have yet to truly threaten the hosts goal 7th min Karim Benzema has the first shot on target of the match for either side but he misfires and sends it high and wide He was on target in his pre match warmups and Athletic Club are a club he loves to score against so that s a rare whiff 4th min Athletic Club aren t pressing incredibly high but Real Madrid are passing it around the back and coaxing the hosts out of their shell They oblige and it results in a few turnovers in dangerous positions but nothing comes of it yet Kickoff The game is under way Lots of pressure on Real Madrid to perform in this road match given Barcelona s result earlier 6 mins to kick Karim Benzema pinging top bins in warmups probably isn t what Athletic Club will want to see Athletic Club are one of his favorite teams to score against The only players with more league goals against them are Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi 15 mins to kick The players are out of the tunnel for one last warmup before kickoff The fans are still filtering into the stadium but it should be a rowdy atmosphere once the game begins 30 mins to kick Barcelona wins 1 0 on an early goal by Pedri increasing the gap at the top of the table to six points Real Madrid must win today or fall further back in the race 45 mins to kick Eduardo Camavinga is seeing a run in the side thanks to Aurelien Tchouameni s injury and Carlo Ancelotti has called him untouchable in the transfer market despite rumours of a move to Arsenal on loan It would be silly for Madrid to let him go at this point given their current squad makeup He s a necessary piece of that puzzle 70 mins to kick The Athletic Club lineup is in and head coach Ernesto Valverde has made a change up front The club has managed just one goal in their last three league games so regular striker Gorka Guruzeta sits as does backup Raul Garcia moving Inaki Williams back into the central striker role after a recent run out on the wing They are also starting a pair of backup centre backs due to injury and suspension 90 mins to kick It s packed outside San Mames Barria Stadium The Athletic fans are buzzing this is a match that can reignite their charge up the table after their good early season form has fizzled a bit 75 mins to kick The Real Madrid lineup is already out and it is exactly as we had thought Toni Kroos is sat on the bench with Dani Ceballos in the XI after his positive introduction midweek The only surprise is the inclusion of Marco Asension who replaces Luka Modric The aging duo has felt the weight of the long season recently There are only eight players on the Real Madrid bench compared to Athletic s 12 so Los Blancos are a bit shorthanded 120 mins to kick Aurelien Tchouameni remains absent due to injury but the young French midfielder still made his way into the news this weekend after he was spotted at an NBA game in France at the exact time Real Madrid was on the field against Villarreal in the Copa del Rey It was a bad look for the young midfielder who while injured would still have been expected to support his team Carlo Ancelotti addressed the issue during his pre match press conference and said that he received an apology from Tchouameni which he accepted bringing an end to the story at least internally Ancelotti backed Tchouameni after the incident saying he s a young boy who learned his lesson Athletic Club have a relatively healthy squad but there s an issue at centre back in this match with both regular starters missing An injury to Inigo Martinez has seen 23 year old Daniel Vivian forced into action since the World Cup break Now Martinez s regular partner Yeray Alvarez will miss this match as well due to yellow card suspension meaning 22 year old Aitor Paredes takes over at the other spot Head coach Ernesto Valverde has reacted to the club s recent scoring drought making a change up front With just one goal in their last three league games regular striker Gorka Guruzeta has been sat alongside backup Raul Garcia moving Inaki Williams back into the central striker role after a recent run out on the wing That brings Alex Berenguer into the starting lineup for the first time in five league games Athletic Club confirmed starting lineup 4 2 3 1 Simon GK de Marcos Vivian Paredes Berchiche Zarraga Vesga Berenguer Sancet N Williams I Williams Athletic Club subs 12 Agrrezabala GK Morcillo Minain Guruzeta Garcia Leuke Vencedor Villalibre Capa R Garcia Herrera Balenziaga The biggest issue for Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti in this match is the continued absence of midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni who is missing for another few weeks with a calf injury Eduardo Camavinga will continue in his stead but the Frenchman has not been stellar in his deputy role Also missing are defenders David Alaba and Dani Carvajal the latter of whom gives Madrid a headache at right back Lucas Vazquez is missing with a sprained ankle seeing Marco Asensio step in with Federico Valverde dropping back into midfield Ancelotti has a decision to make in midfield as Toni Kroos is usually a lock to start every game but is suffering through extremely poor form and Dani Ceballos replaced him off the bench against Villarreal to great effect last time out The German sees a night off here to give the hot hand in Ceballos a chance while the aging Luka Modric also sits Eden Hazard picked up an injury in training and was not included in the squad Real Madrid confirmed starting lineup 4 3 3 Courtois GK Fernandez Militao Rudiger Mendy Valverde Camavinga Ceballos Asensio Benzema Vinicius Jr Real Madrid subs 8 Lunin GK Lopez Vallejo Kroos Modric Odorizola Rodrygo Diaz Odds via BetMGM USA Sports Interaction Canada and SkyBet UK Interestingly Real Madrid are far from heavy favorites as they travel to the eighth placed team in the La Liga table Los Blancos are plus odds to win this match with Athletic Club s moneyline very close behind The expectation for goals in this game is muted given Athletic s excellent defensive record this year They have conceded 17 goals in 17 matches this season which is up there with the top defensive teams in the league behind the leaders Barcelona of course who have conceded just six times all league season blowing everyone else out of the water Credit https www sportingnews com us soccer news athletic bilbao real madrid live score updates highlights la liga teams to score against The only players with more league goals against them are Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi 15 mins to kick The players are out of the tunnel for one last warmup before kickoff The fans are still filtering into the stadium but it should be a rowdy atmosphere once the game begins 30 mins to kick Barcelona wins 1 0 on an early goal by Pedri increasing the gap at the top of the table to six points Real Madrid must win today or fall further back in the race 45 mins to kick Eduardo Camavinga is seeing a run in the side thanks to Aurelien Tchouameni s injury and Carlo Ancelotti has called him untouchable in the transfer market despite rumours of a move to Arsenal on loan It would be silly for Madrid to let him go at this point given their current squad makeup He s a necessary piece of that puzzle 70 mins to kick The Athletic Club lineup is in and head coach Ernesto Valverde has made a change up front The club has managed just one goal in their last three league games so regular striker Gorka Guruzeta sits as does backup Raul Garcia moving Inaki Williams back into the central striker role after a recent run out on the wing They are also starting a pair of backup centre backs due to injury and suspension 90 mins to kick It s packed outside San Mames Barria Stadium The Athletic fans are buzzing this is a match that can reignite their charge up the table after their good early season form has fizzled a bit 75 mins to kick The Real Madrid lineup is already out and it is exactly as we had thought Toni Kroos is sat on the bench with Dani Ceballos in the XI after his positive introduction midweek The only surprise is the inclusion of Marco Asension who replaces Luka Modric The aging duo has felt the weight of the long season recently There are only eight players on the Real Madrid bench compared to Athletic s 12 so Los Blancos are a bit shorthanded 120 mins to kick Aurelien Tchouameni remains absent due to injury but the young French midfielder still made his way into the news this weekend after he was spotted at an NBA game in France at the exact time Real Madrid was on the field against Villarreal in the Copa del Rey It was a bad look for the young midfielder who while injured would still have been expected to support his team Carlo Ancelotti addressed the issue during his pre match press conference and said that he received an apology from Tchouameni which he accepted bringing an end to the story at least internally Ancelotti backed Tchouameni after the incident saying he s a young boy who learned his lesson Athletic Club have a relatively healthy squad but there s an issue at centre back in this match with both regular starters missing An injury to Inigo Martinez has seen 23 year old Daniel Vivian forced into action since the World Cup break Now Martinez s regular partner Yeray Alvarez will miss this match as well due to yellow card suspension meaning 22 year old Aitor Paredes takes over at the other spot Head coach Ernesto Valverde has reacted to the club s recent scoring drought making a change up front With just one goal in their last three league games regular striker Gorka Guruzeta has been sat alongside backup Raul Garcia moving Inaki Williams back into the central striker role after a recent run out on the wing That brings Alex Berenguer into the starting lineup for the first time in five league games Athletic Club confirmed starting lineup 4 2 3 1 Simon GK de Marcos Vivian Paredes Berchiche Zarraga Vesga Berenguer Sancet N Williams I Williams Athletic Club subs 12 Agrrezabala GK Morcillo Minain Guruzeta Garcia Leuke Vencedor Villalibre Capa R Garcia Herrera Balenziaga The biggest issue for Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti in this match is the continued absence of midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni who is missing for another few weeks with a calf injury Eduardo Camavinga will continue in his stead but the Frenchman has not been stellar in his deputy role Also missing are defenders David Alaba and Dani Carvajal the latter of whom gives Madrid a headache at right back Lucas Vazquez is missing with a sprained ankle seeing Marco Asensio step in with Federico Valverde dropping back into midfield Ancelotti has a decision to make in midfield as Toni Kroos is usually a lock to start every game but is suffering through extremely poor form and Dani Ceballos replaced him off the bench against Villarreal to great effect last time out The German sees a night off here to give the hot hand in Ceballos a chance while the aging Luka Modric also sits Eden Hazard picked up an injury in training and was not included in the squad Real Madrid confirmed starting lineup 4 3 3 Courtois GK Fernandez Militao Rudiger Mendy Valverde Camavinga Ceballos Asensio Benzema Vinicius Jr Real Madrid subs 8 Lunin GK Lopez Vallejo Kroos Modric Odorizola Rodrygo Diaz Odds via BetMGM USA Sports Interaction Canada and SkyBet UK Interestingly Real Madrid are far from heavy favorites as they travel to the eighth placed team in the La Liga table Los Blancos are plus odds to win this match with Athletic Club s moneyline very close behind The expectation for goals in this game is muted given Athletic s excellent defensive record this year They have conceded 17 goals in 17 matches this season which is up there with the top defensive teams in the league behind the leaders Barcelona of course who have conceded just six times all league season blowing everyone else out of the water Credit https www sportingnews com us soccer news athletic bilbao real madrid live score updates highlights la liga Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos secure win, keep pace with Barcelona

Real Madrid secured a vital three points in the La Liga title race as they traveled to Athletic Club and snatched a 2-0 victory.

Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos provided the decisive blows, but the result was a team effort. It was far from a resounding victory, as Madrid remain somewhat off their usual pace and Athletic provided a worthy opposition, but ultimately the visitors emerged victorious thanks to a pair of glittering finishes that the hosts could not match.

Carlo Ancelotti rang the changes before the match, sitting out-of-form veterans Luka Modric and Kroos in favor of Dani Ceballos and Marco Asensio. Those alterations, plus faith in Eduardo Camavinga, proved vital as all aforementioned starters put forth quality performances. The finishes from Benzema and Kroos were highlight-reel moments, as both required significant body control to pick out the bouncing ball on the volley.

Benzema struck first, scoring just before the half-hour mark with an excellent finish despite his back to goal. It forced Athletic Club to chase the game, and they did just that, pouring on the pressure in the final 20 minutes of the match. At one point it seemed a miracle they couldn't find a deserved equaliser for their hard work.

Ultimately, however, Kroos came off the bench and found the goal to seal the result just as regulation came to a close. Real Madrid keep pace with Barcelona at the top of the La Liga table after the Blaugrana managed a drab 1-0 win over Girona earlier in the day.

For their performance, Athletic Club go home with nothing tangible to show for their defeat, but the hosts can be proud of their efforts. Nico Williams and his brother Inaki were both dangerous at times, but lacked the cutting edge finish.

The Sporting News will be following the match live and providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happen.

    Athletic Club (4-2-3-1, right to left): 1. Simon (GK) — 18. de Marcos (Lekue, 76'), 3. Vivian, 31. Paredes, 17. Berchiche — 19. Zarraga (Herrera, 68'), 6. Vesga — 7. Berenguer (Muniain, 68'), 8. Sancet (Guruzeta, 68'), 11. N. Williams — 9. I. Williams.

    Real Madrid (4-3-3, right to left): 1. Courtois (GK) — 6. N. Fernandez, 3. Militao, 22. Rudiger, 23. F. Mendy — 15. F. Valverde, 12. Camavinga, 19. Ceballos (Kroos, 85') — 11. Asensio (Modric, 73'), 9. Benzema, 20. Vinicius Jr (Rodrygo, 83').

Three minutes of added time are without eventful play and the match comes to an end. The Kroos goal put Athletic to the sword and they shut things down. It wasn't exactly brilliant stuff from Real Madrid, but they secure a massive three points to keep pace with Barcelona at the top of the Spanish league table.

Carlo Ancelotti made important changes to the starting lineup this match, and the changes Dani Ceballos, Marco Asensio, and Nacho Fernandez all made a huge difference. Then his substitutions ended up making a difference as well, as Kroos finds the back of the net on an assist from Rodrygo.

Athletic Club put in a great performance, but were unlucky to come away with points. That 90 minutes will provide them with confidence if nothing else tangible, as they were up to the task and just didn't have the finishing quality to match Real Madrid.

90th min: GOAL! REAL MADRID! How about that for a story, it's the struggling Toni Kroos who puts the game away! He's on the run trailing the play as Real Madrid break pressure, and he somehow contorts his body to strike a brilliantly precise hit while off balance trying to collect an off-target feed from Rodrygo. That's all three points wrapped up, on a goal that Kroos will hope springs him forward to get out of a rut!

85th min: Toni Kroos now comes on, replacing Dani Ceballos, who has covered an incredible 11 kilometres today on the field. An excellent performance. Will he earn more starting opportunities?

80th min: Chance, Athletic Club! It's absolute mayhem, and Athletic come close again! Thibaut Courtois is required to keep a very tight-angle delivery from going in! This is insane. Real Madrid under SO much pressure. How does Carlo Ancelotti respond to alleviate this? If he doesn't, the hosts will surely equalise...

Todo jogo do Real Madrid tem, pelo menos, um milagre do Courtois. Todo jogo!

Looks like Rodrygo set to come on shortly. The home fans are in full voice. Rodrygo comes on, replacing Vinicius Jr, who is spoken to by Ancelotti, who won't be happy with his winger for getting booked after he told him to calm down.

77th min: Chance, Athletic Club! The hosts have the ball in the back of the net, but it's disallowed! On a corner, it's cleared but only to Yuri Berchiche who rips on frame from the top of the penalty area. The shot takes a deflection, and nearly off-puts Thibaut Courtois, and while he eventually makes the save, Inaki Williams is there to slam it home! But NO! The flag goes up! It looks like the officials claim Gorka Guruzeta is off on the initial effort, both shielding Courtois and also providing a deflection.

Athletic are in the clear ascendancy now, and Real Madrid are hanging on by a thread. A few attacking moves have come close to producing something more dangerous. Inigo Lekue comes on for Athletic, Vinicius Jr is booked for a foul on him shortly after.

71st min: Vinicius Jr is whistled for a foul, and he's not happy with the call. He gets a stern talking to from Carlo Ancelotti who makes it clear he is the one to address the referee with issues, not his players. Vini put in his place by the Don. Luka Modric is being readied as a substitute, and he enters for Marco Asensio, which is surprising as it would have made sense to withdraw the booked Eduardo Camavinga instead.

Iker Muniain goes down dramatically under a challenge from Nacho Fernandez. It's a clear dive but the referee buys it. Athletic have done that a few times, if we're being honest.

70th min: Chance, Athletic Club! How has Nico Williams not scored there??? The ball drops to him with nobody in the same zip code, and somehow he misses the target completely! Antonio Rudiger lost his mark, but isn't made to pay. What a miss!

Athletic bring on a trio of substitutions, with Gorka Guruzeta, Ander Herrera, and Iker Muniain all into the match.

66th min: Chance, Real Madrid! Goodness, Marco Asensio came so close to doubling Real Madrid's lead! Karim Benzema slips Asensio through down the right edge of the six-yard box, but somehow he drags the shot wide across the face of goal. He will expect himself to score there, and it leaves the game still in the balance.

Athletic don't have the same incisive nature as they did in the first half. Substitutions should be imminent, and honestly it's a bit surprising they haven't already been introduced. Ernesto Valverde maybe a little slow to make changes.

62nd min: Athletic are screaming for a penalty but it's not given, and rightly so, as Eder Militao made a great tackle on Inaki Williams right on the end line that saw the Athletic man dramatically crumple to the turf.

Eduardo Camavinga gets a yellow for a tackle in midfield. It's a bit soft but definitely at least a foul. Always predictable, he'll need to improve his discipline as he matures.

58th min: Chance, Real Madrid! Daniel Vivian is the next Athletic player into the referee's book, as he chops down Ferland Mendy with a poor challenge that was quite unnecessary. On the restart, Vinicius Jr sends in a great ball and Karim Benzema pokes it to Nacho Fernandez, who has two bites of the apple. The first is blocked but the second is on frame, and Unai Simon makes a great save!

54th min: Vinicius Jr receives the ball in acres of space on the left flank and plays a bit of keepy-uppie until a passing option materialises. The commentators have a laugh, while the home fans do not appreciate that.

Moments later Antonio Rudiger muscles Inaki Williams to the ground chasing a long-ball, but the referee lets it go. The referee Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez has let a lot go today.

50th min: Athletic left-back Yuri Berchiche sees a bit of mist and basically punches Federico Valverde in the midsection before pushing him to the ground. The referee only gives a yellow and VAR doesn't give it a look, but he'll certainly want to reign that kind of play in moving forward.

48th min: Athletic Club have the first positive move of the second half as the two Williams brothers work well together and then a cross finds a streaking Alex Berenguer in front of goal, but Antonio Rudiger makes a critical tackle at the last moment, and then the offside flag correctly goes up.

Kickoff: The game resumes with no changes at halftime, which is no surprise as both teams had some positivity to build on in this second half.

A cagey first half overall, but both sides will be able to take positives from the 45 minutes.

Real Madrid controlled a lot of possession and took the sting out of the game for stretches, and Athletic Club proved bright when they managed to get on the ball. The two Williams brothers were positive and incisive when they managed to get possession in the attacking third, but had little support.

Karim Benzema provided the difference with a moment of absolute class, a fantastic goal to see Madrid in front at the break.

40th min: OUCH. Athletic left-back Yuri Berchiche is down needing treatment and cameras catch him sporting a badly dislocated finger on his right hand. That looks horribly painful, and you can see it on the veteran's face. Hopefully he can continue on if they pop it back in place. He looks to be ok once he reaches the touchline, speaking briefly with Carlo Ancelotti to tell the Real Madrid boss he's alright. A nice moment.

39th min: Athletic begin to ramp up the pressure in the attacking half, and win their fourth corner of the match. Again Real Madrid clear. Athletic have been energetic at times but cannot put it together on set pieces.

35th min: Athletic Club aren't attacking through the middle, mostly progressing down the flanks instead, so Eduardo Camavinga hasn't had a ton to do defensively, but in possession the young French midfielder has been quite good so far, in now his fourth consecutive start in league play. 19/21 passing, with both misses coming on long deliveries. Important possessional display early against the occasional Athletic press, which has proven energetic and pinpoint. He has also won three clearances.

You can't deny it, Camavinga is always there to lend a hand.

Eddie is magic under pressure. He hasn't got the Kroos/Modric level of decision making yet but the talent is there.

28th min: Federico Valverdo has a pop on goal from an extremely deep distance, and it's well wide. That's a poor decision, as he had room to run and teammates in support.

24th min: GOAL! REAL MADRID! Who else but Karim Benzema against his favorite opponent! Federico Valverde fires in a ball into the penalty area, and while the initial delivery was meant for Marco Asensio at the far post, it's cleared momentarily. It drops to Benzema who contorts his body exceptionally and rifles one that bulges the side netting with incredible skill. What a goal!

20th min: Now it's Real Madrid into the attack, and first Karim Benzema rifles a shot wide before Marco Asensio is felled at the edge of the penalty area by Yuri Berchiche. Madrid players scream for a penalty, and VAR has a look, but play is continued with no call. It's a dicey one for sure, and Berchiche will need to be careful, but there's probably not quite enough in that for VAR to overturn the call. Athletic get away with one!

17th min: Chance, Athletic Club! Nico Williams fires for the far post, having nutmegged Eduardo Camavinga, but he hits it just wide! Beat the goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois who was full stretch, but also beat the post.

12th min: Both sides starting to show more attacking intent. First Athletic play on the counter through Inaki Williams and win a corner but it comes to nothing. Then Vinicius Jr is flagged for offside on a Real Madrid through ball, and it looked like both he and Karim Benzema were off on the delivery. Athletic are starting to build themselves into the match but have been stunted a few times by silly fouls in midfield.

9th min: A few common occurrances for Real Madrid as Vinicius Jr, the league's most fouled player, gets hacked in midfield. Then Karim Benzema weaves his way effortlessly through a few players at the top corner of the penalty area but his feed to Marco Asensio sees the move shut off and Madrid have to recycle. They're comfortable on the ball now, but have yet to truly threaten the hosts' goal.

7th min: Karim Benzema has the first shot on target of the match for either side, but he misfires and sends it high and wide. He was on target in his pre-match warmups, and Athletic Club are a club he loves to score against, so that's a rare whiff!

4th min: Athletic Club aren't pressing incredibly high but Real Madrid are passing it around the back and coaxing the hosts out of their shell. They oblige, and it results in a few turnovers in dangerous positions, but nothing comes of it...yet.

Kickoff: The game is under way! Lots of pressure on Real Madrid to perform in this road match given Barcelona's result earlier.

6 mins to kick: Karim Benzema pinging top bins in warmups probably isn't what Athletic Club will want to see! Athletic Club are one of his favorite teams to score against. The only players with more league goals against them are Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi!

15 mins to kick: The players are out of the tunnel for one last warmup before kickoff. The fans are still filtering into the stadium, but it should be a rowdy atmosphere once the game begins.

30 mins to kick: Barcelona wins 1-0 on an early goal by Pedri, increasing the gap at the top of the table to six points. Real Madrid must win today or fall further back in the race.

45 mins to kick: Eduardo Camavinga is seeing a run in the side, thanks to Aurelien Tchouameni's injury, and Carlo Ancelotti has called him "untouchable" in the transfer market despite rumours of a move to Arsenal on loan. It would be silly for Madrid to let him go at this point given their current squad makeup. He's a necessary piece of that puzzle.

70 mins to kick: The Athletic Club lineup is in, and head coach Ernesto Valverde has made a change up front. The club has managed just one goal in their last three league games, so regular striker Gorka Guruzeta sits as does backup Raul Garcia, moving Inaki Williams back into the central striker role after a recent run out on the wing. They are also starting a pair of backup centre-backs due to injury and suspension.

90 mins to kick: It's packed outside San Mames Barria Stadium! The Athletic fans are buzzing, this is a match that can reignite their charge up the table after their good early-season form has fizzled a bit.

75 mins to kick: The Real Madrid lineup is already out, and it is exactly as we had thought. Toni Kroos is sat on the bench, with Dani Ceballos in the XI after his positive introduction midweek. The only surprise is the inclusion of Marco Asension, who replaces Luka Modric.

The aging duo has felt the weight of the long season recently. There are only eight players on the Real Madrid bench, compared to Athletic's 12, so Los Blancos are a bit shorthanded.

120 mins to kick: Aurelien Tchouameni remains absent due to injury, but the young French midfielder still made his way into the news this weekend after he was spotted at an NBA game in France at the exact time Real Madrid was on the field against Villarreal in the Copa del Rey. It was a bad look for the young midfielder, who while injured would still have been expected to support his team.

Carlo Ancelotti addressed the issue during his pre-match press conference, and said that he received an apology from Tchouameni which he accepted, bringing an end to the story, at least internally. Ancelotti backed Tchouameni after the incident, saying he's "a young boy" who learned his lesson.

Athletic Club have a relatively healthy squad, but there's an issue at centre-back in this match, with both regular starters missing. An injury to Inigo Martinez has seen 23-year-old Daniel Vivian forced into action since the World Cup break. Now, Martinez's regular partner Yeray Alvarez will miss this match as well due to yellow card suspension, meaning 22-year-old Aitor Paredes takes over at the other spot.

Head coach Ernesto Valverde has reacted to the club's recent scoring drought, making a change up front. With just one goal in their last three league games, regular striker Gorka Guruzeta has been sat alongside backup Raul Garcia, moving Inaki Williams back into the central striker role after a recent run out on the wing. That brings Alex Berenguer into the starting lineup for the first time in five league games.

Athletic Club confirmed starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Simon (GK) — de Marcos, Vivian, Paredes, Berchiche — Zarraga, Vesga — Berenguer, Sancet, N. Williams — I. Williams.

Athletic Club subs (12): Agrrezabala (GK), Morcillo, Minain, Guruzeta, Garcia, Leuke, Vencedor, Villalibre, Capa, R. Garcia, Herrera, Balenziaga.

The biggest issue for Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti in this match is the continued absence of midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni who is missing for another few weeks with a calf injury. Eduardo Camavinga will continue in his stead, but the Frenchman has not been stellar in his deputy role.

Also missing are defenders David Alaba and Dani Carvajal, the latter of whom gives Madrid a headache at right-back. Lucas Vazquez is missing with a sprained ankle, seeing Marco Asensio step in with Federico Valverde dropping back into midfield.

Ancelotti has a decision to make in midfield, as Toni Kroos is usually a lock to start every game but is suffering through extremely poor form, and Dani Ceballos replaced him off the bench against Villarreal to great effect last time out. The German sees a night off here to give the hot hand in Ceballos a chance, while the aging Luka Modric also sits. Eden Hazard picked up an injury in training and was not included in the squad.

Real Madrid confirmed starting lineup (4-3-3): Courtois (GK) — Fernandez, Militao, Rudiger, Mendy — Valverde, Camavinga, Ceballos — Asensio, Benzema, Vinicius Jr.

Real Madrid subs (8): Lunin (GK), Lopez, Vallejo, Kroos, Modric, Odorizola, Rodrygo, Diaz.

Odds via BetMGM (USA), Sports Interaction (Canada), and SkyBet (UK).

Interestingly, Real Madrid are far from heavy favorites as they travel to the eighth-placed team in the La Liga table. Los Blancos are plus-odds to win this match, with Athletic Club's moneyline very close behind.

The expectation for goals in this game is muted given Athletic's excellent defensive record this year. They have conceded 17 goals in 17 matches this season, which is up there with the top defensive teams in the league (behind the leaders Barcelona, of course, who have conceded just six times all league season, blowing everyone else out of the water).

Good morning! Three weeks until the Super Bowl, seven until Selection Sunday, 11 until the final round of the Masters.

Kansas City heads to its fifth straight AFC Championship after beating the Jaguars 27-20 yesterday, but not without major concerns for Patrick Mahomes. The MVP played almost the entire game despite an ankle injury.

Those teams meet today at 3 p.m. ET. Expect the game of the weekend.

And at 6:30, Dallas meets San Francisco. The Cowboys looked great last week, but how will they fare against the surging Brock Purdy experience? That winner will face Philly, which destroyed the Giants last night, 38-7. Let’s keep it a little closer today.

Is today the day the Premier League race really begins? Maybe!

Arsenal host Manchester United (11:30 a.m. ET, NBC) in a match with seismic implications.

Hopefully, the performances meet the moment. Follow the match on our live blog.

Two consecutive losses for the Jayhawks. They hardly ever lose at home — less than once per season in Bill Self’s 20 years. So it’s safe to call TCU’s 83-60 thumping of No. 2 KU surprising. The Horned Frogs took a 20-point lead in the first 10 minutes, en route to their first-ever win in the Phog. TCU’s trending upward under alumnus Jamie Dixon. Not just a football school!

Adonai Mitchell was a folk hero at Georgia, catching Playoff game-winning catches against Alabama last season and Ohio State this season. He’ll jump to the top of Texas’ weak wide receiver depth chart and get national attention, catching passes from either Quinn Ewers or Arch Manning.

A thrilling card in Rio ended with two new champions last night. Brandon Moreno concluded his four-fight rivalry with Deiveson Figueiredo, earning the flyweight championship after a stoppage. Indiana 82 Michigan State 69

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana defeated Michigan State on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 82-69 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.  It is the third straight win for the Hoosiers (13-6, 4-4).

The Hoosiers were led in the game by Trayce Jackson-Davis with 31 points and 15 rebounds.  Trey Galloway and Tamar Bates added 17 points apiece.

Indiana will next travel to Minnesota on Wednesday.

    1. Bates and Galloway shine, TJD figures it out.  Michigan State threw doubles, digs, traps and everything else at Trayce Jackson-Davis.  Meanwhile, freshman Jalen Hood-Schifino was struggling. Indiana needed others to step up and they got massive games from guards Tamar Bates and Trey Galloway, who scored 17 points apiece and made 8-of-9 threes.  Jackson-Davis was inefficient early with an 0-of-4 start but ended up with his second straight 30-point game.

    2. The defense responds.  Indiana opened the game like a team that wasn’t ready for a noon tip.  Michigan State made 7-of-11 shots in the first six minutes, and IU fell behind by nine.  But the Hoosiers held the Spartans to 16-of-42 shooting (38.1 percent) the rest of the way.

    3. Threes and frees.  For several years, poor 3-point and free throw shooting has been the downfall of IU basketball.  But on Sunday, those two areas made the difference.  The Hoosiers made an impressive 9-of-15 from three and 21-of-24 from the line to put away the Spartans.  Jackson-Davis is on a two game run of making 16-of-19 (84.2 percent) from the stripe.

IU beats Michigan State as Trayce Jackson-Davis puts exclamation point on 3rd win in a row

IU beats Michigan State as Trayce Jackson-Davis puts exclamation point on 3rd win in a row

Turgid offense prompted a couple pronounced first-half scoring droughts and allowed Michigan State (13-7, 5-4) to stretch a 25-16 lead in the opening half. Jalen Hood-Schifino and Trayce Jackson-Davis couldn’t find their range, and the movement around them slowed as a result.

It wouldn’t last, because Indiana’s best player wouldn’t let it. Jackson-Davis woke up from an 0-of-4 start to dominate the last 10-12 minutes. He attacked double teams, moved the ball for teammates and gave Tom Izzo’s coverages fits.

IU was 'somewhat dead in the water.'Then Trayce Jackson-Davis called players-only meeting.

Jackson-Davis finished the first half with 13 points, six rebounds and two blocks, setting a past not dissimilar to his dominant outing midweek in a win at Illinois.

Behind their star, the Hoosiers (13-6, 4-4) rallied from nine down to lead by five at the break. Jackson-Davis finished the game with 31 points, 15 rebounds, five blocks and four assists.

Michigan State didn’t make the mistakes Illinois did, the Spartans doubling Jackson-Davis early and pretty much every time he touched the ball near the post.

Indiana responded with some of its most-efficient offense on those possessions, moving bodies into shooting pockets and giving its All-American big man passing options. He was not so efficient as he was in Champaign, when he scored 35 points on 19 field goal attempts. But he still managed his share of assists, and the Hoosiers got offense from behind the arc as a result.

Trey Galloway and Tamar Bates benefitted in particular. They combined for 34 points and eight made 3s, their off-ball movement and Jackson-Davis’ added attention lending them substantial roles in Sunday’s game.

With the Spartans hellbent on not letting Jackson-Davis beat them singlehandedly, those contributions proved crucial.

They have not been the strength this season Mike Woodson would like them to be. At the start of play Sunday, the Hoosiers ranked outside the top 250 nationally in team percentage from the stripe.

Holding their nerve when the points came free made the final difference in this one. Indiana actually outscored Michigan State at the free-throw line, and was more consistent in hitting its shots there in general. Spartan runs ended with missed free throws, or were answered with makes from IU. Jackson-Davis closed the game with a pair of loud alley-oop dunks, finishing with 31 points, but free throws provided him the platform to close with that flourish.

Again, it hasn't always been a strength this season, but it was for 40 important minutes Sunday.

on the floor eating the other Sarah flees the house with the old lady chasing her and runs into Joel and his brother pulling up in their truck To Sarah s shock Joel bludgeons their frenzied neighbor with a wrench and they speed away Seeing the freeway blocked off by the military the trio cut through a field but end up in a town that has descended into chaos After their truck crashes Sarah has a broken ankle and she and her dad are separated from Tommy Amid the bodies on the street one of the Infected spots them and sprints their way With Sarah in his arms Joel runs to escape the manic creature As it gets closer a soldier shoots the infected human but then aims his assault rifle at Joel and Sarah After hearing a command from his radio the soldier apologizes and begins to fire at them but a surprise shot from Tommy takes down the soldier Unharmed and lying on the ground Joel turns to see that Sarah has been shot and in a heartbreaking scene his daughter dies in his arms Twenty years later we meet Joel in a military controlled zone in post apocalyptic Boston after the zombie like outbreak has destroyed human civilization The zone is controlled by FEDRA which enforces strict curfews and is looking to stamp out an anti authoritarian militia group called the Fireflies Joel is currently working odd jobs to make money including the disposal of infected bodies into a mass firepit We see him pick up the body of a child in the same manner he carried his daughter and throw it into the bonfire As another one of his jobs Joel smuggles opioids among other things into the restricted zone and sells them to FEDRA agents and civilians alike We also learn that his brother Tommy is missing somewhere outside of Boston and hasn t been heard from in weeks Elsewhere in a secret location a brazen teenage girl is being kept locked up and monitored in a room When Marlene the head of the Fireflies in Boston goes to see her we learn that the girl s name is Ellie and she is an incredibly important asset for the Fireflies to have and keep away from FEDRA Meanwhile Joel s partner Tess has been beaten up and abducted by someone who betrayed them by selling their car battery tunnels they stumble across a horrifying dead creature with an advanced form of the infection After breaking into a blocked off area Joel and Tess find a dead car battery along with a few people Coming in at a runtime of 55 minutes, the second installment will also shed light on the origins of the toxic outbreak.

The show will also feature new characters not featured in the original video game, including Melanie Lynskey as the revolutionary leader, Kathleen, as well as Elain Miles and Graham Greene as married survivors Florence and Marlon. The clip also teases the treacherous trek Joel, Tess, and Ellie take through abandoned Boston in the next episode, with some Infected crossing their paths. Plus, it gives a glimpse of the other threats that await them outside of zombie-like creatures.

Episode 1 of The Last of Us, titled “When You're Lost in the Darkness,” begins with an ominous prologue of a scientist on a 1960s talk show warning of a potentially disastrous fungal plague should the Earth get any warmer in the future. Flash forward to 2003 in Austin, Texas, and we meet young Sarah making breakfast for her dad, Joel, on the morning of his birthday before he heads off to work with his brother, Tommy. Later, she returns home after repairing her dad’s broken watch as a birthday gift and goes over to her neighbors’ house. Inside, we see a glimpse of the elderly, wheelchair-bound mother eerily twitching behind Sarah.

Later that night, Sarah wakes up to the sound of jets overhead and her dad out of the house. Trying to bring her neighbors’ spooked dog home, she wanders into their house to discover a gruesome scene of one neighbor dead and bloodied, with the elderly woman on the floor eating the other. Sarah flees the house with the old lady chasing her and runs into Joel and his brother pulling up in their truck. To Sarah’s shock, Joel bludgeons their frenzied neighbor with a wrench, and they speed away.

Seeing the freeway blocked off by the military, the trio cut through a field, but end up in a town that has descended into chaos. After their truck crashes, Sarah has a broken ankle and she and her dad are separated from Tommy. Amid the bodies on the street, one of the Infected spots them and sprints their way. With Sarah in his arms, Joel runs to escape the manic creature. As it gets closer, a soldier shoots the infected human but then aims his assault rifle at Joel and Sarah. After hearing a command from his radio, the soldier apologizes and begins to fire at them, but a surprise shot from Tommy takes down the soldier. Unharmed and lying on the ground, Joel turns to see that Sarah has been shot, and in a heartbreaking scene, his daughter dies in his arms.

Twenty years later, we meet Joel in a military-controlled zone in post-apocalyptic Boston, after the zombie-like outbreak has destroyed human civilization. The zone is controlled by FEDRA, which enforces strict curfews and is looking to stamp out an anti-authoritarian militia group called the Fireflies. Joel is currently working odd jobs to make money, including the disposal of infected bodies into a mass firepit. We see him pick up the body of a child in the same manner he carried his daughter and throw it into the bonfire. As another one of his jobs, Joel smuggles opioids, among other things, into the restricted zone, and sells them to FEDRA agents and civilians, alike. We also learn that his brother, Tommy, is missing somewhere outside of Boston and hasn’t been heard from in weeks.

Elsewhere in a secret location, a brazen teenage girl is being kept locked up and monitored in a room. When Marlene, the head of the Fireflies in Boston, goes to see her, we learn that the girl’s name is Ellie and she is an incredibly important asset for the Fireflies to have and keep away from FEDRA.

Meanwhile, Joel’s partner, Tess, has been beaten up and abducted by someone who betrayed them by selling their car battery, but a bomb goes off by the building and she escapes. When she returns home to Joel, they decide to go after the traitor and retrieve their stolen car battery. Traveling through the off-limits subway tunnels, they stumble across a horrifying dead creature with an advanced form of the infection. After breaking into a blocked-off area, Joel and Tess find a dead car battery, along with a few people freshly dead on the ground. They run into Marlene, another member of the Fireflies, and Ellie, who runs at Joel with a knife, which he kicks aside. With her original plans gone astray, Marlene tells Joel and Tess that in exchange for transporting Ellie safely to a Fireflies outpost, she’ll give them a running truck, which Joel is seemingly going to use to find his brother. Tess and Joel agree to the job.

Beginning their escape at night, Tess and Joel lead Ellie through a secret tunnel they’ve dug for smuggling. While avoiding being caught, they run into a FEDRA agent outside of his post. He commands them to stay still while he holds up a device to each of them to test if they’re infected, but when he gets to Ellie, she attacks him with her knife. With the agent’s weapon now pointing at Ellie, instinct takes over Joel and he beats the soldier to a bloody pulp. Tess then alerts Joel that the device shows Ellie tested positive for the infection. However, Ellie insists she was bitten weeks ago, while people typically succumb to the infection and change within a day. With the military approaching, Joel and Tess flee with Ellie.

A series renewal hasn’t been announced yet, but there likely will be at least one more season of The Last of Us, given that showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have hinted about the future of the show. Plus, there is plenty of source material to adapt from the video game plot in The Last of Us Part I and Part II — with a Part III potentially on the way.

Coco Gauff backed for Grand Slam glory despite Melbourne heartbreak

Coco Gauff bowed out of the Australian Open at the fourth round on Sunday but her future remains bright.

Gauff cut a dejected figure after being blown away by Jelena Ostapenko but Tim Henman feels that she will bounce back.

Speaking on the Eurosport broadcast of Sunday’s action, Henman backed Gauff to win a Grand Slam in the future.

“There are definitely areas she can improve on but I see that as a positive. Wow, you’re this good and you’re only 18, and you’ve still got so many areas to improve on,” Henman said as quoted by Eurosport.

Former British No 1 Laura Robson is assured that Gauff will find a way to bounce back from the disappointment.

“You only need to look at how she finished last season,” said Robson.

“Losing a bunch of matches in a row and how she came out in 2023, winning Auckland straight away.

“I just love that she’s this open and it’s very similar to what we said about Iga [Swiatek], if she’s this open about it, she can improve on it. She fought until the last point but her serve let her down and at one point she was serving at 33% on second serve.

Seven-time Grand Slam winner Mats Wilander is concerned that Gauff’s game isn’t as rounded as it could be.

He said her emotional state had little bearing on what might happen in the future.

“Is it because she’s young, is it because she wants it so much? I’m not sure,” Wilander said.

“I like it in a way because it shows she cares… but I would be more concerned with her tennis than her emotional state, she needs to come up with a weapon against these girls that she can absolutely smack the ball.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo was handed a debut for Al Nassr against Ettifaq on Sunday as the veteran striker made his first Saudi Pro League appearance His debut for Al Nassr was delayed as 37 year old Ronaldo served a two match ban imposed by the English Football Association for an incident that saw him slap a phone from the hand of a young Everton supporter in a game at Goodison Park last season Ronaldo was handed the captain s armband having already featured for a Riyadh All Stars team scoring twice against Lionel Messi s Paris Saint Germain this week The striker from Madeira enjoyed a winning start as his Al Nassr side overcame a gritty Ettifaq in a game which started brightly but lost its spark as the contest unfolded Cristiano showed flashes but was well marshalled by the Commandos from Dammam Brazilian Talisca was the hero of the night though as it was his headed goal just past the half hour mark that secured maximum points for the home side that was enough for Rudi Garcia s men to recover top spot in the league With today s 1 0 win over Ettifaq Al Nassr return to the top of the Roshn Saudi League as they leapfrog both Al Hilal and Al Ittihad The next league game for Rudi Garcia s men will be on 3 February when they face Al Fateh away So what did we think about Ronaldo s debut today He certainly showed glimpses of what he can do and linked up well with Talisca and Pity Martinez Dying seconds of the game now as Ettifaq over hit a cross and surely thats it Just one shot on target all evening from Ettifaq which pretty much tells you all you need to know about the visitors who have been average Three minutes to be added Final minute of the contest and the second half has failed to match the high tempo first 45 that we enjoyed Cristiano looks comfortable now and has carved out some decent chances in this half Al Nassr will look to the win though and the three points that sees them leapfrog back to the top of the Saudi Pro League table Al Mosa Ettifaq carded for disagreeing rather vociferously about a referring decision Still time for Ettifaq to cause a shock here with just the Talisca header dividing the sides I m struggling to recall anything like a decent chance on goal from the side from Dammam as the clock ticks down CR7 nearly gets his goal as once again the Ettifaq keeper does well in denying the home side as he saves with his feet albeit from an acute angle Al Nassr are in Saudi Super Cup action next week as they face Al Ittihad in the semi final Their next league action is an away game against Al Fateh on 3 February Ettifaq seem to have managed to survive the wave of constant attack from Al Aalami as the clock ticks down How much the home fans would love to see a goal from Ronaldo The ball now being peppered on the Ettifaq goal What a shot from Talisca as the Brazilian is assisted by Ronaldo once again Ettifaq s best player of the night Paulo Victor saves well Great play from Al Nassr as Cr7 finds Pity Martinez and that s a fine volley from the Argentine as the keeper saves well Al Nassr really knocking on the door now Ettifaq win a dangerous free as Vitinho is upended Five in the Al Nassr wall as it s the Brazilian who strikes but that was poor Wide and nothing for Nawaf Al Aqidi to worry abouy Nice work from Cristiano as he works a nice one two and drives on goal but the ball strikes a man in green for a corner for Al Nassr The start to the second half pretty much sees us continue where we left off in the first 45 Al Nassr dominate the action as the Commanders look to strike with Vitinho and Quaison the outlets for Ettifaq The home side need that second goal to quell any nerves The noise levels from the first half seem to abated with a more serene atmosphere now The noise levels at spells in the first 45 were indeed impressive Ali Lajami takes an elbow to the ribs and needs medical attention The No 78 is back on his feet and seems okay to carry on Off we go Ettifaq start the second half The home side emerge and receive a warm round of applause Al Nassr will be back in action next Thursday as they face Al Ittihad in the semi final of the Saudi Super Cup As things stand the solitary goal from Talisca would be enough to propel Al Nassr back to the summit of the Saudi Pro League table So what to make of Cristiano s first 45 minutes of competitive football since representing Portugal at the 2022 Qatar World Cup The whistle sounds and that brings the end to the half and Cristiano Ronaldo s first 45 minutes of top flight Saudi Pro League action We ll have one minute of time to be added on It s been a half with plenty of endeavour from Ronaldo but Talisca is the player who has shone tonight with the Brazilian bagging the goal and good in distribution Half chance for Ettifaq as Vitinho blasts the ball into the side netting in a rare break forward for the side in green Less than ten minutes of the half remain and just the Talisca goal separate the sides Free for Al Nassr as Talisca is upended this is vintage CR7 territory is it current CR7 territory No poor from the striker as he gets the ball up well but it just fails to come down on time and easy for Victor to let go Fine header from the Brazilian latching on to the flighted ball as CR7 was unable to get his head onto the ball Despite their being a decent pace to the game neither keeper has been called into action yet with Ettifaq s Victor the more active of the two stoppers Talisca Martinez and CR7 are still yet to get on the same wavelength as play is held up as a collision forces the ref to halt the action Card for Mowalad Ettifaq for leading with studs showing Another big appeal from CR7 as the striker felt he was wrestled to the ground but once again the ref waves play on and Al Nassr have to settle for a corner The home side now very much on top Brazilian Talisca looked good in the exhibition game on Thursday with the striker bagging one of the finest goals of the nine all night Big appeal from the home fans as Ronaldo is robbed of the ball on the edge of the Ettifaq box unfairly for the Mrsool Park supporters but the ref waves play on Cristiano strikes and the ball is deflected behind for a corner by Tisserand First corner of the night for Al Nassr as Ettifaq clear behind for yet another corner kick Pity Martinez and CR7 just fail to connect as the ball runs through to Paulo Victor with the Brazilian one of Ettifaq s seven non Saudi players A hint of early game nerves maybe for the striker with great noise levels being generated by the home fans Flares now burn to give the atmosphere a Istanbul derby feel A huge Vamos tifo in yellow and blue greets the teams as the Saudi national anthem plays Face of intense concentration on Ronaldo as he wears the captains armband Al Nassr in their traditional yellow and blue with Ettifaq in green and white very much a Mexico kit vibe from the visitors CR7 leads the line as part of a 4 5 1 employed by French coach Rudi Garcia Just over ten minutes before the game gets underway Our pre match prediction favours a home win with the Knights of Najd boosted by Cristiano s presence with the Portuguese striker to find the target tonight We go for a 4 0 win sorry Ettifaq fans Just 2 points seperate Al Hilal at the summit and Al Nassr in third with The Blue Waves having played 15 games Al Ittihad on 14 with the 13 of Al Nassr Riyadh rivals Al Hilal have just beaten Abha FC 1 2 to go top of the Saudi Pro League ahead of the Al Nassr and Ettifaq which closes matchday 14 Patrice Careton names his side to face Al Nassr this evening with Velkovski and Mahnashi both ruled out through injury Vitinho will lead the line for the Commandos this evening So the news that many have been anxious to see Cristiano Ronaldo makes his Saudi Pro League debut for Al Nassr at Mrsool Park Talisca and Pity Martinez will accompany the Portuguese in the Al Nassr frontline with Nawaf Al Aqidi selected to replace the injured David Ospina Ettifaq s French manager Patrice Carteron returns to Mrsool Park where back in 2017 he was manager The 53 year old is something of a coaching globetrotter having overseen the likes of Al Ahly Mazembe Phoenix Rising and Raja Casablanca The Portuguese star has been unable to debut for his new team due to a FIFA ban after the player slapped a teenager s phone in a moment of frustration last April at Old Trafford He was hit with a 61 000 fine and a two game suspension which he has now served after missing the SPL games against Al Ta ee and Al Shabab Saudi Pro League regulations permit all top flight clubs to have seven non Saudi players as part of the first team squad Ronaldo is one of the seven with Colombian keeper David Ospina being the other high profile player Alvaro Gonzalez Spain The former Villarreal and Marseille man is a versatile centre back Pity Martinez Argentina Looking to redeem himself after a lacklustre spell with MLS side Atlanta United and recover the River Plate form that saw him an integral part of Gallardo s side Luis Gustavo Brazil Now 35 the veteran Brazilian is most known for his time with Bundesliga sides Bayern and Wolfsburg Cristiano s deal with the Roshn Saudi League side runs for two and a half years through to June 2025 with the player set to earn a total salary of 231m per year once commercial agreements are also included The deal is thought to be the highest salary ever paid to a professional footballer The home dressing room at the Mrsool Park stadium is ready with just less than 90 minutes to go to kick off in Riyadh with today s Roshn Saudi League generating huge levels of international interest with the game being shown live in the likes of Italy Portugal and Germany As the 2022 23 Roshn Saudi League heads towards the halfway mark of the season Al Nassr are well positioned to make an assault for the league title as they trail Nuno Espirito Santo s Al Ittihad by just one point having played a game less than the Jeddah based side All three major title contenders Al Ittihad Al Nassr and third placed Al Hilal have been beaten just once all season and it seems inevitable that one of the big three of Saudi football will claim the 22 23 title Thoughts now turn back to the domestic campaign as Al Nassr will look to maintain pressure of table toppers with Nuno Espirito Santo s Al Ittihad holding a one point lead over Al Nassr as the Riyadh knights face tenth placed Ettifaq Thursday night s game was possibly the last time we will see two recent greats of the game on the pitch for the last time as CR7 and Messi shared the pitch at the King Fahd Stadium After joining the Riyadh based side on 30 December last month this is the day that all Al Nassr fans have been waiting for as Cristiano Al Nassr

Cristiano Ronaldo was handed a debut for Al Nassr against Ettifaq on Sunday as the veteran striker made his first Saudi Pro League appearance.

His debut for Al Nassr was delayed as 37-year-old Ronaldo served a two-match ban imposed by the English Football Association for an incident that saw him slap a phone from the hand of a young Everton supporter in a game at Goodison Park last season.

Ronaldo was handed the captain's armband, having already featured for a Riyadh All-Stars team – scoring twice – against Lionel Messi's Paris Saint-Germain this week.

The striker from Madeira enjoyed a winning start as his Al Nassr side overcame a gritty Ettifaq in a game which started brightly but lost its spark as the contest unfolded.

Cristiano showed flashes but was well marshalled by the 'Commandos' from Dammam.

Brazilian Talisca was the hero of the night though as it was his headed goal just past the half hour mark that secured maximum points for the home side that was enough for Rudi Garcia's men to recover top spot in the league.

With today's 1-0 win over Ettifaq, Al Nassr return to the top of the Roshn Saudi League as they leapfrog both Al Hilal and Al Ittihad.

The next league game for Rudi Garcia's men will be on 3 February when they face Al Fateh away.

So what did we think about Ronaldo's debut today?

He certainly showed glimpses of what he can do and linked up well with Talisca and Pity Martinez.

Dying seconds of the game now as Ettifaq over hit a cross and surely thats it...

Just one shot on target all evening from Ettifaq which pretty much tells you all you need to know about the visitors who have been average!

    Three minutes to be added.

Final minute of the contest and the second half has failed to match the high tempo first 45 that we enjoyed.

Cristiano looks comfortable now and has carved out some decent chances in this half.

Al Nassr will look to the win though and the three points that sees them leapfrog back to the top of the Saudi Pro League table.

Al Mosa (Ettifaq) carded for disagreeing rather vociferously about a referring decision.

Still time for Ettifaq to cause a shock here with just the Talisca header dividing the sides.

I'm struggling to recall anything like a decent chance on goal from the side from Dammam as the clock ticks down.

CR7 nearly gets his goal as once again the Ettifaq keeper does well in denying the home side as he saves with his feet, albeit from an acute angle.

Al Nassr are in Saudi Super Cup action next week as they face Al Ittihad in the semi-final.

Their next league action is an away game against Al Fateh on 3 February.

Ettifaq seem to have managed to survive the wave of constant attack from Al-Aalami as the clock ticks down.

How much the home fans would love to see a goal from Ronaldo....

The ball now being peppered on the Ettifaq goal.

What a shot from Talisca as the Brazilian is assisted by Ronaldo ....once again Ettifaq's best player of the night, Paulo Victor saves well.

Great play from Al Nassr as Cr7 finds Pity Martinez and that's a fine volley from the Argentine as the keeper saves well.

Al Nassr really knocking on the door now.

Ettifaq win a dangerous free as Vitinho is upended. Five in the Al Nassr wall as it's the Brazilian who strikes but that was poor. Wide and nothing for Nawaf Al-Aqidi to worry abouy.

Nice work from Cristiano as he works a nice one-two and drives on goal but the ball strikes a man in green for a corner for Al Nassr.

The start to the second half pretty much sees us continue where we left off in the first 45.

The home side need that second goal to quell any nerves.

The noise levels from the first half seem to abated with a more serene atmosphere now. The noise levels at spells in the first 45 were indeed impressive.

Ali Lajami takes an elbow to the ribs and needs medical attention.

The No. 78 is back on his feet and seems okay to carry on.

Off we go. Ettifaq start the second half.

The home side emerge and receive a warm round of applause.

Al Nassr will be back in action next Thursday as they face Al Ittihad in the semi-final of the Saudi Super Cup.

As things stand, the solitary goal from Talisca would be enough to propel Al Nassr back to the summit of the Saudi Pro League table.

Card for Mowalad (Ettifaq) for leading with studs showing.

Another big appeal from CR7 as the striker felt he was wrestled to the ground but once again, the ref waves play on and Al Nassr have to settle for a corner.

The home side now very much on top.

Brazilian Talisca looked good in the exhibition game on Thursday with the striker bagging one of the finest goals of the nine all night.

Big appeal from the home fans as Ronaldo is robbed of the ball on the edge of the Ettifaq box (unfairly) for the Mrsool Park supporters but the ref waves play on.

Cristiano strikes and the ball is deflected behind for a corner by Tisserand.

First corner of the night for Al Nassr as Ettifaq clear behind for yet another corner kick.

Pity Martinez and CR7 just fail to connect as the ball runs through to Paulo Victor with the Brazilian one of Ettifaq's seven non-Saudi players.

A hint of early game nerves maybe for the striker with great noise levels being generated by the home fans.

Flares now burn to give the atmosphere a Istanbul derby feel !

A huge 'Vamos' tifo in yellow and blue greets the teams as the Saudi national anthem plays.

Face of intense concentration on Ronaldo as he wears the captains armband.

Al Nassr in their traditional yellow and blue with Ettifaq in green and white ...very much a Mexico kit vibe from the visitors.

Just over ten minutes before the game gets underway.

Patrice Careton names his side to face Al Nassr this evening with Velkovski and Mahnashi both ruled out through injury. Vitinho will lead the line for the 'Commandos' this evening.

Pity Martinez (Argentina) Looking to redeem himself after a lacklustre spell with MLS side Atlanta United and recover the River Plate form that saw him an integral part of Gallardo's side.
