UBS Rescues Troubled Credit Suisse in Government-Backed Deal
Swiss rival UBS has rescued troubled bank Credit Suisse in a government-backed deal. Emergency talks were held over the weekend between the two banks and Switzerland's financial regulators. The Swiss National Bank has confirmed that this deal was the best way to restore the confidence of financial markets and to manage risks to the economy. Credit Suisse shareholders will receive one share in UBS for every 22.48 shares they own under the $3.15bn (£2.6bn) deal. On Friday, Credit Suisse was valued at around $8bn (£6.5bn).
Regulator Action Zips Up Rescue Deal before Market OpenRegulators in Switzerland sought to secure a solution before financial markets opened on Monday. The Swiss central bank stated that a solution had been found "to secure financial stability and protect the Swiss economy in this exceptional situation." It has also offered liquidity assistance of up to $110bn (£90bn). Global financial institutions swiftly praised the deal, with Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank, welcoming the "swift action" of the Swiss authorities.
EU, US and UK Authorities in Support of Deal to Calm NervesCredit Suisse's failure is the latest in a crisis of confidence that has already seen the collapse of two mid-sized US banks and an emergency industry whip-round for another. The financial authorities in the EU, US, and UK all support the deal, stressing the strength of the banking system and safety of people's savings and deposits. The market opening on Monday will test whether this Swiss rescue has calmed nerves in the financial world.
UBS to Keep “Very Fine Asset” but Shut Investment Banking Part of Credit SuisseUBS Chairman, Colm Kelleher, said Credit Suisse was a "very fine asset we are determined to keep." He added that while the deal was attractive for UBS shareholders, it was an "emergency rescue" for Credit Suisse. UBS would run down the investment banking part of Credit Suisse, but Kelleher stated that it was "too early" to say what would happen about jobs. Credit Suisse is a loss-making bank that has faced numerous difficulties in recent years, including money laundering charges.

Barcelona and Real Madrid will meet for their fourth El Clasico of the campaign this Sunday in eastern Spain. Barcelona are already ahead by nine points in the league, making this, essentially Madrid's last stand. Xavi's men can still win the league with a loss in the match, but a victory at the Spotify Camp Nou can grow their advantage to 12 points, dealing a hammer blow to Real Madrid in the title race adding weight to an occasion that has lost some of its fire over the years.
While El Clasico is a rivalry on the pitch that has produced every type of memorably moment a grudge match could want, Barcelona's recent refereeing scandal has started a new chapter between the clubs. Recently, a rivalry that had once be defined by the games two best players, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, going head-to-head, had become somewhat less heated. In some ways, the two teams had even found themselves as unlikely allies against the rest of football, supporting the breakaway European Super League together. That's all over now.
Corruption charges have been filed by prosecutors against ex-Barca presidents due to payments made to a company owned by referee Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira. While Barcelona denies any wrongdoing due to these payments, the belief is that the payments were for Barcelona to receive preferential treatment and referee assignments, something which Real Madrid has spoken up about.
"Real Madrid expresses its deep concern about the seriousness of the facts and reiterates its full confidence in the action of justice and has agreed that, in defense of its legitimate interests, it will appear in the procedure as soon as the judge opens it to the parties harmed." Real Madrid said in a club statement.
While Real Madrid weren't included in the initial statement from La Liga clubs and even were involved with Barcelona in the quest to form a European Super League, the charges going to court has seen Los Blancos begin to distance themselves from Barca. While it may not show on the pitch during this edition of El Clasico, it s something that could have further implications down the line.
The statement was released after Real Madrid president Florentino Perez held an emergency board meeting to determine Real Madrid's response as fans had already turned against Barcelona, protesting during the Copa Del Rey semifinal.
Barcelona still maintains their innocence but that alone won't be enough to smooth their relationship with Real Madrid. With another clash between the two teams to go, with the second leg of their Copa Del Rey semifinal on tap, this won't be cooling down anytime soon.

Premier League leaders Arsenal opened up an eight-point gap on second-placed Manchester City with a 4-1 win over manager-less Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Palace sacked manager Patrick Vieira on Thursday after a 12-match winless run, and interim boss Paddy McCarthy could not end their poor form as Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka scored in the first half before Granit Xhaka furthered Mikel Arteta's side's lead early in the second. Palace failed to capitalise on Jeffrey Schlupp's 63rd-minute goal and Saka scored again to make sure of victory late on.
"Really pleased with the performance, the energy, the determination that we showed again, the way we controlled the game," Arteta told Sky Sports. "It was tough after playing 120 minutes in the week, wondering how the team would react but they reacted brilliantly and the crowd was at it again."
Martinelli opened the scoring on 28 minutes after he was found by Saka's searching pass. The Brazil international evaded Joel Ward and sent an effort into the far corner, beyond Joe Whitworth.
"Very happy, we needed that win and, as I always say, we approach the games as a final and we did that today," Martinelli said.
Saka's assist meant the 21-year-old became the first Premier League player to hit double figures in both goals and assists this season.
He doubled the league leaders' advantage on 43 minutes with a simple finish into the bottom corner after being played in down the right by Ben White.
Xhaka's goal 10 minutes after half-time was Arsenal's 13th in their last four league matches. Leandro Trossard, who provided a hat trick of assists in Arsenal's 3-0 win over Fulham last week, was provider again as he slipped through Xhaka to bundle in at the near post.
Schlupp threw Palace a lifeline on 63 minutes as he forced the ball home after Arsenal failed to deal with a corner, but the away side failed to mount a comeback as they slumped to their fourth straight defeat.
Arteta's side made sure there was no way back for Palace as Saka fired home first-time from Kieran Tierney's cross to score his 12th league goal of the season in the 74th minute.
"Even when we went down we were able to create in moments. But this is high-quality opposition," interim Palace boss McCarthy said. "They are top for a reason. I can't fault the lads' effort.
"They are a good group and they have to believe in themselves. Whatever happens, this group has more than enough."
Palace remain 12th in the Premier League table but are just four points ahead of bottom side Southampton.

Sheffield United secured their place in the FA Cup semi-finals after coming from behind to defeat fellow Championship team Blackburn Rovers with a 3-2 victory on Sunday. However, they will be without on-loan Manchester City players Tommy Doyle and James McAtee as they are ineligible to play against their parent club at Wembley.
Before the semi-final draw was announced, Paul Heckingbottom, the manager of Sheffield United, expressed his hope that they would avoid Manchester City so that Doyle and McAtee could play for the Blades. His wish was not granted as they were drawn to face the Premier League leaders in the next round. Heckingbottom stated that this would complicate things, but he and his team are still looking forward to the match against City.
Manchester City defeated Burnley 4-0 in their quarter-final match, thanks to Erling Haaland's sixth hat-trick of the season. On the other hand, Brighton convincingly beat League Two's Grimsby Town with a resounding 5-0 victory to secure their place in the semi-finals.
The semi-final matches of the FA Cup will be played on the weekend of April 22 and 23. Manchester City will face Sheffield United in one game, while Brighton will take on Manchester United in the other.

Manchester City's run of success in the FA Cup continued as they progressed to the semi-finals for the sixth time in seven years with a dominant 6-0 victory over Burnley.
Meanwhile, Sheffield United sealed their place in the last four with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Blackburn Rovers at Bramall Lane.
City loanees Tommy Doyle and Jamie McAtee both played for United in the win over Rovers, with Doyle scoring the decisive goal in stoppage time. However, the pair will be ineligible to play in the semi-final due to a rule which prohibits loan players from playing against their parent club in the competition.
Manchester City have played Sheffield United six times in the FA Cup, losing every match. The first encounter was in 1906, which saw City on the receiving end of a 4-1 defeat. Subsequently, in 1914, the teams played twice, both matches ending 0-0. Sheffield United won the replay 1-0. United then knocked City out in 1939 with another 2-0 win at Bramall Lane. In 2008, the Blues were defeated 2-1 in the infamous 'Balloongate' match when the hosts scored a goal that flew through a goal-mouth full of balloons released by the visiting City fans.
The winner between Manchester United and Fulham will face Brighton in the other FA Cup semi-final. The winner of the City-United clash will play them at Wembley Stadium across the weekend of Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 April. The fixture date will be confirmed on mancity.com and the official app shortly after the draw is made. Ticket details will be announced in due course.

Liam Payne was sharply dressed while supporting close friend and former One Direction bandmate Louis Tomlinson this week. The reunion found Payne at the UK premiere of Tomlinson’s upcoming documentary, “All Of Those Voices,” which releases in U.S. theaters on March 22.
Payne hit the red carpet at London’s Cineworld Leicester Square on Thursday night in dapper style, arm-in-arm with girlfriend Kate Cassidy. The “Strip That Down” singer’s ensemble featured a black collared shirt and trousers, accented by a cream tuxedo jacket with two-toned lapels. His traditional ensemble was accessorized with a black velvet bow tie, as well as a gleaming gold watch with a red face for a slick pop of color.
Cassidy also coordinated with Payne for the occasion, wearing a black asymmetric minidress with a thin diamond necklace and glossy heeled knee-high boots.
When it came to shoes, Payne slipped on a pair of classic black penny loafers to finish his black-tie attire. His pair featured smooth leather uppers with rounded almond-shaped toes, as well as their traditional front straps. The style was finished with thin soles and short heels, giving the singer a subtle height boost for the occasion.
Payne’s shoe style is versatile and neutral. The “For You” singer often wears high and low-top sneakers in hues of black and white, hailing from brands including Nike, Vans, and Adidas. On the red carpet, he can also be seen in more formal leather and suede lace-up oxfords, brogues, loafers, and Chelsea boots. Payne has previously dipped his toes into design as well, launching several collaborative collections with Hugo from 2019-2020.

Jaquez Jr., who was a top recruit coming out of high school, said that he still remembers the feeling of stepping onto the Bruins' court for the first time. It was a dream come true for him and he knew that his parents played a significant role in making it happen. They had been instrumental in his development as a player and had sacrificed so much to provide him with opportunities to succeed.
For their parents, it's meant lots of time watching their children's games. They have often foregone personal pursuits or even work commitments to ensure they are there to support their children. Whether it's driving long distances to attend games or spending hours in the stands, these parents do not mind the inconvenience or sacrifice. They are proud to be there for their children and to witness their growth as athletes and individuals.
Keeping it all straight, he said, requires a lot of organization — including an Excel spreadsheet. Managing the logistics of attending games, practices, and tournaments can be challenging, especially for families with multiple children involved in different sports. Parents often have to coordinate schedules, transportation, meals, and lodging to ensure that everyone is where they need to be. The added pressure of ensuring that their children are well-rested and properly fueled only adds to the complexity. However, these parents are up for the challenge and find ways to make it work.
For Jaquez Jr. and many other young athletes, the support and encouragement of parents have been invaluable. It has not only helped them develop their athletic abilities but also instilled in them important values such as hard work, perseverance, and dedication. These values have translated beyond the playing field and have served them well in their personal and academic pursuits.
In conclusion, parental support plays a crucial role in the development of young athletes and their success. The dedication and sacrifice of parents have transformed sports participation beyond just a game or a recreational activity. It has become an avenue for cultivating crucial life skills, building character, and forging strong family bonds. As such, parents' unwavering commitment and support should be celebrated and appreciated.

The first time Manchester City and Burnley met in the FA Cup was in 1931. The United States was in The Great Depression and Duke Ellington was on the radio. Burnley won. Times have changed though, and Manchester City has won the last five FA Cup games against Burnley. They're looking to continue that trend as the FA Cup Quarterfinals kick off this weekend.
Southampton will host Tottenham Hotspur today in a David versus Goliath story. Tottenham is currently ranked fourth in the Premier League and is coming off a 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest. Like his former Alpine teammate Esteban Ocon in Bahrain, Alonso picked up a five-second penalty for being out of position at the start, lining up to the left of his second grid slot.
After a lengthy delay, the FIA stewards concluded one of Alonso's mechanics was touching the car before the five-second penalty window was up. Minutes after heading to the podium to pick up what would have been his 100th trophy in F1, Alonso was hit with an additional 10-second penalty, which dropped him to fourth behind Mercedes driver George Russell.
When asked about his first five-second penalty, which was the result of being left of his box by some margin, the Spaniard said he wasn't sure yet how he made the mistake. "I need to review obviously; I made a mistake" he explained before his second penalty was confirmed. "When they told me five seconds penalty, I said okay, I need to drive a little bit faster to make [up] those five seconds. But I need to review."
Alonso said he had to put in "qualifying laps" to try and bring home third. In the final laps, he was being put under pressure by Russell, because the Briton's Mercedes team was also expecting Alonso to be hit with another penalty and their gap was hovering around five seconds. "It is hard a grand prix but, those guys [in the team] they gave me power and I push all the way through, like qualifying laps. Red Bull's maybe a little bit out of reach, but the rest were behind so I'm happy for that."
The second penalty meant Alonso missed out on scoring his 100th podium, four days shy of the 20-year anniversary of his first podium in the 2003 Malaysian Grand Prix. Regardless of the late penalty, Alonso and Aston Martin confirmed their strong start of the season by keeping both Mercedes and Ferrari at bay on the track. Alonso said his start to 2023 was "probably unthinkable one month ago when we launched the car, but these guys they've made a fantastic car."
However, teammate Lance Stroll retired from the race after losing power on lap 18, causing the first and only safety car of the 50-lap race. Aston heads to the Australian Grand Prix third in the constructors' standings, six points behind Mercedes and nine points clear of Ferrari.
Russell: Mercedes F1's gains compared to Bahrain "incredibly satisfying"
Russell: Alonso's penalties in Saudi Arabian GP "too extreme"

Donald Trump is bracing for his most legally perilous week since he left the White House, with the Manhattan district attorney likely to bring criminal charges against him over his role in paying hush money to adult film star Stormy Daniels, as he huddled this weekend to strategize his legal and political responses. The former US president has posted in all-caps on his Truth Social platform that he expected to be “ARRESTED ON TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK” and called for his supporters to engage in protests – an ominous echo of his tweets urging protests in the lead-up to the January 6 US Capitol attack.
Trump’s post was nothing more than guesswork about when Alvin Bragg might bring charges, sources close to Trump said, after he saw media reporting that the district attorney’s office had contacted the US secret service about security in the event of an indictment. The grand jury in New York hearing evidence in the resurrected 2016 hush money case is now expected to hear from one more witness on Monday, making it unlikely that an arrest would come the following day because it could take additional hours to draft charging papers.
But the frenzied posts from Trump reflected his deep panic and anxiety over the imminence and likelihood of criminal charges, the sources said, not least because he is powerless to stop the district attorney’s office from moving forward with a case that will take the US into new legal territory as Trump revs up his 2024 campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.
Trump and his allies have suggested in recent days that an indictment in the hush money case could benefit him politically – the Republican base might see the years-old case as a genuine “witch-hunt” as he has claimed – but it is also true that Trump himself is deeply fearful of criminal charges.
Trump discussed the hush money case every day last week, and his advisers say they have run through various scenarios in the event of an indictment, including whether he would initially travel to New York for an arraignment, or appear remotely from his Mar-a-Lago resort. Trump’s legal team has separately focused on a defense strategy. The outside counsel – Joe Tacopina and Susan Necheles – have reasoned that a hush money case centered on campaign finance violations could be weak after a similar prosecution against Democratic senator John Edwards failed in 2012.
If the indictment alleges the hush money violated campaign finance laws, the Trump lawyers are expected to argue that it fails the “irrespective test” – that Trump would have paid Daniels irrespective of the 2016 campaign to avoid the embarrassment because he was already a public figure.
Trump may face an uphill struggle with those arguments, given the fact that having “mixed motives” to protect himself personally and to protect his campaign could leave him liable, and the timing of the payments suggests there was an urgency to pay the money before the end of the 2016 campaign. In response, the Trump legal team is expected to argue that because Daniels tried to sell her story about an affair with Trump in 2011, and she was told then to “leave Trump alone. Forget the story”, that proves her silence was desired long before Trump was running for president.
The investigation concerns $130,000 that Trump made to Daniels through his then-lawyer Michael Cohen in the final days of the 2016 campaign. Trump later reimbursed Cohen with $35,000 checks using his personal funds, and Cohen pleaded guilty in 2018 to federal charges involving the hush money. The district attorney’s case is likely to focus on how Trump and the Trump Organization handled the reimbursements. According to court filings in the federal case, the Trump Organization falsely recorded the payments as legal expenses, referencing a legal retainer with Cohen that did not exist.
The district attorney’s office has had at least seven top Trump aides and advisers testify before the grand jury in recent weeks, including Cohen, who testified for around two hours on Wednesday – his second appearance – and every juror was said to have asked a question, suggesting an engaged grand jury. That is a typical sign for prosecutors as they weigh potential charges, legal experts say, because it could indicate the grand jury found him to be a compelling witness – and a jury at an eventual trial might be similarly convinced.
