Nottingham Forest v. Chelsea, Premier League: preview, team news, how to watch

It's a time for new or renewed resolutions and fresh beginnings as we turn the page from 2022 to 2023. Of course, that's just a symbolic event, aside from perhaps some new traffic and tax laws coming into effect... and all the local idiots setting off fireworks to scare my dogs into starting some fires.

    But I digress.

Chelsea entered 2022 with a terrible December (12 points from 21), battling injuries (Ben Chilwell, Reece James) and interviews (Romelu Lukaku) and COVID concerns. (And that was nothing compared to what the next few months would bring!)

Chelsea head into 2023 after a terrible month (2 points from 15), and subsequent break and win, so 8 points from 21, battling injuries (Ben Chilwell, Reece James and many more) and various other concerns, including the part where we are not comfortably in the top four unlike twelve months ago.

What will the next months bring? Let's start on a good note!

    Date and Time: January 1, 2023, 16:30 GMT; 11:30 a.m. EST; 10 p.m.
    Event: City Ground, Nottingham, England
Referee: Peter Bankes (on the field); Andre Mariner (VAR)
    Forecast: windy but dry

On TV: Sky Sports Main Event (UK); none (US); Star Sports Select HD1 (India); Premier SuperSport League (NGA); elsewhere
Transmission: SkyGo (UK); peacock (USA); Hotstar (India); DStv Now (NGA)

Nottingham Forest team news: Forest are back in the Premier League after a 23-year absence, and surprised some by putting together an almost new team over the summer, with no fewer than 22 (twenty-two!) newcomers and 20 (twenty!) departures. (including a group of loans going back to their parent clubs).

Perhaps unsurprisingly, they weren't exactly a cohesive or capable unit for a while, managing just 1 win in their first 11 league games. But Steve Cooper has turned things around a bit, and they have two wins and seven points from their last five, moving them from the bottom of the table. In fact, that's three points better than our record over the same span, so Graham Potter is probably right to be wary. Former Liverpool loan warrior and Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi leads the team in scoring with three goals.

In less guarded news, record-setting Morgan Gibbs-White remains out, while Jesse Lingard took a hit in his previous game. Cheikhou Kouyaté, Moussa Niakhaté, Omar Richards and Giulian Biancone are dealing with long-term injuries. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson returns from ineligibility against his parent club.

Chelsea Team News: The fifty minutes of Reece James we got to enjoy against Bournemouth will have to suffice for next month as our talismanic right-back has worsened his knee injury. So that's a problem, especially since we also looked considerably worse after his departure in that game.

The numbers in training have been boosted by the returns of Mateo Kovačić and Hakim Ziyech, but that's all for the good news in terms of injuries and availability. Hopefully Édouard Mendy, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Wesley Fofana will return soon, but Ben Chilwell, N'Golo Kanté and Armando Broja will be out for the long haul.

Chelsea would move up (up!) to seventh (wow!) place with a win, closing the gap to third-place Newcastle United to seven points, who drew 0-0 against Leeds United today. We can still do a top four/six race! (Manchester City also lost points, while Arsenal won easily, albeit almost [FUNNED] above, which is annoying, but the title race is not our fight).

Previously: Since our last league meeting we have beaten Forest three times in the FA Cup and once in the League Cup, all at Stamford Bridge. That last Premier League game, in February 1999, was our last visit to the City Ground, with Chelsea winning 3-1: Mikael Forssell and Bjarne "swapped for Brian Laudrup" Goldbæk scored, the latter twice! Back in 1999, everything was filmed with a potato.

The worst lady of 2022? Gerard Moreno for Villarreal vs Valencia

Gerard Moreno is a first class striker, there is no doubt about that.

The Spaniard, who unfortunately missed the world cup 2022 due to injury - has scored many goals for Villarreal in recent years.

In his 223 games in all competitions with the Yellow Submarine, Moreno waved the back of the net 101 times.

He also contributed 23 assists in that time, a very impressive overall performance.

But even a striker as good as Moreno is capable of producing a moment that is more akin to a Sunday League affair than a professional game.

During Villarreal's final game of 2022 against Valencia on Saturday, the 30-year-old made a late try for the 'worst miss of the year'.

Early in the first half at the Estadio de la Cerámica, Moreno looked sure to open the scoring when the easier opportunity presented itself from about twenty feet.

But instead of walking away to celebrate as he has done so many times in his career, Moreno was left with his head in his hands after inexplicably hitting the post.

Trust us when we say it was an absolute surprise...

Video: Tremendous mistake by Moreno in Villarreal vs Valencia

Oh, wow. Failures in professional football don't get much worse than that, right?

To make matters worse for Moreno and Villarreal, Edinson Cavani opened the scoring for Valencia soon after.

    Oh…

    We'll start easy...

    Brighton 2 – 4 Arsenal – Match Report

On a New Year's Eve to remember, we ended 2022 by beating Brighton & Hove Albion in a thrilling encounter to move seven points up at the top of the Premier League.

Just 66 seconds had passed before Bukayo Saka put us ahead, and Martin Odegaard's seventh of the season gave us a two-goal lead at half-time, which Eddie Nketiah quickly added after the restart.

However, Robert De Zerbi's side fought back and Kaoru Mitoma cut back on the goal, which was disallowed just six minutes later by Gabriel Martinelli. Evan Ferguson's effort saw the game re-enter the final stages, but we held on to ensure plenty of New Years cheer for celebrating Gooners around the world.

    Dream start via Saka

A great opportunity presented itself to us to extend our lead over Manchester City at the top after they drew with Everton earlier in the day, and we didn't hesitate to take it.

Just into the second minute, Thomas Partey stripped Tariq Lamptey in a dangerous area, and Oleksandr Zinchenko fed Martinelli. The Brazilian saw a shot deflected from Lewis Dunk and into the path of Saka, who scored his sixth league goal of the campaign at home.

Two minutes later, we nearly made it to a second as Zinchenko snuck behind the Seagulls back line, but Robert Sanchez dropped the angle quickly to block, but the visitors began to show why they were sitting in seventh and Aaron Ramsdale , making his 50th appearance, was forced to deflect a pair of clumsy shots from Leandro Trossard.

    gunners on fire

But with the game finely balanced, in the 39th minute we managed to double our lead and stop the momentum of the home team. Saka took a dangerous corner that only went to the edge of the box where Odegaard was available to take a shot towards goal, and our captain saw him deflect from Adam Lallana and into the back of the net.

That all-important second gave us a cushion going into the interval, and we once again snapped out of the traps after the restart, taking less than two minutes to virtually put the game to bed.

We worked the ball well in midfield and a fine pass from Partey once again found Martinelli in a threatening position, who pulled the trigger and forced Sánchez into a low save, but the ball spun enticingly into Nketiah's path. , who finished off closely. range.

    brighton strike back

We seemed to be sailing towards victory, and only a good save from Sánchez to Gabriel after a free kick kept it 3-0, but in the 65th minute and with their first real goal seen in the second half, the Gaviotas managed to give themselves hope. .
Pascal Gross found himself in space in the final third and slid the ball to Mitoma, who managed to stay marginally to the side and slide the ball cleanly past Ramsdale. That injected some confidence into the home crowd, but it was quickly extinguished as we got our fourth match of the night.

Gabriel dispatched a dangerous ball in our own box, and the ball found its way to Odegaard through Granit Xhaka. The captain flicked a delightful pass into space for Martinelli to run, stopped Lamptey and fired between Sanchez's legs to score a superb goal and send the traveling Gooners wild.

But Brighton did not leave and with 14 minutes to go they made it 4-2. A long ball forward saw a miscommunication between Ramsdale and William Saliba, allowing Ferguson to tuck in and drive the ball down the line.

And nerves were on edge when with two minutes to go Mitoma thought he had added his second when he found the net from inside the box again, but VAR ruled him out for offside in the build-up as we held to secure the goal. all-important win and finish the year off perfectly.

    facts and statistics

We are only the fifth team in the history of the English top flight to score up to 43 points in the first 16 games of a season (3 points per win) after Tottenham (46 points in 1960/61), Chelsea (43 points in the 2005/06), Man City (46 pts in 2017/18) and Liverpool (46 pts in 2019/20).

Brighton have lost three of their last five Premier League home games (W1 D1), having been unbeaten in the previous seven prior to this run.

We scored in the first two minutes of both halves in a single Premier League game for the first time since December 2013 against Hull.

After just 66 seconds, Bukayo Saka scored our first Premier League away goal since May 2013, when Theo Walcott netted after just 20 seconds against QPR.

Martin Odegaard has been involved in 12 goals in his last 13 Premier League appearances (7 goals, 5 assists). In fact, he has been involved in more league goals this season (12 in 15 applications) than in all of 2021/22 (11 in 36 applications).

Eddie Nketiah has scored 10 goals in his last 16 starts in all competitions, scoring in each of his last three starts.

Two of Kaoru Mitoma's three goals for Brighton in all competitions have come against us, while he has scored twice in his last three Premier League games, failing to find the back of the net in any of his first eight appearances in the competition.

At 18 years and 73 days, Evan Ferguson became Brighton's youngest Premier League goalscorer.

    Whats Next

Brighton vs Arsenal: lineups and LIVE updates

A delicious match is on the cards when Arsenal visit glittering Brighton.

League leaders Arsenal will visit Falmer Stadium to take on seventh-placed Brighton in what promises to be a great game. Both Arsenal and Brighton marked their return to the Premier League with identical 3-1 wins over West Ham and Southampton respectively.

Arsenal are on 40 points from 15 games, having won their previous four league games in a row. Mikel Arteta has completely transformed the Gunners and a win tonight will extend their lead at the top of the table to 8 points over second placed Manchester City, even if they have played one more game.

Brighton have won just four games out of 11 under new boss Roberto De Zerbi. His inconsistent form, along with the absences of World Cup-winning midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, who won't be available until after the turn of the year, and Moises Caicedo, who will serve suspension after picking up a yellow card against Southampton, will be a reason. of concern for the Italian coach.

The Saints of Jones are alive, but just barely

Analysis by Sky Sports' Richard Morgan:

Picture: Nathan Jones is already under pressure at Southampton after losing all three league games in charge

This was already looking like a big game for new Southampton manager Nathan Jones who, despite having been in charge of St Mary's since 10 November, was in charge of his third Premier League match at Fulham after taking over from Ralph Hasenhuttl. on the south coast.

Jones lost his first two matches by the same 3-1 scoreline, in Liverpool just before the World Cup and then at home to rivals Brighton and Hove Albion on Boxing Day, meaning he was really hoping for a case of luck for Third time in a terrific Craven Cabin.

Indeed, Jones described Joao Palhinha's 88th-minute winner as "devastating", especially given how well his players had done to level things in the second half, but all that was for naught when it rang. the final whistle.

And now the former Luton Town boss must somehow try to set his side up for a massive six-point relegation at home to fellow Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night in a clash against Saints, who are still in the bottom, one point behind their opponents at midweek. they simply must win if they are to avoid being left adrift.

DAY: Lloris from France and Martínez from Argentina are in the EPL

A look at what's happening in European football on Sunday:

The two goalkeepers in the World Cup final, Frenchman Hugo Lloris and Argentine hero Emiliano Martínez, will meet again two weeks later when Tottenham host Aston Villa in the 2023 Premier League opener. Tottenham's Antonio Conte says Lloris will return to the starting eleven after being on the bench for Monday's draw with Brentford. Villa manager Unai Emery is also expected to start Martinez. Tottenham can move back above Manchester United in the top four, the Champions League places, with a win. In the other league game on Sunday, 19th-placed Nottingham Forest host Chelsea.

French league leaders Paris Saint-Germain face their toughest test of the season when they travel to play Lens, who have won all eight of their home games this season. A win for second-place Lens would put him four points behind defending champion PSG, who will be without the suspended Neymar and World Cup winner Lionel Messi, who returns to training next week. PSG manager Christophe Galtier's side are unbeaten after 16 games but have conceded soft goals on occasion, including a midweek win against Strasbourg. Fifth-placed Monaco welcome Brest to the Stade Louis II with all eyes on 17-year-old Monaco midfielder Eliesse Ben Seghir, the latest talent from their youth academy, after he came off the bench and scored two goals on his league debut in midweek.

Odegaard is too good! Arsenal’s winners, losers and rankings as captain stars again to send the Gunners seven points clear

    martin odegaard

The Arsenal captain's drag and nutmeg over Lewis Dunk was worth the gate fee alone, as was his outrageous pass to send Gabriel Martinelli away for Arsenal's fourth goal. Odegaard is enjoying excellent form and he backed up his terrific performance against West Ham on Boxing Day with another terrific performance here. The playmaker pulled Arsenal's strings all night and linked up especially well with Martinelli and Oleksandr Zinchenko on the left. His ability to take Dunk out of the game and create an opportunity for Martinelli was impressive and summed up the level of his performance at this point. Odegaard's goal, which made it 2-0 just before halftime, was his seventh in the league this season. No Arsenal player has scored more. He also now has nine goal appearances in his last eight games. The Norway international may not be the screaming and yelling type of captain, but he certainly leads by example with his performance on the pitch.

    Thomas Partey

Bukayo Saka could have scored after 66 seconds, but it was Thomas Partey who played a key role. Brighton looked set to launch a threatening counter-attack when Tariq Lamptey stripped the ball from Odegaard. But before the Brighton full-back could get going, Partey slipped in and robbed him of possession to start the play that led to Saka opening the scoring. It was Partey in his prime and a play very similar to the tackle he produced on Declan Rice in the build-up to Saka's draw against West Ham on Boxing Day. Partey is so fundamental in this Arsenal and that has perfectly highlighted him in his two meetings on these festive dates.

    Arsenal fans everywhere

What a way to end 2022. There's still a long way to go this season, but Arsenal fans around the world must be pinching themselves right now. The Gunners start the new year seven points clear at the top of the Premier League and are playing the kind of football every fan wants to see their team play. It's been a long time coming, but Arsenal have a team their supporters can be proud of, whatever happens between now and the end of the season.
