Former president Jonathan, others laud Iwuanyanwu at 80

Eminent Nigerians including former President Goodluck Jonathan and Gov. Hope Uzodimma of Imo, on  Saturday poured encomiums  on  elder statesman, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu as he clocked 80.This followed a maiden lecture series organised in honour of Iwuanyanwu by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Imo Council in Owerri.

In his remarks, Jonathan, who chaired the occasion, expressed delight over Iwuanyanwu’s sustained relevance and positive impact on Nigerians in the past eight decades.

Speaking on the theme: “Igbo Quest For Nigeria’s Unity,” Jonathan described Iwuanyanwu as a father, role model and man of many parts whose enviable track records of excellence, courage and determination had  emboldened the continued quest for a united Nigeria.

He said Iwuanyanwu had continued to  place Nigeria’s unity above personal gains.

He urged politicians aspiring to elective positions to take deliberate steps to whittle down ethnic differences and focus on Nigeria’s unity.

“I have no doubt that Igbos hold an important place in Nigeria’s unity as they have contributed in no small measures to Nigeria’s success in trade, industry, academics, and sundry areas of endeavour.

“Looking at our political history, the quest for Nigeria’s unity can be achieved and this requires that all stakeholders work in synergy and imbibe the tenets of nationhood above ethnic and religious inclinations, in imitation of Iwuanyanwu.

“Nigeria as a country should know that we need to review certain things.

“We cannot become slaves to our challenges; if we work together, we can build a nation where everyone will have a  sense of belonging,” he said.

Speaking, Uzodimma described Iwuanyanwu as a detribalised strong, lucid and articulate national figure,  who even at 80, had continued to demand a united, peaceful Nigeria.

He further described the Igbo as a peace loving people whose commitment to nationhood was without a doubt, hence their ability to thrive in all parts of the country where they resided.

He advised Nigerians to embrace peace and eschew all activities capable of jeopardizing the country’s unity.

“Iwuanyanwu has stayed strong, lucid and articulate at 80 because most of his life has been dedicated to service of God and humanity, a reflection of the Igbo quest for Nigeria’s unity, which we, inspite of obvious misrepresentations, continue to uphold.

“Ndigbo believe in live and let live, there is no better way to assert our unity.

We must therefore,  not resort to war in a bid to fight marginalisation.

We must eschew violence, embrace peace and unity.

“We may have our flaws as a race but a man cannot live in a land he loathes and remain progressive in his business and other endeavours.

We love Nigeria dearly and this, without a doubt,” he said.

The Guest Lecturer and former President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Nnia Nwodo, described the celebrant as a quintessential model for today’s youths.

He called for devolution of power for a better Nigeria, adding that a restructured Nigeria would give each geo-political zone the sovereignty over their production and a sense of belonging.

“No attempt should be made to force Igbos out of political relevance, we are as qualified as other Nigerians and  Nigeria needs all of us now.

“We must stop brooding over what has happened to us in the past, we can still make a country.

“Our industry and acceptability are evidence of our  preparedness to serve and our quest for Nigeria’s unity is unwavering,” he said.

Responding,  Iwuanyanwu commended the dignitaries and the organisers for honoring him.

He, however,  called for a restructured Nigeria to correct all  perceived injustices such as creation of more council areas and state police.

In his remarks, Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Mr Chris Njoku, thanked Iwuanyanwu for coming to the aid of journalists in the state irrespective of the ” tasking nature of the profession”.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the event was attended by representatives of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Arewa Consultative Forum, Middle Belt Forum, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Afenifere and the Northern Elders Forum.

Also present were former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara ; former Military Governor of Imo, Ike Nwachukwu, heads of security agencies in the state.

Ondo Summer Tennis Clinic trains over 1,000 children — Gov’s wife

The Wife of Ondo State Governor, Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, says the fifth edition of the Summer Tennis Clinic has trained more than 1000 children on how to play the Tennis.

Akeredolu said this on Saturday at Akure Recreation Club at the opening ceremony of the Summer Tennis Clinic for the Central Senatorial District.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that about 400 children between the ages of four and 13 from the district are currently taking part in the 2022 Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu Summer Tennis Clinic.

The number added up to the 620 children who had been trained at the Southern and Northern senatorial districts of the state.

Akeredolu said the event had produced several children with interest in the game of Tennis and over 150 involved and enlisted as members of the Arabirin Junior Tennis Club. She said that the summer clinic produced players who had represented the state at national and regional championships and intended to produce more.

Akeredolu said that this year’s edition was extended to other towns in two senatorial districts of Ondo state in Owo and Okitipupa, to afford children in the nooks and crannies to also benefit from the initiative.

“After holding the first to the Fourth editions in Akure, we deemed it fit to decentralise the programme for the benefit of children in the hinterlands.

“We took this decision so that geography or any other socio-economic factor would no longer be an excuse for repeatedly denying children within the remote areas the privileges their counterparts in the state capital enjoy,” she said.

“Already, about 25 of these children have since excelled as professionals and proud representatives of Ondo State at regional, national and international levels.

“Since inception, they had participated in at least 15 tournaments at various competitions, including Chevron Open Champions, South-West U-16 tournament, Kayode Fayemi U-17, Kaduna Clay Cut Junior Championship,” she said.

Mr Dele Ologun, Chairman of the occasion and the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development in Ondo State, said he was elated over the efforts of the governor’s wife.

Ologun said the clinic would engage the mental ability of the children and even produce great stars such as Venus Williams, Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic.

He thanked the state governor for his love of sports development, charging parents to expose their kids to sports at a tender age.

“Her heart of love for the young ones in Ondo State has birthed many Programme s which are designed to have both short and long term positive effects on the children, ” he said.

On his part, the Chairman of Akure Recreation Club and former Chief of Staff in Ondo State Mr Kola Ademujimi, said the club was delighted with the yearly event.

She said Mrs Akeredolu had added glamour to the club by constructing a court and attracting more women to the club.

Ademujimi said the Akure Recreation Club was the oldest tennis court in the southwestern part of the country, having been founded by the British settlers in 1927. She said the club would always be available for interested players and the summer tennis clinic.

Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio First Lady Fatima Bio Register to vote in the 2023 election and say democracy is the alternative to violence

His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio and First Lady Fatima Bio have completed their voter registrations, which began today September 3 and will last until October 4, 2022, assuring Sierra Leoneans that democracy is the alternative to democracy.

    violence.

At the military hockey field, one of the centers in Wilberforce, the president and his wife also urged citizens of voting age to turn out in numbers and register with the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone, ECSL, so that they would be qualified.

to vote in the national presidential, parliamentary and local council elections of 2023.

“This is not the first time that the Electoral Commission has embarked on the electoral process in the country, they have been doing it every five years.

So, as a government and as a nation, it is our expectation and conviction that they have been working very hard to be perfect in handling such tasks.” With the support of the National Vital Records Authority, NCRA, the job is much easier now than in the past, because once my name was entered into their system, all the other details that were required to be asked just appeared in their system.

They signed me up very quickly.

So, I'm sure, for the ECSL , this exercise will be a very quick and short process," the president said.

President Julius Maada Bio further noted that because registration was part of the elections, he would invite anyone of voting age to complete the registration process in order to vote.

He added that this would be the only way they could express their opinions instead of using violence.

"Go and register so that on that day you have the power in your hand to change or support the government in power," he said, calling on supporters of political parties to be peaceful, law-abiding and to refrain from all forms of violence.

"My messages have been the same before 2018 as a presidential hopeful and now as the president of the country, they remain the same.

    We don't need to fight.

    That's why we have democracy.

Once you have your ballot, you can be in a position to say whatever you mean by maintaining, supporting, or changing that government.

"So no one is expected to be violent.

Democracy is an alternative to violent government change.

I call on all citizens of voting age to register to vote."

that they can maintain this government because of the many good things that we have been doing.

we are still counting", he concluded.
