday sentenced three scavengers to 10 months imprisonment each for destroying concrete pillars and stole the iron rods therein worth N1.5 million.
2 Besides, the Judge, Sulyman Ola, ordered the convicts to collectively pay N1.5 million as compensation to the complainant or serve 7 months imprisonment each in lieu of the compensation.
3 Ola, however, gave the convicts an option of N100,000 fine each.
4 The convicts, Musa Mohammed, 28, Abdulrazaq Ahamadu, 18, and Zaradeen Abdullahi, 25, all of Dawaki area in Abuja, were charged with joint act and theft.
5 The convicts pleaded guilty to the charge and begged the court for leniency.
6 The judge warned them to desist from committing crime after serving their punishment.
7 Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr Chinedu Ogada told the court that the complainant Onyebuchi Nwodo, who also lives in Dawaki area of Abuja, reported the matter at the Dawaki Police Station on Aug. 4.
Ogada said on Aug. 4, the convicts and others now at large, criminally went into the complainant’s site under construction at Dawaki and destroyed his concrete pillars on the site and stole the iron rods therein.
8 He said that the convicts intentionally destroyed the complainant’s pillars and stole all the iron rods worth 1.5 million.
9 The prosecutor said that the convicts were caught and handed over to the police.
10 He said that during police investigation, the convicts confessed that they committed the offence at night.
11 He said the offence contravened Sections 79 and 288 of the Penal Code. (www.
