The Fresno Bee reported that Bukle "said he doesn't want anyone else to experience what he went through," and there have been too many who have. The nonpartisan Government Accountability Office (GAO) said in a 2021 report that 800 prospective US citizens were arrested or detained between 2015 and 2020. Up to 70 were deported. And because of ICE's well-known aversion to record keeping, who knows who else we don't know about.
“Cases like mine are important because they help agencies like ICE realize that what they are doing is completely wrong and it helps other people who are harmed by ICE to know that there are people who care about their rights and will fight alongside them. them," he said. the outlet.
Bukle, who is originally from the British Virgin Islands and has been a US citizen since the age of 9, should have been released by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation after completing his time in 2020. But instead, he had been included in an immigrant list for ICE to pick up. In Bukle's case, it wasn't even ICE that caught him, but a third-party contractor called G4S Secure Solutions, Inc.
People were wondering aloud if using a third-party contractor in this way was legal, and it turned out that it wasn't. It's illegal under federal law, but ICE has been doing it anyway since at least 2016 because, well, ICE is a cabal of sadists trying to make immigrant lives miserable. Under a settlement stemming from a lawsuit by the Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Asian Law Caucus and the ACLU Foundation of Northern California, the mass deportation agency finally agreed to stop using the services of contractors like G4S Secure Solutions, Inc. in this way. , in addition to having to shell out more than $200,000 in legal fees.
“From the time he was in ICE custody, Brian told officers over and over again that he is a US citizen, but they ignored him,” said the Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Asian Law Caucus and the ACLU Foundation of North America. California when announcing the new settlement. He had been detained at the Mesa Verde ICE Processing Facility in Bakersfield, a privately operated prison on our radar for a long time for human rights abuses and entirely preventable COVID-19 outbreaks. Officials “didn't care about me or my life,” Bukle said last year.
Officials with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation were also aware of his immigration status. Research has shown that black immigrants are much more likely to be deported.
“Brian was in ICE custody for 36 days, gaining release only after contacting an immigration attorney who finally forced ICE to admit what the documents in their possession had shown all along: Brian has been a citizen. American since I was a child,” the organizations continued. ICE had also ignored its own policy directing officials to take certain steps to investigate "the possible United States citizenship of persons encountered by ICE," according to court documents.
“We are pleased that Mr. Bukle prevailed in his claims against ICE, but we realize that no amount of money can give someone back the time they lost while they were wrongfully detained,” ACLU attorney Minju Cho told The Fresno Bee. from Northern California. “No amount of money can undo the trauma a person experiences in immigration detention.”

The agreement provides that the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will issue Daniel Ramírez Medina, 29, a four-year suspension of removal from the United States. Mr. Ramírez Medina can request other immigration relief during that four-year period. ICE will not use any records or statements made before May 15, 2018 to evaluate any of Mr. Ramírez Medina's applications and specifically will not consider any allegation that he is a gang member or a threat to public safety.
“This agreement essentially gives Mr. Ramírez Medina a clean slate as he works to obtain legal status in the United States,” said US Attorney Nick Brown. “I am pleased that this agreement does not involve any monetary payment and yet goes to the core of what Mr. Ramírez Medina wants: a fair chance to obtain legal status in the US.”
On February 10, 2017, ICE agents arrested Mr. Ramírez Medina at the Des Moines, Washington apartment he shared with his father and brother. Mr. Ramírez Medina was detained at the ICE detention center in Tacoma until an immigration judge ordered his release on March 29, 2017. In his false arrest and imprisonment tort claims, Mr. Ramírez Medina alleges that he was arrested and detained by mistake.
The settlement agreement states that it is not an admission of liability or fault by any party, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), ICE, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), or Mr. Ramirez Medina.
The agreement also provides that if Mr. Ramírez Medina violates the law, the grant of deferred action may be terminated.
Resolution of this matter was brokered by Assistant United States Attorneys Nickolas Bohl and Kristen Vogel.

Barcelona have won the Copa del Rey more than any other team in the competition's history. They won their record 31st title against Athletic Bilbao in 2021. However, last season they were knocked out of the tournament in Ro16 by the same opponents. They will be looking to add to their impressive list of trophies by winning it again this year.
Barcelona's first match will be against third division Intercity. They are expected to easily outplay their opponents and give important minutes to both youngsters and players who have recently recovered from injury.
Intercity sit in the relegation zone of Group 2 in the First Federation in 16th place with just 19 points from 17 games. They have already drawn with Barcelona's B team in the league earlier this season. However, the players will be keen to put on a good display against Barca's first team, and with the Blaugrana's focus on the upcoming matches, we could see a big upset in the making.

The eleven starters for today's Serie A match between Marco Baroni's Lecce and Maurizio Sarri's Lazio have been announced.
The Biancocelesti enter 2023 in the top four and will be keen to snatch all three points along the way as they look to start the new year off in the best possible way. Lecce had a difficult start to the season and are currently 16th in the table, so an upset win for the Puglia side could give them vital points in a potential relegation battle.
Lazio will be without the injured Mario Gila and Luis Alberto, who could return in time for their next game against Empoli on January 8. Lecce will be without Kastriot Dermaku and Kristjan Bistrovic, both out due to injuries.
Sarri has fielded a strong Biancocelesti squad, putting stars like Ciro Immobile, Mattia Zaccagni and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in his starting line-up. Toma Básico has also started in midfield, leaving Matías Vecino on the bench.
Starting lineups Lecce vs Lazio
Lecce (4-3-3): Hawk; Gendrey, Baschirotto, Umtiti, Gallo; Gonzalez, Wheelman, Blinn; Strefezza, Colombo, Banda.
Lazio (4-3-3): provenel; Lazzari, Casale, Romagnoli, Marusic; Milinkovic, Cataldi, Basic; Peter, Immobile, Zaccagni.

Taiwo Awoniyi's fourth Premier League goal of the season lifted Nottingham Forest to a huge win and plunged Southampton to a new season low following a 1-0 win at St. Mary's on Wednesday.
Brennan Johnson drove through the Saints back line and powered Awoniyi for a first-half goal and Nathan Jones's hosts were unable to find an answer as they lost their sixth successive Premier League game of the season.

Southampton sit last in the Premier League with 12 points, last picking up a point in a 1-1 draw with Arsenal on October 23. The Saints have only won three times this season and are 1W-2D-10L since the schedule switched to September.
Forest, meanwhile, continues his way up the table and sits in 15th place with 17 points. Steve Cooper's Tricky Trees have three wins, four draws and two losses since a loss to Wolves on Oct. 15 dropped their record to 1W-2D-7L.
[ MORE: How to watch Premier League in USA ] Cooper, Forest reward club's patience with well-deserved winNottingham Forest bought a large number of players at the start of the season, and their instant problems led some to believe that manager Steve Cooper could be sacked for failing to find success.
But perhaps the club's leadership knew it would take time for Forest to figure it out and Cooper has rewarded them by finding a good mix of players. If that was the plan all along, bear with me, then good for them.
The Tricky Trees amassed 13 points and lost just twice since mid-October as Awoniyi, Renan Lodi, Willy Boly and several other "new faces" worked their way into their system.
Meanwhile, Southampton are in the early days of a big turnaround of their own. Firing Ralph Hasenhuttl hasn't led to instant success and manager Nathan Jones clearly needs some January pieces to steady the ship.
James Ward-Prowse and Kyle Walker-Peters were fine in defeat, but there have been predictable bouts of inconsistency for a team as young as Southampton.

These are desperate times for Southampton and their 10-year stay in the Premier League appears to be in serious jeopardy. Given that they've only won three of their 17 games so far this season, it's a miracle they're still anywhere near safety. Nathan Jones is already under a lot of pressure and they are changing formations and personnel often during games. The Saints have to stop conceding silly goals if they want to get out of trouble.
Forest looks much better after a season of cuts and changes to their lineup and Cooper's side have real grit and determination about them. They also look very dangerous on the counter attack and could have easily beaten Chelsea at home. Now they know their best team and the attacking trio of Morgan Gibbs-White, Taiwo Awoniyi and Brennan Johnson are a handful.
Fit Players to WatchJames Ward-Prowse has scored in each of these last two games and the Southampton skipper is doing everything he can to regain his form and help them move up the table. Teenage winger Samuel Edozie has been terrific and apart from that Southampton need Romeo Lavia to get going on his return from injury. They also need Armel Bella-Kotchap and Mohammed Salisu to improve, while Stuart Armstrong and Romain Perraud could enter the starting line-up.
Forest will need their defensive unit to stay strong as Willy Boly and Joe Worrall have played well together in central defence. Ryan Yates has also been excellent in midfield and Gibbs-White connects very well in attack with Johnson and Awoniyi providing plenty of threat.
Southampton team news, injuries, line-up optionsWho knows who will start at Southampton? The big boost is that Romeo Lavia is finally in shape. Juan Larios, Theo Walcott and Tino Livramento are out while Alex McCarthy is struggling to recover from injury. Samuel Edozie is ready to go.

NEW DELHI : Chinese smartphone makers Xiaomi, Oppo, Realme and Vivo continued to dominate the Indian market in 2022, despite increased scrutiny from regulatory and tax authorities. However, the cautious approach of some of these brands may see competitors, mainly global brands Samsung, Apple, Nokia and Nothing, grab a bigger slice of the market in 2023, industry watchers said.
According to data from two research firms shared with the Mint, Chinese brands continued to have a majority share of the smartphone segment last year, with sales down a bit compared to 2021.
TechArc said the share of Chinese companies in India was 68.5% in December, compared with 71% in December 2021, while Counterpoint Research said their share was just one percentage point lower in January-October. from 2022 to 75% from 76% in the year. behind.
“The weakening of the R brands (Redmi and Realme) will affect the share of the Chinese brand in 2023, and we expect a strong return from Samsung in the online space thanks to the M series, which has done well,” he said. TechArc founder Faisal Kawoosa. The target market for Chinese brands has moved beyond basic and entry-level smartphones to the premium and luxury segments, which could lead to market share shifting towards global brands, he said.
“Their share may decline in 2023 as these brands will be cautious in their approach and the competition will be aggressive and take share,” said Prachir Singh, a senior research analyst at Counterpoint Research.
This is because the government has been increasing scrutiny of Chinese technology and has banned several Chinese apps following geopolitical tensions between the two countries.
The Enforcement Directorate has seized Rs 456 crore from 119 Vivo India bank accounts under the money laundering prevention rules, while the Revenue Intelligence Directorate has issued good cause notices to Vivo India for customs duty evasion of 2,217 crore, and demanded 4,389 crore from Oppo India for allegedly evading customs duties.
Xiaomi is also facing an ED investigation for foreign exchange regulation violations and its assets worth ₹5,551 crore were seized in May. Separately, the income tax authorities issued a seizure order on his deposit accounts worth ₹3,700 crore in August. Xiaomi has moved the courts to challenge the order.
However, despite the unfavorable circumstances, Chinese brands will remain strong due to the absence of strong competitive brands other than Samsung, which maintained its No. 2 position with a 16-20% market share since January 2021.
Indian brands like Lava and In, according to TechArc data, had a small 1.5% share in December, up from 2% in December 2021. Samsung is the only non-Chinese global player in the mix to have a share. of the market, as Indian players are absent from this space, Singh said. "In addition, the focus of some brands has shifted from the volume-driven entry-level segment to high-priced levels."
