Gbajabiamila tasks media practitioners to protect democracy in reportage

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila has tasked media practitioners to protect Nigeria’s democracy in their reportage.

Gbajabiamila made the call on Saturday at a workshop organised for members of the House of Representatives Press Corps in Abuja.

The workshop, titled “Deepening Legislative Knowledge through Critical Reporting’’,  was organised by the Office of the Speaker for media practitioners in Abuja.

The speaker said that democracy was a fragile construct, saying that it depended on the support of the electorate and required active participation by an informed citizenry.

Gbajabiamila said that democracy demanded competence, capacity, and integrity from those overseeing the affairs of the state, saying that it would not survive long unless both the leaders and the citizens operated within the rule of law.

According to the lawmaker, democracy also requires careful tending and robust defence as a matter of course.

“The role of the press in a democracy is multi-faceted.

You inform the public and you educate them about the law and government, politics and governance.

“You record history as it happens and preserve the national memory as a guide and warning for the future.

“And you hold power to account, ensuring that those who are chosen to serve the public interest keep faith with the citizens who depend on them.

“Democracy will not long survive without a vibrant, independent, innovative and patriotic press,’’ he said.

Gbajabiamila said that while the landscape within which the press operated had changed in dramatic ways, the duties of the press and the public expectation of them remained the same.

He said it was expect of journalists and media organisations to maintain a high level of professional conduct.

The lawmaker said citizens demanded accurate reporting and detailed analysis of public policy and expected the media to continue to defend their rights, hold the powerful to account and promote the public good through journalism practice.

Also, The spokesman for the House of Representatives, Rep. Benjamin Kalu (APC-Abia) tasked the media on professionalism as the country looked forward to the general elections in 2023. According to the lawmaker, the press is at the centre of a successful governance, overseeing the synergy of governance and communication.

Kalu said that the press was often referred to as the fourth estate of the realm because it was a vital component of democracy.

He said the media had explicit capacity of advocacy and the implicit capacity to frame political issues, not just for social discourse but also, for the information and consideration of the legislature and other policymakers.

“As we enter the election season, the press should centre its reportage on issues and not persons.

The press should avoid being misused as tools for character assassination.

“The press in this period should only project things that advance the trust in our democracy.

“The press should showcase only campaigns that tell the electorate about the candidates, their antecedents and their objectives to enable electorate to get educated on why they should vote for any candidate,’’ he said.

In his remarks, the Clerk to the House of Representatives, Dr Yahaya Danzaria, said that it was true that the media owed the people obligation to report development in the polity.

He said it was important that such reports were not borne out of desperation for sensation that destroyed the democracy intended to be built and protected.

“The media is the eye and voice of the people in a democracy.

The legislature is often regarded as Freedom Square because it is the only institution in a democracy that the people have rights at any time to interact directly with their representatives.

“The media is central to the success of any democracy and indeed any legislature, because the media represents the people when it provides them with information and report of activities in governance and representation.

“Without the media, there cannot be a functional democracy or political participation in any democratic society.

Danzaria said there was need to ensure a more organised, effective and unified communication channel for the National Assembly to curtail erroneous or sometimes completely false news.

Bamigboye, who doubles as the interim National Coordinator of AFAN, said the association was borne out of the need to set a standard for football administration in Nigeria.

“AFAN is an independent body that will be made up of football administrators at all levels.

“There is the need to set a standard for football administration in Nigeria and evolve a template for leadership recruitment into the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and States’ Football Associations.

“I have consulted with a number of football administrators and still reaching out to others in my capacity as interim national coordinator of the association, ” he said.

He expressed optimism that the formation of the association would serve as antidote to the rather poor football administration in the country, adding that it would unveil more of its plans in due course.

How Queen Elizabeth II will be remembered — NIDOE

The Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation-Europe (NIDOE), Dr Bashir Obasekola, says the Late Queen Elizabeth II will be remembered as a kind, great leader and admired monarch.

Queen Elizabeth II, the longest reigning British monarch, died on Thursday at Balmoral Castle, Aberdeenshire, Scotland at the age of 96 years.

Obasekola told the  News Agency of Nigeria in a telephone interview on Saturday that she was a symbol of continuity in a world of constant change.

He said that the queen ascended the throne when the movement for independence among the British colonies was severe.

The NIDOE chairman said that, as a young queen, she courageously carried on and didn’t attempt to scuttle the independence of the colonies, including Nigeria.

“On behalf of NIDOE, I join the world to express heartfelt condolences to the royal family, the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

“I also join in welcoming King Charles III to the throne.

May his reign be good and successful.

    “God save the king!

    ”,” he said.

According to Obasekola, Nigerian descents constitute a significant number of immigrants in the UK, and the headquarters of NIDO-Europe is registered in London.

He said the queen was seen as the vessel of transition and de-colonialism of many countries, noting that under her watch, immigrants occupied high political and economic positions in the UK.

“Before the queen passed, she had also just appointed the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Liz Truss.

    This is as well symbolic.

” Recall that 47-year-old Truss became British Prime Minister on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Truss described late Queen Elizabeth II as the spirit of Great Britain, adding that she was loved and admired by the people of the United Kingdom and around the world.

International relations expert, Prof. Ayo Olukotun, said that the late queen made a mark in the manner in which she managed diplomatic relations around the world.

    .

Olukotun, of the Political Science Department, Olabisi Onabanjo University, said the late monarch was a picture of goodwill.

This, he said, was not only in the United Kingdom, but globally and particularly in Britain where she was Head of State.

“The British monarchy is a delicate institution that exercises soft power and despite this, its importance to global affairs cannot be overemphasized,” Olukotun said.
