Ten Hag believes Rashford has more to offer Man Utd
Source Credit: https://www.eurosport.com/football/premier-league/2022-2023/erik-ten-hag-admits-doubts-over-controversial-bruno-fernandes-goal-in-manchester-united-win-over-cit_sto9318889/story.shtml
Erik ten Hag was understandably delighted with his Manchester United side's 2-1 win over City in the derby.
The Reds came from behind, after conceding to Jack Grealish's header, to secure a priceless triumph in front of the passionate home fans at Old Trafford.
Bruno Fernandes equalised before Marcus Rashford finished Alejandro Garnacho's centre to send the place into delirium.
The boss spoke to the official broadcasters, including BT Sport, BBC and, of course, MUTV, after the game and gave his view on a memorable afternoon...
Erik ten Hag provides his immediate reaction to an incredible comeback victory at Old Trafford...
"The first half, we played very well. We defended very well and were proactive. We break quickly, with opportunities we create on the break, so I was really happy at half-time with that. We should be 1-0 up but wasn't. After half-time, we had to sub Anthony Martial because he had some complaints. It changed the game and we were not proactive any more. Just before I want to change, they score."
"If you are the opposition, I can see the team are unhappy with this situation but Bruno was scoring from the back and not in an offside position. Of course, he brings hesitation from the centre-halves, to the opposition, and we take advantage. It's a difficult situation. It's a grey area. But, when you see back the approach, Bruno was in an onside position and he scored. I can see on the other side - it confused the backline, it's clear but, also, that's the rule. I would not be happy when my team, as well, concede a goal like this so I can see the disappointment on the other side but I can see the other side as well."
"I'm really happy, of course, with his performance. He believes once again, he keeps going, he will always get his moment. In the first half, he had a one-on-one with the goalie and one really good situation and more came off disappointed he hadn't scored. But then he scored! Players have to be resilient, you get kicked in a game and obviously it happened. It hurts but you have to keep going and you have to do it to get the right result, the right performance. Fight and deal with that, even if it keeps on being painful. You have to contribute to the game. You have to deal with it. He did today and got rewarded for it, the team got rewarded for it. In top football, you have to suffer, sacrifice in getting the right result."
It was more of a team performance. I've seen a lot of brilliant players on my side today. I mention Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw. I have to mention Fred. I definitely have to mention Bruno, he was really brilliant. And what do you think about Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Tyrell Malacia? I think all my players were brilliant."
Many Reds impressed during our dramatic derby victory, but which one won the post-match poll?
"We had to sub Martial and then we played with Antony as the striker. It didn't work as he's better on the right side, obviously. In the first half, Bruno was brilliant, on the right, on the left, in and out of possession. In the striker position, I wanted to change it just before the goal came and to bring Antony dos Santos over to the right."
SPIRIT IN THE CAMP
"I think we have seen it, all in this process, always going, there is fight and spirit in this team. They can deal with setbacks. There was a difficult stage of the game but we came stronger and stronger. The first 30 minutes after half-time were really difficult for us. They were finding players between the lines like Kyle Walker especially. It was difficult and we could not deal with it the whole time but there's also something about the spirit. We keep believing in a good result, that is what the team did and I have to value that. It was a good performance in an important game."
"We go game by game. We think about Crystal Palace and the next game. We have to go celebrate for 24 hours and then we go to Palace and we have to prepare, the team has to prepare themsleves and get the energy and the right focus. It is all about that. We have to train. I have to prepare the team for the next battle."

Jan 14 (Reuters) - Second-placed RC Lens moved within three points of Paris St Germain with a 1-0 home win over 10-man Auxerre in Ligue 1 on Saturday thanks to Przemyslaw Frankowski's second-half penalty.
Lens have 44 points after 19 games behind PSG who visit fourth-placed Stade Rennais on Sunday.
The hosts were awarded a penalty in the 58th minute when Massadio Haidara was brought down by Birama Toure and Frankowski made no mistake from the spot by finding the bottom left corner.
It was Frankowski's second league goal this season and came more than five months after his first.
Auxerre suffered another blow after the goal as they were reduced to 10 players in the 64th minute when Isaak Toure picked up his second yellow for a foul.
The defeat kept Auxerre 18th on 13 points, two points adrift of the safety zone. (Reporting by Manasi Pathak in Bengaluru; Editing by Ken Ferris)

PARIS — Second-placed Lens made it 10 straight home wins in the French league after beating struggling Auxerre 1-0 on Saturday.
Poland winger Przemyslaw Frankowski nailed a penalty kick in the 59th minute with a powerful strike past goalkeeper Benoît Costil, who guessed the right way.
Auxerre finished with 10 players after defender Isaak Touré was sent off midway through the second half, for a second yellow card after fouling forward Florian Sotoca.
Northern side Lens, which has won all of its home games so far, moved to three points behind leader Paris Saint-Germain.
Lens extended its unbeaten league run to nine games but still leads third-placed Marseille only by two points after the southern side beat Lorient 3-1 at home for a sixth straight league win.
Second place secures an automatic place in next season’s Champions League, while the team finishing third enters the competition via the playoff rounds.
Lorient danger man Terem Moffi struck again to give the visitors the lead in the 29th with a superb volley from a corner. It was the Nigeria striker’s 12th league goal, moving him one ahead of PSG’s Neymar and one behind top scorer Kylian Mbappé of PSG.
Marseille is resilient this season under coach Igor Tudor and bounced back 10 minutes later, when defender Sead Kolasinac headed in Turkey winger Cengiz Ünder’s cross.
Veteran Chile striker Alexis Sanchez put Marseille ahead in the 53rd when he finished powerfully from Kolasinac’s deflected cross, and France midfielder Jordan Veretout’s shot following a long ball made it 3-1 six minutes later.
Also, Strasbourg moved out of the relegation zone after winning at Lyon 2-1.
Midfielder Jean-Eudes Aholou volleyed in from a corner in the 28th and striker Habib Diallo doubled Strasbourg’s lead four minutes later.
Former Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette pulled a goal back in first-half injury time with a penalty for his 11th goal of the campaign, and had a close-range shot brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Matz Sels near the end.
It was Lyon’s second straight home defeat. Some angry Lyon fans tried to force their way onto the field and were pushed back by riot police.
On Sunday, PSG is at fourth-placed Rennes.

Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes, has insisted Manchester City are still favourites to win the Premier League this season.
City threw away a one-goal lead to lose 2-1 to United on Saturday.
Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford struck late in the game to cancel Jack Grealish’s opener.
Scholes feels United are now title contenders, but still expects City to chase down Arsenal, who can go eight points clear if they beat Tottenham on Sunday.
“We’ve learned that Manchester United can beat a big team when the pressure is on and when they need to.
“Are they in the title race? I think you have to say they are. If they keep people fit, they are one point behind Man City now.
“City are still the favourites for me, they’re still the best team in this league,” Scholes told BT Sport.

Verratti is now in his 12th season in French capital having swapped Pescara for the Parc des Princes as a bright-eyed 19-year-old in the summer of 2012, and has racked up 29 major honours since.
A midfield metronome, and arguably the best in the world in his position, the Italy international has attracted admiring glances from across Europe over the last decade, but he has become a fixture with PSG and in Paris.
"As soon as I arrived here, I fell in love," Verratti told France Football. "I immediately fell in love with this city. It's impossible not to love Paris.
Watch: Mischievous Marco Verratti
"I spent many of my days discovering, walking, visiting museums, exhibitions. For the first two or three years, I really liked it. People didn't stop me in the streets."
Naturally, Verratti's fame soon saw that latter appeal diminish, but he is unlikely to swap his life in Paris for a new project any time soon having signed a four-year contract extension in December.
Verratti has averaged more than three tackles per game over the last year, but is also in the 99th percentile league-wide for attempted passes and progressive passes, making him one of the biggest assets on both sides of the ball in the game today.

The 20-year-old only signed his first professional contract in February, before making his debut against OGC Nice in August.
And, already, the young star has established himself as a key player for Toulouse in his maiden campaign, with three goals and four assists from his 16 matches. Head coach Philippe Montanier has been impressed with the academy graduate.
"These are his first steps in Ligue 1, and much like the team, he's improving," he told the Ligue 1 Show on beIN SPORTS. "Last week, he nearly scored and made an assist. He's an efficient player who's present in our attack, and also helps a lot in winning the ball back. He's a complete player."
Watch: Chaïbi starred as Toulouse beat Auxerre 5-0 on Wednesday
Chaïbi oozes confidence on the pitch, and plays like he has been a top-flight talent for years. The French-Algerian's versatility is crucial for Toulouse. His ability to play on the left, as a No. 10, or even as a striker, has won him plaudits, and he is enjoying his football.
"It's going really well," he said. "Every day at training we work on understanding. I sometimes play midfield, sometimes attack, so it varies, but until now it's all good. I'm happy so long as I'm on the pitch. I trained as a midfielder but can play several positions."
Chaïbi has reportedly attracted interest from the likes of Arsenal and Sevilla, but remains grounded, and focused on the job at hand with newly-promoted Toulouse.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company NNPC Limited is set to spud the first oil well in Nasarawa state, North central Nigeria in March 2023.
The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Company, Mallam Mele Kyari, disclosed this when the Governor of the State Engr. Abdullahi Sule led a delegation of prominent indigenes of the state on a courtesy visit to the NNPC Ltd in Abuja and said that the results of exploratory activities confirm the presence of substantial hydrocarbon resources in the state.
He called for prompt action on the project as the global energy transition has led to a reduction in investment in fossil fuels.
“This work must be done very fast because the whole world is walking away from fossil fuel due to energy transition, the earlier you go to market, the better for you, otherwise, ten years from now, no one will agree to put money in petroleum business except it comes from your cash flow’’ Mallam Kyari said.
He added that community support and a conducive environment are key to a successful operation in the area to avoid the experience of the Niger Delta.
In his response, Governor Sule congratulated the GCEO on the successful commencement of oil production and the Kolmani Integrated development project which was launched in November 2022 by President Muhammadu Buhari, which he described as similar to what obtains in Saudi Arabia.
“I want to congratulate you, the management of NNPC and the federal government for what you have done at Kolmani, for those who don’t know what you have done for Nigeria, you have written your name in gold’’ governor Sule stated.
He commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his support while assuring the NNPC of a conducive environment. The governor was accompanied on the visit by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress and first executive governor of the State, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, his predecessor, Senator Tanko Almakura, Minister of Environment, Mohammed Hassan Abdullahi, Emir of Lafia, HRH Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad, and other dignitaries.

Businessday Ng -
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has said Nasarawa State is expected to join the league of oil-producing states in the country, as it will commence its first oil well drilling in March this year.
Mele Kyari, group chief executive officer, NNPCL said on Friday, that the official spud-in of the first oil well in Nasarawa State will commence in March 2023.
According to Kyari, this is in continuation of hydrocarbon exploration activities in Nigeria’s inland basins.
NNPC’s boss disclosed this while receiving in the audience a delegation of prominent Nasarawa State indigenes led by Abdullahi Sule, governor of Nasarawa state at the NNPC Towers, Abuja.
Kyari said that available data has confirmed the presence of hydrocarbons in Nasarawa State, with the company ready to commence drilling the first oil well in Keana by March.
He explained that, once the Keana well proves successful, it can transform the potential of the state tremendously.
“We have carried out several exploratory activities in the form of gathering the right data and making the right decisions. We are very convinced at this point that very soon Nasarawa State will join the league of states with a hydrocarbon presence,” he said.
“This is not far away. We believed that we will start the first well in Nasarawa State by March and this is to confirm, it’s very typical science, that once we can make a success of that well, then the potentials of Nasarawa are beyond what I can explain at this point.”
He however warned that the process needs to be hastened as the world is now moving away from fossil fuels toward renewable energy.
According to Kyari, it is a work in progress but the opportunity of our lifetime is in our hands. This also must be done very fast. I must warn you that there is something called energy transition.
He further said that the whole world is turning away from fossil fuel, and the earlier you go to the market, the better for you. Otherwise, ten years from now, you will not find anyone agreeing to put money into the petroleum business, except if it comes from your cash flow.
“Everything we must do, we must do them now so that we can create the cash flow that will continue to sustain the project going forward,” he said.
Harping on the need for a clement environment to undertake the oil exploration in Keana, Kyari said the company has sufficient experience from the Niger Delta, as well as globally, stressing that his firm is taking adequate steps to avoid them in Gombe, Bauchi, in the Chad Basin, as well as anywhere else that the NNPC is going into exploration activities.

He however said support from communities is necessary.
“Community support is very eminent. We will continue to engage so that those mistakes of the past do not repeat themselves so that we can accelerate development in the communities,” Kyari said.
On the other hand, Timipre Sylva, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources said the country is willing to produce every available oil in the country, especially at a time when the world is moving away from fossil fuel.
He said “It is in your interest to produce as much crude as possible; take it out of the ground and monetise it as quickly as possible so that even if the world moves on, we would have at least taken advantage of our resources.
“I assure the Nasarawa State Governor to count on this office, in whatever way, to support the production of oil in Keana. We are on the same page.”
Sylva added that Ministry has adopted integrated field development because that is the easiest remedy for pipeline vandalization.
In his remarks, the Nasarawa State governor said Nigeria has so many opportunities and so many areas of great potential, like the Chad Basin, Benue Trough where Nasarawa State belongs, the Sokoto Basin, Benin Basin, and Anambra Basin amongst others.
Sule appealed to the NNPC, especially with the managing director going to acquire the 3-D seismic for Keana, to look at the aspect of what is happening in Keana, because from the outside potentials of what has been seen so far, presents excellent opportunities.
On his part, Sidi Bage Muhammad, the Emir of Lafia, who spoke on behalf of the community, said since the founding of Nasarawa State, there was nothing as great as the discovery of oil in Keana.
He expressed appreciation that oil exploration is taking place in Keana under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, who has made Nasarawa State his second home.
