    CBN’s e-Naira game-changer of Nigerian economy- BMO

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN’s) strategy of an efficient payment system through the introduction and implementation of the e-Naira is a laudable effort that is contributing to the success of our digital economy.

According to the Buhari Media Organisation (BMO), the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), also known as e-Naira, is one of the Federal Government’s solutions to foreign exchange challenges that surprised the global economic leaders.

In a statement signed by its Chairman Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary Cassidy Madueke, BMO noted that while many countries are still considering the importance of a sovereign currency, we’ve gone ahead to pioneer it.

“What we have now is a multi-platform transactional economy; and not just that, we are now running a strong electronic platform economy, digital transactional economy and a crypto-based digital currency”.

The e-Naira which was launched in October 2021, has shown to have prospects for the Nigerian economy.

BMO, quoting the CBN governor Godwin Emefiele, noted that the digital currency “underlying blockchain could increase Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 29 billion dollars, in 10 years.

“Alongside digital innovations, digital currencies could foster economic growth through better economic activities, increase remittances, improve financial inclusion and make monetary policy more effective”.

The group added that “the e-Naira, being the first central bank digital currency in Africa, has attracted much attention and countries across Africa are coming to Nigeria to understudy its technicalities.

“Most countries in the high G7 cadre, the IMF and the World Bank, were not expecting this from us.

And from Nigeria comes the digital currency that people are now buying into: we have more banks facilitating and more traders across the world engaging in it.

“The beauty of this is that it is not just a domestic transactional platform, it also avails international transaction, one can transact from any location with a naira account at an official exchange rate.

As CBDC gets bigger, emphasis will gradually move away form hard currency (dollar) to digital currency”.

BMO highlighted that aside from making life easier for the average Nigerian, “e-Naira has made transactions simpler than what it used to be and also generated tax from merchants registered on the app.

With more registrations and participation we expect more revenue to be generated.

NCAC harnessing technology to reposition arts, culture — Runsewe

The Director-General, National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, says the agency is harnessing technology to reposition the arts and culture sub-sector in Nigeria.

Runsewe told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Sunday that technology came in handy for the agency during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

He said NCAC was one of the agencies that continued its activities to promote the country’s values due to its ability to deploy technology.

Runsewe said with the use of technology, the agency was able to carry out its activities with little or no hitch, adding that there was minimal human contact.

“During COVID-19 pandemic, the agency was one of the few sub-sectors that were busy with activities.

“We were having forum every Saturday then.

“We were the only ones that had a drive in theatre, where people could watch from their cars.

“We also had a radio network that was connected to car radios within the vicinity to making it easy for people to have clear audio, ” he said.

Runsewe said given the dynamic nature of the society, it was only proper for the agency to keep up with the times to make meaningful impact.

He said, “there is no way you can transfer information that technology will not be involved, so it is critical.

“Part of what we do is to adopt technology, particularly in our effort to reach the youth, who are technology savvy.

Lagos: Police arrest 35 robbery suspects in 3 months

The police command in Lagos State on Sunday said 35 suspected armed robbers were arrested between June and August in the state.

The command’s Spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria .

Hundeyin said 13 other suspected armed robbers were killed in different parts of the state during encounters with the police within the period.

He said while 37 robbery operations were foiled in different parts of the state, 32 different arms and 78 ammunition abandoned in vehicles by suspects were recovered during same period.

The image maker said that no kidnappings were recorded within the period, but 15 suspected cultists were arrested.

Hundeyin said six vehicles were recovered and some of the cars handed back to their owners after proof of ownership.

He noted that police officers under the command had three attacks from members of the public during same period, with the attackers since been charged to court.

“Twenty-two murder cases recorded in June, 20 in July and eight in August.

We had three cult incidents recorded in June, one in July and one in August.

“We recorded four suicide cases in June, three in July and one in August,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police,  Mr Abiodun Alabi, has advised the public to resist any demand for bribe by any police personnel, irrespective of the officers’ rank, in the discharge of their duties.

Alabi gave the advice on Saturday during his interactive session with crime reporters, warning that under no circumstance should any civilian offer money to police either to secure bail or facilitate the performance of an officer’s responsibility.

The police boss, who reiterated the age- long declaration that ‘bail is free’, reminded the public that any one who offered bribe to the police was as guilty as the police officer who received the bribe.

“Nigerians like to buy their freedom because they have committed offence.

I wonder why a man would want to waste money bribing police to secure his freedom if he has not committed crime,” he said.

The commissioner commended the commitment of officers and men of tactical units like the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Anti-Cultism and others.

Alabi, however, warned the bad elements in the various squads to desist from demanding and collecting money from members of the public who came to them with crime related problems.

According to him, information had reached him of instances where huge sums were demanded by some operatives of the squads from members of the public who came to lodge one complaint or the other.

The CP said that at such occasions, he disciplined such erring officers, adding that he would henceforth deal ruthlessly with any officer or rank and file caught indulging in such anti-service activities.

The police boss commended crime reporters in Lagos who have helped him to attain his modest achievements since he assumed office in the state seven months ago.

Earlier, the President of Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN), Mr Lekan Olabulo, commended the commissioner for carrying journalists along in policing Lagos State.

Olabulo added that Alabi’s interest in the affairs of the beat association would not be taken for granted as police and crime reporters were partners in progress.

Ohaneze Ndigbo seeks reconciliation, unity as Ossai takes over in Lagos

The Ohaneze Ndigbo has ended the leadership crisis rocking its Lagos State chapter,  with the formal  inauguration of the new leadership,  led by Mr  Sunday Ossai.

The new Chairman,  Ossai, was presented his certificate alongside other elected members by a Chieftain of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Kalu Onuma  at  a ceremony in Lagos on  Saturday.

Onuma urged the new executive to remain united and carry everybody along in its activities in the state.

He said there was need for total reconciliation and unity in the Ohaneze Ndigbo Lagos state  chapter.

Speaking, Ossia said the inauguration had settled all credibility issues of the group in Lagos state, after a protracted delay before the election.

He vowed to end the disunity in the body and give every Igbo in the state  a sense of belonging by first reconciling all aggrieved parties.

Toward their empowerment, he promised to  “register all Igbo businesses in a way that Ohaneze becomes their marker.

”According to him, every successive Ohaneze tenure comes with its distinctiveness, achievements, innovations, new partnerships and continuity toward developing, sustaining and enhancing the ideals of Ohaneze Ndigbo, with much emphasis on the welfare, peace and unity of Ndigbo.

“Today, the much awaited journey toward the total emancipation of Ndigbo in Lagos state has commenced.

I stand before everyone seated here to pledge my loyalty, commitment and selflessness as the servant-leader of the new face of Ohaneze Lagos state.

”He pledged firm support to the government and people of the state, and to  mend the disunity which he said,  the past administration of the group brought about due to concerns that were not in the overall interest of Ndigbo.

Ossai further appealed to every Igbo  to return to the fold and join hands to serve Ndigbo in Lagos state , stating: “In this administration, the common interest of Igbo shall be our collective achievement.

“We shall ensure that the interest of the Igbo shall be protected in our host-state and communities as long as our people stand firmly in honesty, love and hard work.

“To this effect, I have painstakingly, after due consultations, created as a matter of urgency, what I consider the most important committee that will reposition and redirect the focus of Ohaneze Ndigbo Lagos state in line with my ardent desire to leave a remarkable and indelible legacy for future adiministrations.

” He commended Ohaneze and all whose efforts ensured “a credible and successful election without any form of acrimony.

”Concerning the focus of the association,  Ossai clarified that “Ohaneze Ndigbo is a socio-cultural group, it is apolitical.

”Speaking, Mr Joe Igbokwe,  APC chieftain and Special Adviser to the Lagos state government on  Drainage and Water Resources,  said that all Igbo sons and daughters worldwide were automatic members of the Ohaneze.

Igbokwe, who said Ohaneze remained  an apex body for all Igbos,  explained the nature of the crisis that existed in the Lagos state chapter as “a little problem in leadership.

“Normally, we don’t get involved in the process, but Ohaneze constitution says that the  tenure is four years, after which you go.

“But somebody says he wants a second term, so, it brought about crisis and confusion.

We are here to conclude the matter.

”He said that going forward, “the next thing is reconciliation – those who said they want to continue in office, those who have been alienated – we want to bring back everybody.

    “It’s a huge population.

It’s a complex issue but we are dealing with it.

The next thing is how to bring unity,  peace, harmony, you go about your business and be law-abiding, that’s all.

”The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the event was graced by prominent Igbo sons and daughters in the state.
