Dr Abubakar Alhassan, a Lecturer with the Faculty of Communications, Bayero University Kano (BUK), has tasked journalists on ethical reportage during the 2023 electioneering to ensure peace in the country.
Alhassan made the call at the end of a 3-day workshop on Sharia Intelligence, Constructive Alternative Narratives, Peace and Ethical Journalism in Yola on Friday.
Alhassan said journalists have vital roles to play in peace building, especially now that the electioneering was kicked started in the build up to the 2023 General Elections.
He advised the participants to professionally apply the ethics and have credible information for effective sensitization of the electorate, among others activities.
Alhassan also advised the broadcast media stations to adhere to the guidelines of National Broadcast Commission (NBC), to avoid being sanctioned for flouting them.
He cautioned the journalists against heat speeches, promoting fake news and rumors that could results to the destablisation of peace in the society.
In his remarks, Malam Jafar Isa, the center’s Program Officer said that the workshop was organised to build the capacity of the journalists on the attainment of peace in the country.
He advised journalists to always reaching to the right clerics for clarifications on any religious matters.
Mr Mr Umar Abubakar, General Manager, Pullaku FM Radio, Yola, who spoke on behalf of the participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity given to them to improve their capacities.
He assured that the knowledge acquired would be put to proper use, while it will also be stepped down to other colleagues.
