The widow of late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Bianca, and Sen. Uche Ekwunife (PDP-Anambra Central), have joined other prominent Nigerians to condemn Sunday’s fatal attack on Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah’s motorcade.

Rep. Chris Azubuogu (APGA-Nnewi Federal Constituency) also decried the attack on the lawmaker, representing Anambra South.

In separate statements made available to newsmen in Awka on Monday, the trio described the dastardly act as condemnable.

Bianca, who is from Anambra South, stated: “I mourn with the people of Anambra and Sen. Ubah over the horrific attack on his motorcade.

“Many lives were lost in this satanic ambush, folks who just set out for the day, just another ordinary day, but never made it home, their lives brutally cut short by heartless gunmen.

“Their families are bleeding, Anambra is bleeding.

“We are all bleeding for this rain of bullets is falling on our collective roofs, and with each gruesome attack, another abominable threshold is crossed.

” Also, Ekwunife stated that she received the news of the attack with shock.

“I condemn the incident in strongest terms.

    It is unimaginable.

“My condolences go to Ubah, the families of the police officers and his aides killed and injured in the attack,” she stated.

Azubuogu described the attack as “reprehensible and condemnable”.

He added that the news of the attack came to him as a rude shock.

“With a heavy heart, I sincerely commiserate with the distinguished lawmaker, the families of his late aides and the entire Police community.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, says the Federal Government is working to ensure that the country’s Intellectual Property (IP) law and administration are in line with current realities.

Malami said this on Monday when the Senior Counsellor, World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), Ms Lorreta Asiedu, led a delegation to pay him a courtesy visit in his office in Abuja.

The minister was represented by the Permanent Secretary and Solicitor-General, Ministry of Justice, Mrs Beatrice Jedy-Agba. “I assure you that we are committed to modernizing the entire IP system in Nigeria.

This will include the Trade Mark Act, the Patent and Design Act. “There are also legislative work that we will be looking at to ensure that it is in line with the new copyright law.

“We hope that this will also serve as catalyst for needed reforms in all aspect of IP law and administration and then bring them in line with current reality in this digital age,’’ Malami said.

Earlier, Asiedu said the visit was to seek the minister’s support on WIPO’s efforts in developing National Intellectual Property Policy and Strategy for the country.

She said that WIPO had been working with the Nigerian Copyright Commission, consultants and relevant stakeholders in developing the National IP Policy and Strategy for Nigeria.

“This request is a long standing one and we are happy that finally we are able to bring it to this level.

“Under our medium strategic plan, the five-year vision aimed at supporting IP so that it makes an impact in the lives of ordinary citizens.

“We want to harness the IP potential of youths in the country through the framework of the National IP policy and strategy.

“We are looking at supporting the youth entrepreneurs to understand and appreciate IP system; we want to engage in mentorship and coaching programmes,’’ Asiedu said.

According to her, WIPO also wants to use IP to support the country’s Development Goals.

“Within a framework of the National IP policy and strategy, we are able to identify the comparative advantage that the country has.

“So, the area in which a country has a comparative advantage that is what we dwell to ensure that we undertake projects that make impact in the lives of IP users community.

’’ Asiedu added that WIPO intended to extend its reach not only within the legislative framework of the country, but also to knowledge production institutions like universities and research institutions.

“We also want to bring together industry and academia so that we bridge the gap from the time that idea takes off, to when it  heads into market place,’’ she said.

FG inaugurates $200m World Bank-backed IDEAS Project

The Federal Government on Monday inaugurated the Innovation Development and Effectiveness in Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) Project to address challenges facing the nation’s education sector.

World Bank is supporting the IDEAS Project in each of the participating state with the sum of 200 million dollars credit facility for its smooth implementation.

The project has four components with the core objective of  enhancing the capacity of the Nigerian skills development system to produce relevant skills for the formal and informal sectors.

The first component aims to provide grant for the rehabilitation and upgrading of Federal and State Technical Colleges to transform their operational models into public private partnerships, in which industry partners assume prominent role in institutional governance, management and planning, training and service delivery.

The second component will deliver a comprehensive capacity development intervention package for the improvement and modernization of informal apprenticeships to selected informal sector clusters.

The third component will improve the availability of appropriately skilled and competent technical teachers and instructors in the skills development space throughout the country, including teaching staff of private skills development institutions, starting with teaching staff in technical colleges.

The fourth component will rolling-out Nigerian Skills Qualifications Framework reform, which involves curriculum development and revision based on National Occupational Standard, and training and certification of assessors and trainers.

The inauguration was marked with a workshop organised by the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with the World Bank to ensure the success of the IDEAS project.

The workshop, held at the Banquet hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja was for monitoring and evaluation officers in the education sector.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, said that the successful implementation of the IDEAS Project would help Nigeria to grow its economy.

Adamu, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Andrew Adejoh, said monitoring and evaluation officers were being trained to achieve the objectives of the project.

According to the minister, the training will enhance their capacity to effectively carry out their assigned activities across all the four project components of the scheme.

He maintained that the training workshop was meant to achieve the sole aim of strengthening, monitoring and evaluation capacity in the management of the IDEAS Project.

Also speaking at the event, the Country Director, World Bank, Mr Shubham Chaudhuri, urged the benefitting states to make a judicious use of the funds to improve the education sector.

Gov. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti, who also spoke at the event, challenged stakeholders in the education sector to evolve a new approach to upgrade the education system in the country as the ‘white-collar-focused’ system could no longer support national development.

Fayemi, who was represented by Ekiti State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Mrs Olabimpe Aderiye, spoke on the topic “Re-engineering the Nigerian mind from white collar to blue collar enterprises”.

The governor noted that the focus of education in Nigeria had not changed much as bequeathed by colonial administrations.

According to the governor, the nation’s educational system has drastically fallen behind in the contemporary world, making it mandatory for governments at all levels to seek a more fitting system of education for today’s world.

He said: ”Today’s world requires digital, entrepreneurial and vocational skills, accompanying the conventional education, for any nation to catch up with the rest of the world.

” Fayemi, therefore, charged all stakeholders, including government, to urgently come up with the needed redirection to proffer solutions to Nigeria’s myriad of challenges.

“On a general note, education is an essential aspect of civilization and it is an impetus for individual and societal growth and development.

”Therefore, no contemporary nation can toy with her educational system because the educational system of a country will speak volume about her progress.

“The educational system bequeathed to us by our colonial masters and the current system of education in Nigeria are gradually being overtaken by civilization and technological advancement, manifesting in artificial intelligence, automation robotics and the likes,” he said.

This, he said, had  resulted in educational policy summersault and labour market congestion, with its attendant vices.

“Arising from this standpoint therefore, there is the urgent need to rejig our educational system to proffer solutions to the avalanche of challenges confronting us as a nation.

”It is high time we tackle the menace with strong determination for a paradigm shift from the white collar to the blue-collar enterprises,” he added.

NAPTIP orders manhunt of trans-border trafficking suspect

The Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Dr Fatima Waziri-Azi, has ordered a manhunt of a trafficking suspect identified as Nkiru.

NAPTIP’s spokesperson, Mr Vincent Adekoye, made this known in a statement he issued on Monday in Abuja.

He stated that the suspect took a 16-year-old-girl and her son from a community in Anambra to Ghana from where she allegedly recruits victims from remote villages in Nigeria.

He quoted Waziri-Azi as directing an increased surveillance and round-the-clock monitoring of another suspect in the case, popularly known as Zuma. Zuma was said to be the facilitator behind the recruitment and transportation of trafficked victims to Ghana.

Adekoye observed that Zuma’s recent release by NAPTIP in Anambra elicited negative reactions from the people of Awka-Etiti in Idemili South Local Government Area of the state.

He stated that Zuma was released on bail after two weeks at NAPTIP’s detention facility to assist it to trace Nkiru and her victims.

He added that during interrogation, Zuma admitted that Nkiru approached him at a shopping mall in Nnewi and requested for a girl that could work in her bar in Ghana.

It was the request that prompted the recruitment of the victim.

The victim was said to have travelled with her three-month-old baby and nothing had been heard about them ever since.

Adekoye stated that Waziri-Azi assured the community and other stakeholders that NAPTIP would rescue the victim and her son.

He quoted her as saying that NAPTIP would not hesitate to revoke the bail granted to Zuma in the event of a breach of the terms of the bail.

Sanwo-Olu orders removal of abandoned vehicles under bridges

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has ordered removal of all abandoned vehicles parked indiscriminately under bridges across the state.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, disclosed this on Monday, during an emergency meeting with stakeholders, held at Ikeja.

Giwa said that Gov. Sanwo-Olu had declared zero tolerance for environmental abuse, illegal and indiscriminate dumping of refuse and defacing of the environment when he signed the ‘Executive Order’ on traffic and sanitation.

”I can assure you that government will enforce this notice after the expiration of the seven days ultimatum beginning from today (Monday),” he said.

Giwa appealed to owners of abandoned vehicles to comply, as the ‘Removal Notice’ became necessary due to security issues and attendant gridlock in identified areas such as Costain, Apapa, Ajah, Lekki, among others.

In his address, Mr Bolaji Oreagba, General Manager, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), served a seven-day removal and compliance notice to owners of trucks and vehicles parked under Costain Bridge area.

He urged them to comply or risk having their vehicles impounded; and prosecution.

Oreagba expressed worries that the abandoned vehicles were serving as hideouts for criminals, and the present nature of the environment allowed them to escape police arrest.

He said that the state government was committed to reducing the traffic problems  around the axis, hence, it had become important to remove bottlenecks to such policy.

According to him, the indiscriminate parking and abandonment of trucks on the roads is inimical to that policy.

He, therefore, warned the owners to remove them from the area before the expiration of the deadline, as ”there is no going back on this”.

”We are using this medium to warn motorists parking under the bridge of Costain to vacate this area within seven days of grace, because the act is in total violation to traffic laws of the state.

”Apart from violating the laws, this act can serve as haven to criminals, and because of the security threat in the state, we do not want to leave any stone unturned.

”Therefore, after the expiration of the seven days grace, we are going to carry out a total clean-up operation of the entire area and subsequently move to other identified areas such as Ajah, Apapa, Lekki, Agege, Lagos Abeokuta Expressway, among others.

”Please help us to put this information across to them because there is no going back on this exercise,” Oreagba said.
