As St. Patrick's Day celebrations continue across the country, thousands have taken to the streets in Waterloo, Ontario. The sizeable gathering has the attention of local authorities who will be monitoring the situation closely.
While the party hasn't yet spilled out to become a full-blown street party, locals in the MacGregor Albert, Northdale, and Uptown neighbourhoods were prepared for the festivities that St. Patrick’s Day always brings. Police in Waterloo will be keeping a close eye on events as they unfold.
The morning rain that had threatened to put a damper on the festivities seems to be easing off in Waterloo, just in time to encourage revellers to head to the streets. Foot traffic is building on Marshall Street, which is typically a focal point of celebrations.
As students stream into Waterloo, they're focused not only on having a good time but also being safe. Some have experienced negative reactions from the community in previous years, and they're eager to avoid a repeat of those incidents.
“We’ve had some troubles in the past where we’ve taken a lot of the brunt for things that happen on the street. So this year we’re doing our part to make sure that we can assist bylaw and Waterloo regional police in making sure we can celebrate St. Pats in a fun way but also in a safe way,” one student told CTV News.
Although the street party hasn't started yet, parties are already underway at homes on Ezra Avenue and Marshall Street, with residents hoping to keep noise levels down to avoid drawing the attention of authorities.
With the rain expected to let up later in the day, students are watching the forecast and hopeful that they'll be able to break out the green and hit the streets. As one student put it, "It's honestly like a tradition now."
The police are maintaining a visible presence on Marshall Street, but as yet, there are no reports of street parties getting out of control.
As the celebrations get underway in Waterloo, local authorities are all too aware of the potential for things to get out of control. An overnight parking ban has been announced for Friday and Saturday night in the MacGregor Albert, Northdale, and Uptown neighbourhoods to help police maintain order.
While St. Patrick's Day celebrations are grabbing the headlines, there's plenty of other news being made across Canada, including the following stories:

The Boston Strangler’s first victim, Anna Slesers, was found dead on 14 June 1962. The 55-year-old had been killed with the belt from her own blue housecoat. In the months that followed, more women were found, apparently killed by the same perpetrator. By some counts, the person known as the Boston Strangler murdered 11 women; others place the number of his victims at 13 or 15.
Six decades after Slesers’s death, the story of the Boston Strangler remains in part shrouded in mystery. It is a dark, distressing true-crime saga, involving a controversial confession, breakthrough DNA evidence, and a pioneering journalist who first connected the deaths to one another. Boston Strangler, a new film on Hulu, features Keira Knightley as Loretta McLaughlin, the journalist in question, and explores her role in covering the story.
The killer’s next victim, 85-year-old Mary Mullen, was found on 28 June 1962. Per, The Boston Globe, which profiled each of the victims in 2002, two more women, 68-year-old Nina Nichols and 65-year-old Helen Blake, were found two days later, on 30 June; 75-year-old Ida Irga was found on 19 August, 67-year-old Jane Sullivan on 21 August, 20-year-old Sophie Clark on 5 December, 23-year-old Patricia Bissette on 31 December, 69-year-old Mary Brown on 6 March 1963, 23-year-old Beverly Samans on 6 May, 58-year-old Evelyn Corbin on 8 September, 23-year-old Joann Graff on 23 November, and 19-year-old Mary Sullivan on 4 January 1964. The women were found in their homes. Most of them died of strangulation; Mullen was found to have died of a heart attack, and Samans had been stabbed to death.
It was unclear, at first, whether all the killings had been perpetrated by the same person. “From June 1962 to January 1964, Boston and its suburbs had eleven somewhat similar stranglings,” The Atlantic wrote in 1964. “Police are not at all certain those stranglings were the work of one man; but until they catch the culprit and, if possible, obtain a confession, they cannot be positive. The unknown always holds a certain element of terror, and because so much about the Strangler is completely unknown, and because what is known is so bizarre, he has had a far-reaching effect on the city.”
For years, the Boston Strangler remained anonymous. Then, in 1965, a man confessed. Per CBS, Albert DeSalvo, a factory worker, was being held on unrelated charges at Bridgewater State Hospital, a facility for inmates deemed irresponsible for their actions due to mental health issues. The confession, however, did not supply enough evidence for DeSalvo to be charged with the murders. Per WNYC, he never faced charges in cases related to the Boston Strangler killings, and ultimately recanted his confession.
In 1967, DeSalvo was found guilty in another series of attacks—“armed robbery, assault, and sex offenses involving four women,” The New York Times reported at the time. He was sentenced to life in prison. His lawyer on that case was F Lee Bailey, the same attorney who later represented Patty Hearst and OJ Simpson. A Boston Globe article published in 1967 stated that Bailey, speaking on behalf of his client in court, “did not state directly that his client was the Boston Strangler, but he said the 13 homicides took place after DeSalvo was released from the Billerica House of Correction in the Spring of 1962.” Bailey referenced those killings in an attempt to convince the jury that DeSalvo could not be held responsible for his actions, at one point referring to them as “thirteen acts of homicide by a completely uncontrollable vegetable walking around in a human body.”
The question of whether DeSalvo really was the Boston Strangler lingered. It found some partial answers over the years. In 2001, as reflected in a New York Times article published at the time, DNA from the exhumed bodies of DeSalvo and Sullivan (the woman believed to have been the Boston Strangler’s final victim) suggested that DeSalvo had not murdered her. Those findings, however, were reversed in 2013. That year, per ABC News, more testing was performed, using DNA found on a water bottle discarded by DeSalvo’s nephew. DeSalvo was dead by then (he died in prison in 1973 after being stabbed to death in prison).
The initial tests “implicated [Albert] DeSalvo and excluded 99.9 percent of the male population,” according to the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), a branch of the US Department of Justice. This, per ABC, gave authorities justification to exhume DeSalvo’s body. They did so in July 2013 and procured a new DNA sample from one of his femur and three of his teeth. According to the NIJ, “DNA specialists calculated the odds that a white male other than DeSalvo contributed the crime scene evidence at one in 220 billion – leaving no doubt that DeSalvo had raped and murdered Mary Sullivan.”
The New York Times saluted the testing as “[bringing] an element of modern scientific proof to one murder in a case that seemed likely never to be solved.” The tests, however, said nothing of the other murders in the Boston Strangler case. “We don’t claim with certainty that Albert DeSalvo is a suspect in each of them,” District Attorney Daniel F Conley told The New York Times then. “But we do believe that we stand on the threshold of unprecedented certainty regarding Mary Sullivan’s murder.” Some have posited that more than one person could have been responsible for the Boston Strangler killings.
Loretta McLaughlin, the reporter portrayed by Keira Knightley in Hulu’s film, died in 2018 aged 90. According to a Boston Globe article published at the time of her death, McLaughlin said the fourth killing in the Boston stranglings had “galvanized [her] attention”, and left her wanting to write a series of articles about the murders. “An editor disputed the worth of a series on the four dead women, noting that they were ‘nobodies

Crime drama fans can seek Redemption on television tonight as the new series premieres on ITV, bringing a compelling tale of what happens when policing and the private lives of officers collide. The Hunger Games actress Paula Malcomson takes the lead as Detective Inspector Colette Cunningham, whose world is turned upside down by a call from the Garda in Dublin. The body of a young woman has been found and DI Cunningham is listed as the next of kin. That body turns out to be her missing daughter Kate, and the discovery makes her leave life at Merseyside Police and take the ferry to Ireland.
Filmed in Ireland, Redemption was produced by independent production company Tall Story Pictures, part of ITV Studios and producers of ITV drama The Bay. The project was co-produced by Metropolitan Films, one of Ireland’s leading film and television production companies. Catherine Oldfield, executive producer, said: “We really wanted Redemption to have a very distinct sense of place, just like The Bay, which I also work on. So, it felt really important to make the drama authentic, to use local crew and Irish actors. We were hugely blessed with our brilliant casting director, Louise Kiely, who did the casting for Normal People, so we’ve got the cream of Irish acting talent in the show, with some wonderful some new faces as well.”
Most of the scenes are shot in and around Ireland’s capital Dublin, with the famed Trinity College and the dockland area getting screen time. “I’ve never seen Dublin look better,” said Ms Oldfield. “I’ve been trying to make a show in Ireland for years, because I love the country, and I love Dublin in particular. I’d never managed it until now, so I was delighted to get this opportunity.” She described Dublin as looking like “a billion dollars on screen”. But she said the camera also sought out bits of the city not have necessarily seen before. “Of course, we’ve got the shots of places like beautiful Trinity College,” she said. “But we also go down on the docks, and to the warehouses, back streets and more industrial areas too.”
For Keith McErlean, who plays Patrick Fannon, shooting in the Irish city was a chance to catch up with family and friends, but also to make Dublin a star in its own right. “It was lovely to be back in Dublin and to be able to travel back to see my family on my days off, that was a luxury,” he said. “It was also great that our director John (Hayes) wanted to make Dublin a part of the show, to make it a really strong character in its own right. It’s got such a rich history and beautiful buildings, and when you put that on screen it looks fantastic.”
The first hour-long episode of Redemption kicks off on ITV on Friday, 17 March at 9pm, with remaining five being shown at the same time on subsequent Fridays and will also be available on ITVX.

Here are your evening Everton evening headlines on Friday, March 17.
"I just want to be happy playing football. Working with Lampard, and the great players Everton have got, is a great opportunity for me to do that. I'm excited to go there, show the fans what I can do, and help the club as much as I can."
Those were the words of Dele Alli when Everton officially announced his arrival in the early hours of February 1 of last year. It was a bold move by a club in transition. Frank Lampard had only just become Blues boss, there was no sporting director in place and a flurry of late January activity was intended to halt the slide towards a relegation fight.
Just like with Lampard, Dele’s time in the spotlight on Merseyside featured promising flashes but ended within a year. Unlike with the former boss who tried so hard to protect and support the deadline day signing in public, Dele is due back at Finch Farm and Everton, and Lampard’s replacement Sean Dyche will have a potentially expensive puzzle to solve this summer.
There was no initial transfer fee for Dele’s switch to Everton from Tottenham Hotspur but the deal could reach up to £40m if a host of clauses are met. Many of them seem unlikely but, having played 13 times for Everton, a further seven appearances would trigger a £10m payment to his former club. For a club attempting to drive a smarter recruitment strategy, financially constrained by its proximity to spending limits and desperate to continue to shed high-earners from its wage bill, Dele’s looming return from a loan spell at Turkish side Besiktas in the summer presents a conundrum that will need solving.
Joe Thomas has more, here.
Dele Alli is not the only midfielder set to pose Sean Dyche with a dilemma this summer.
Andre Gomes and Jean-Philippe Gbamin could both return to Everton following the conclusion of their respective loan spells. Both have had their careers with the Blues ruined by injury and, like Dele, are contracted until the end of next season.
They were each deemed surplus to requirements in the summer and eventually secured opportunities to play elsewhere. There could be a chance for them to impress their new manager, who said every player started with a clean slate upon his arrival. Yet their presence will be a difficult reminder of the past excess that has undermined Everton’s efforts to make progress.
Gomes, who signed for Everton from Barcelona, is enjoying a positive season with French side Lille. The 29-year-old has played 19 times, scoring once, and started recent games with Lyon, Paris Saint-Germain, Lens and Brest. One French publication described him as "the perfect relay between the defenders and the Lille attack" and suggested he could be the subject of efforts to make his move permanent should Lille qualify for Europe. The side is currently sixth, one place and one point below Rennes, the team that occupies the final European qualification spot.

The last person anyone expected to see at an Arsenal match is Kim Kardashian. The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star was spotted at The Emirates on Thursday night for their Europa League clash with Sporting Lisbon.
Kim was cheering on the Gunners from the stands along with her son Saint West, who is surprisingly a major fan of the Premier League side. Embracing the cold London temperatures, Kim and Saint watched as Arsenal drew 1-1 with the Portuguese side before crashing out of the competition with a defeat on penalties.
So why exactly was Kim at the Arsenal game? Kim was said to be filming a secret documentary, but the premise of the project is yet to be disclosed. Ahead of the game, Kim took to her Instagram Stories to share snaps of an official programme alongside a massive collection of Prime energy drink bottles – the official sponsor of the Gunners. The star simply captioned the photo, "Send help," followed by a red SOS emoji.
Kim revealed her son's love for Arsenal when she shared an Instagram post from her daughter Chicago West's birthday party in January this year. Saint, seven, was seen proudly wearing his Gunners strip while posing with his mum - and fans were quick to point it out. Commenting on Kim's Instagram post, which has more than 2 million likes, one person wrote: "Omg Arsenal supporter," adding a praise hands emoji.
It's not the first time Kim has had a run-in with Arsenal fans - and she was jokingly mocked for a ridiculous reason. Back in May 2019, Arsenal supporters were trying to get Kim to help resolve the Henrikh Mkhitaryan's Europa League final row. Mkhitaryan did not travel with the squad to Baku for the final against Chelsea because his safety couldn't be guaranteed due to political tensions stretching back three decades between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Gunners fans were exploring every possible option and tried to get Kim to help her fellow Armenian. One user tweeted: "Hi Kim, not sure if this message will find you but, if it does, do you think you could help support Armenia’s football captain? He’s had to pull out of a final because he’s Armenian. Is there a way you could help Henrikh? Thanks." Another asked: "Did u aware your brother from armenia @HenrikhMkh won't be playing in europa league final because of old history of war between armenia and Azerbaijan (baku) and the world is silent. Peace to the world."

Bolton Wanderers will aim to end Sheffield Wednesday’s unbeaten 22-match run in League One. Wanderers still have promotion hopes of their own via the play-offs and sit sixth in the table going into their last league game before the Easter weekend.
Wednesday will pay tribute to former captain and club legend Don Megson - father of former Wanderers' manager Gary - ahead of tonight's game.
Ian Evatt, the Bolton Wanderers manager, said that the team’s underdog status means that they have nothing to lose. He hopes that his team can win the first goal and capitalise on the few and far between moments. He also described the playing style of both sides and looks forward to a good game. The atmosphere will be electric, and he hopes to capture this energy for the team.
The Wanderers duo of MJ Willims and George Johnston are working their way back to full fitness. Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Jack Iredale remain the Whites’ only long-term absentees. Wednesday will be missing some players due to injury, suspension and other reasons.
Wanderers have not won in their last four games with one draw and two losses in the last three games. They are presently occupying the final play-off berth with six wins in their last 10 league games. Wednesday is unbeaten in their last 22 league games and has won their last five games, including three successive 1-0 wins.
Wanderers will be having top-six meetings with Ipswich and Morecambe in March, followed by a match with Portsmouth. Bolton will return to League One action under the guidance of Ian Evatt for the 150th time.

Sheffield Wednesday are back on home soil tonight, with Bolton Wanderers the visitors to Hillsborough. Darren Moore's side are in scintillating form right now and have not been beaten in League One since October. It is a scarcely-believable run that stretches to 22 league outings.
If they avoid defeat this evening then it would mark half of a league campaign since they were last beaten. Wednesday have been strong on their own turf and have not lost at S6 in 14 matches.
Bolton arrive in S6 in mixed form, with just one win in their last five league matches. Stay tuned to our blog below for regular updates with no need to refresh the page.
It finishes all square. Not a bad point for the Owls. They lost their way after the opening 20 minutes. 23 league matches unbeaten now. Bannan is named the sponsor's man of the match. There's still time for a late winner.
Palmer shoots over when well-placed after a good cut back from FDB. We are all set up for a grand stand finish. It is pretty even. Wednesday only partially clear away a free kick and Jerome's rasping right foot volley goes over the top. Final Owls sub as Gregory is withdrawn for Adeniran.
Bolton are having a good spell of pressure right now. Wednesday have been second best in this half. Charles breaks through on the counter attack for Bolton and appeared to be impeded by Flint. A huge let off for the Owls. Huge round of applause from the home fans for Kieran Lee as he goes poff. Credit Bolton. Could have folded after going behind but they have shown bags of character.
Wednesday have lacked a clinical edge in attack. And Moore doesn't have any real attacking options left on the bench to call upon. Santos catches Johsnon late. The big defender goes into the book.
Vaulks sends a cross into the back post. Flints rises highest to meet it but can't test Trafford in the Bolton goal. A lovely through ball from Bannan to release Johnson down the left. His cross is too close to Trafford and the chance is gone. Windass limps off. Doesn't look happy one bit. He is replaced by Smith. Windass is down receiving treatment from the Owls' medical team. Bannan dinks a left footed cross into the box but FDB steers his head well wide. Gregory tries his luck from an acute angle but Trafford is equal to it. Marvin Johnson replaces Reece James at left wing back. They will be attacking the Kop in the second half.
Four minutes added on. Wednesday have had their chances but not taken them. They have let Bolton off the hook. Adeboyejo sends a shot past Dawson with the aid of a deflection off Flint after a good raid down the right by Jones. Bolton have carried a threat on the counter attack. Caught the Owls napping there. Important header away by Famewo in the six-yard box after a dangerous cross from the left. Corner to Bolton. Ref blows for a free kick to Wednesday. The hosts can breathe again.
Flint's downward header from Bannan's corner is gathered by Trafford. Bolton have regrouped after a tough 10 minutes or so. But the Owls have been well-organised and disciplined with their defensive shape so far. They just look a well-oiled machine. More Owls pressure as Vaulks forces Trafford into action. Wednesday are knocking at the door. Feels like a matter of time before they score a second. 'We're Sheffield Wednesday, we're top of the league' chant the home fans. They certainly are. After a slow start, the Owls are in control. James sends a deep cross into the back post. Flint knocks the ball down into the path and Gregory's shot takes a wicked deflection and goes in.

The actor Sam Neill has revealed that he is being treated for stage-three blood cancer in a candid memoir to be released on Tuesday. In an interview with the Guardian about his book, Did I Ever Tell You This?, the 75-year-old Jurassic Park star discusses his career in film and television, the nature of celebrity, life on his New Zealand farm, and mortality, having opened his book with a shock.
Neill started writing vignettes from his life as a way to keep busy – and as a salve – while undergoing treatment last year. “I never had any intention to write a book. But as I went on and kept writing, I realised it was actually sort of giving me a reason to live and I would go to bed thinking, ‘I’ll write about that tomorrow … that will entertain me.’ And so it was a lifesaver really, because I couldn’t have gone through that with nothing to do, you know.”
In Did I Ever Tell You This? – with its cover line endorsements from the likes of Meryl Streep, Laura Dern and Stephen Fry – Neill reveals himself to be an enormously good raconteur with a collection of stories that take the reader from his first seven years in Ireland to growing up in New Zealand and the eccentricities of his family life, through funny coming of age stories and amusing anecdotes from film sets over the years (co-stars behaving badly, take note). He said his book is not a cancer memoir, that rather his illness forms a “spiral thread” throughout the narrative.
Neill first experienced swollen glands during publicity for Jurassic World Dominion in March last year and was soon diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma. He received chemotherapy, but when that started to fail, he embarked on a new chemotherapy drug which he will continue to receive monthly for the rest of his life, although he is now cancer-free.
“I can’t pretend that the last year hasn’t had its dark moments,” he said. “But those dark moments throw the light into sharp relief, you know, and have made me grateful for every day and immensely grateful for all my friends. Just pleased to be alive.”
Neill, whose acting career began in the 1970s and is comprised of over 150 roles from My Brilliant Career to The Piano to Jurassic Park to Peaky Blinders, is currently in preparation to start filming on the television adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s bestselling novel Apples Never Fall, being filmed in Australia and co-starring Annette Bening.
