Nigerians raise concerns over none usage of indigenous languages

Some Nigerians have expressed dissatisfaction about the dearth in the use of Nigerian indigenous languages, owing to the fact that some children hardly communicate in their mother tongue.A cross section of Nigerians expressed this view in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, saying that language is an important component of national identity and values.Mrs Irene Maida, a mother of three, said that one of the reasons parents do not speak their indigenous languages to their children was due to inter-ethnic marriages.“I got married to a man from Nasarawa State, we are both from different places so I only speak my native language to my siblings but not to my children.“My husband doesn’t even understand his own language, so we adopted speaking the Hausa language, since we are in the North.“At least let our children understand and speak one Nigerian language other than the English language,” Maida explained. She, however, regretted the fact that her children do not understand her language.“I feel bad that my children can’t speak my own language but at the same time I’m okay that they can speak Hausa language.“They are even eager to learn the language but it doesn’t just flow because we didn’t start early since my husband doesn’t understand my language.Similarly, Mr Albert Otu, a civil servant,  said that he found it difficult to communicate with the family in his  language due to language barrier between him and the wife.“My wife is from the same local government area with me but we don’t understand each other’s  language, as a result we always communicate in English language.“Since we don’t understand each other’s native language, it makes it difficult for us to teach our children our language,” Otu said.Mrs Zainab Garba-Adamu, a mother of five, said that some parents see the indigenous languages as outdated, hence would not want their children to be identified with it.“Some parents feel they are now modernised, as a result see the indigenous languages as archaic.“The indigenous languages are going into extinction because parents speak the English language to their children, instead of teaching them their mother tongue,” she said.On why indigenous languages are important, Mr Haruna Idachaba, a father of three, said that one’s native language identifies him or her.Idachaba urged parents to teach their children their languages, so that when they grow, they would grow to cherish and protect the language.“I am proud of my language and I want my children to be identified with it.“I communicate with my children in my language because I want them to understand it,’’ he said.In her part, Mrs Cecilia Odoh,  an educationist, said that children should be taught in their indigenous languages, saying it has a way of reviving and protecting the cultural values of the society.“Many elderly people in the villages do not understand nor speak the English language; hence the need for children to be taught in their indigenous languages for proper integration into the society.Mrs Liza Orakwe, another educator, said that not speaking the indigenous language to the children would endanger the language naturally.Orakwe said that children who cannot  speak nor understand their indigenous language would look out of place among their counterparts in the village, when they visit.“We should not allow our indigenous  languages to die; it links us to our roots,” she said.NewsSourceCredit: NAN

2023: Omo-Agege, Keyamo call for unity in Delta APC

Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege on Sunday called for unity among members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta to kick out the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration in the state in 2023. The call was made in a statement in Abuja, by Mr Ima Niboro, Director, Communications and Media Strategy, Delta APC Gubernatorial Campaign Organisation.

According to the statement, Omo-Agege spoke at a meeting of Delta Central APC Leaders and Stakeholders in Effurun, Delta.

Omo-Agege said he was motivated by a desire to arrest receding hope among Deltans and build a state where the people’s future would be brighter than their past.

“We need to be united to be able to confront the PDP.

These are people who keep repeating the same thing and expect a different outcome.

“We are going to change the narrative in Delta.

We are going to stand by Bola Tinubu for President.

Selling him won’t be a difficult task.

We saw what he did in Lagos,” he said.

Also, convener of the meeting and Spokesperson, APC Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo SAN, accused the PDP government of running “a clueless and shortsighted administration”.

President Muhammadu Buhari in the course of the week reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to assist victims of floods across the country.

According to the Nigerian leader, he receives regular updates on flooding, which has affected more than 500,000 Nigerians since January.

A statement issued by his media aide, Malam Garba Shehu on Tuesday in Abuja, said the president extended condolences to those affected by the floods.

He assured that the Federal Government would continue to provide the needed emergency assistance to individuals and communities impacted by the disaster.

He also invited public-spirited individuals and organisations to support hundreds of thousands of people in need of urgent help in the affected communities.

The president had also hosted members of Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) led by its Chairman, Gov. Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi, on Tuesday in Abuja.

At the meeting, the president assured Nigerians that the governing party, APC, would bequeath strong political institutions that reflected their choices, through non-interference in elections.

The president cited outcomes of polls in Ekiti, Anambra and Osun States as indicators of his administration’s non-interference in political processes in the country.

According to him, non-interference in elections gives credence to the political processes, ensures participation and inclusiveness, and shows that the governing party respects the electorate.

He said APC, under his leadership, would continue to respect Nigerians by ensuring that their votes count and the people’s voices mattered in choosing political leaders at different levels.

The president also mourned the demise of the last leader of the former Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, who died on Aug. 30 at the age of 91, describing him as “a courageous reformer.

”According to the Nigerian leader, Gorbachev will be remembered for years to come ”because of his immeasurable contributions to world peace and openness in his own once rigidly closed society.

”Also on Aug. 31, the Presidency challenged Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue to name those military personnel who told him that President Buhari had ordered security forces not to move against criminal herdsmen.

Malam Garba Shehu, the President’s media aide, who challenged the governor in a statement, described the claim as ridiculous and patently untrue.

He , however, asked Ortom to name the military personnel who told him this story or forever shut up.

President Buhari ended the week congratulating some prominent citizens happy birthdays.

The affected personalities included Sen. Kashim Shettima, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

Iwuanyanwu, a businessman, publisher and sports enthusiast celebrated his 80th birthday, on Sunday.

On Shettima, Buhari  said ”the former governor of Borno is above any other politics”.

He joined leaders and members of the APC to celebrate Shettima on his 56th.

The president saluted him for his visionary and participatory style of leadership.

He also commended Shettima for his courage, foresight, sagacity and intellectualism.

Buhari also commended the SGF, who  clocks 66 years on Sunday, Sept. 4, for his dedication to nation building since his youthful days in the 1980s.

The president noted the commitment of the SGF in ensuring fluidity of ideas, teamwork and harmony, and efficient transitions of policies into gains for Nigerians.

Climate deal: Nigeria to reap billions of dollars in debt relief — Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says the Federal Government will be reaping billions of dollars in debt relief from some creditors if the Debt-for-Climate (DFC) swap deal is accepted.

Osinbajo’s spokesman, Laolu Akande, in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, said the swap deal was  proposed recently  in the U.

    S. by the vice president.

The idea, described as fresh thinking in Washington D.

C by senior American government officials, is already receiving positive reviews even as Osinbajo explained the potential for significant debt cancellation for African countries.

In his meetings with the top officials of the US Government right after his speech at the Centre for Global Development (CGD), Osinbajo pushed the DFC idea.

“The proposed DFC  swaps would be a very useful intervention and helpful as it will reduce debt burdens,” while advancing the Climate Change objectives of the international community.

”He also described the idea as a climate change related financing instrument, deserving of global consideration as it is a win-win proposal.

Osinbajo also pushed the idea of opening up the Carbon Market in Africa so that the climate change actions of African countries could be adequately verified by the international community through the assessments of the appropriate verification institutions.

“We are hoping to get support and international buy-ins for these ideas,” specifically the DFC and the participation of African countries in the international carbon market.

He reiterated that the DFC will help solve many of the debt burden challenges in Nigeria and other countries.

Responding to the DFC proposal,  Samantha Power, the Administrator of USAID,  told the vice president that the idea was “fresh thinking that is very exciting”.

    He added  that the U.

    S. was open to such new thinking even though it would require the full policy review of the American Government.

Experts say that under the DFC, sovereign debtors and international creditors will forgive all or a portion of external debt.

The debts  often run into billions in a country like Nigeria, in exchange for a commitment by the country to invest in domestic currency, in specific climate or energy transition projects during a commonly agreed period.

The expectation is that DFC Debt will reduce the level of indebtedness and free up fiscal resources to be invested in clean energy projects in Nigeria and other countries signed up for the programme, once accepted by creditor-nations.

Osinbajo had explained that the swap deal was a type of debt swap where bilateral or multilateral debt was forgiven by creditors in exchange for a commitment by the debtor to use the outstanding debt service payments for national climate action programs.

“Typically, the creditor country or institution agrees to forgive part of a debt.

“If the debtor country would pay the avoided debt service in a local currency into an escrow or any other transparent fund, and the funds must then be used for agreed climate projects in the debtor country,” he said.

    While in Washington D.

C., the vice president  met with his American counterpart,  Kamala Harris at the White House and the U.

    S. Secretary of the Treasury, Janet Yellen .

He also held an interactive session with a group of Nigerian staff members of the World Bank and the IMF.

LASG arrests 28 suspected land grabbers in six months

The Lagos State Taskforce on Environment and Other Offences said no fewer than 28 suspected land grabbers were arrested in the last six months.

The taskforce spokesperson, Mr Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, who confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Lagos, said that the arrest was in collaboration with the Lagos State Land Grabbing Agency.

Abdulraheem said that the taskforce usually gave cover for the land grabbing agency anytime they carried out operations, adding that the arrests were carried out at different parts of the state.

Similarly, the spokesperson in a statement, said five suspected land grabbers, popularly known as “Omo-Onile” who had been terrorising Abijo, Ibeju-Lekki area of the state, were arrested on Saturday.

He said that the suspects had formed a land grabbing syndicate known for allegedly terrorising legitimate property owners, causing mayhem and disrupting development activities and construction in Ibeju-Lekki area.

He said  the state government had appealed to the suspects to desist from the illegal acts but they continued to cause chaos within the area.

”This forced the agencies to carry out the raid.

“Residents and victims of these land have laid series of complaints to the taskforce, which made us carry out our own investigation, leading to warnings being issued to them.

“It is quite unfortunate that they feel untouchable and daring but with this actions, they will learn to obey the laws.

There is no room for land grabbers in Lagos,” he said.

Abdulraheem, however, said that the officers encountered some resistance during the operation, where some of the land grabbers shot sporadically to dissuade them from carrying out their duties.

    ”But we over powered them.

It is sad that even women are among the individuals arrested and we found guns, charms and other harmful weapons which they use to intimidate their victims.

“They will be made to face the full wrath of the law and we will ensure that anyone found engaging in such a nefarious practice anywhere in the state will be arrested and prosecuted,” he said.

Abdulraheem further said that the taskforce Chairman, CSP Shola Jejeloye, urged residents not to pay land grabbers any money for properties which were legitimately purchased.

The taskforce chairman, therefore, urged the people to report incidents of land grabbing to the taskforce.
